    I think it's funny that reptile humidifiers are better used for growing mushrooms than with reptile's.
    Side note just in case anyone asks why: the foggers/humidifiers put too much of a fine moisture content in the air and can cause respiratory infections in reptiles. RI's are hard and can be very costly to deal with so it's better to avoid these types of systems. Good caging with more up to date quality heating elements is the best way to keeping reptiles. This plus just misting every so often with a hair spray bottle from the dollar store is adequate enough.
    Also I've learned other tricks from the reptile trade that came in handy for growing mushrooms.
    Instead of using a drill bit ava risking cracking any plastic tubs to make holes. You can use a soldering iron to make any holes and they will be nice rounded smooth holes. Not sharp and needing any sanding after drilling.
    If you mist your tubs with a spray bottle like on the sides for humidity for your mushrooms. Take some thicker copper wiring, stripped of course, cut a couple pieces and put into the bottle. Copper of high copper content had antimicrobial properties. You can even use pennies made before 1983. I used to put one or two pennies in my snakes bowls just in case for some reason they wouldn't get changed out for a little while longer than once a day.
    No idea why but I find this fascinating and neat. I've been told also that early ppls kept water on copper bowls and threw copper coins into wells. Which is where throwing coins into a fountain and making a wish supposedly comes from.

    Hi Jackalope Farm, what an awesome build and video. I originally was going to go with a mono tub but after seeing this, I do believe you changed my mind, I really like how neat it looks and not as big as a mono tub. Thanks for the tutorial. Shroom on✌️

    All day looking and reading about systems to do exactly what you've done. I was on Amazon looking for a unit with a hose like you have, but nothing could be found. I'm checking out the reptile humidifiers. I have 54-quart monotubs looking to do some humidity treatments rather than a continuous misting. Good Ideas, with the best-looking chamber. Thank You Jackalope people! I subscribed, hopefully, you let us see that chamber again with your final tune-up. ☺👍👍

    Good idea on your setup. I had some yellow oyster Culture syringe I inoculated into 90 second microwave brown rice bags. I recommend the 90 second rice. Cheap, Sterile and ready to use. Just keep everything including the bags wiped down with ISO before use. You can keep a constant supply of your mycelium. I put the, fully colonized after 1 week rice bag into a plastic tub. Then cut a cross in the bag for fruiting and oxygen exposure. Put the lid on the tub with some wet coir fibre on the bottom of the tub for humidity. I have a small usb strip light on a timer for 8 hrs a day. I just lift the lid and fan the tub twice per day. I have purchased a fan and want to automate a setup soon. I recommend a cheap digital timer to just blow fresh air for 2 minutes twice per day to prevent contamination issues. Its getting cold in Australia now, so I got a couple of cheap usb reptile heat mats to keep 25 degrees c. Let us know how the humidifier works on colonization and fruiting. Great hobby and healthy too.

  • @scri33le
    @scri33le ปีที่แล้ว

    Did it work well?
    I feel like I tried this and failed. The inkbird humidity controller really helped but without it was too much pooled water and the humidifier would run dry quickly. Then, the fan would dry out the cake.
    Those little pond foggers stink because they "spit" water everywhere.
    I like the idea of the "reptile" humidifier because making my own tubes wasn't easy or effective.

    Wouldn't the air flow that's coming in with the humidifier be enough air? Why do we need the air that's coming in with the water to be moved around more?
    PS I really like your ideas and I'm going to do something similar. I just feel like why do we need two times the air? Thank you for letting me know what you think about that

    • @thejackalopefarm6201
      @thejackalopefarm6201  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Fresh air is really key to the mushrooms growth. Honestly I was concerned it wouldnt be enough air flow with the little fan. While plants consume carbon dioxide and expel oxygen, mushrooms consume oxygen and expel carbon dioxide. If they do not get enough O2, they get "leggy" as they are reaching out trying to get more air. If you have enough ventilation you can probably get away with just running the humidifier. This chamber is pretty closed up and I would not run it without the fan. When I grow outdoors I just run the humidifier, but the tent I keep them is is totally open at the bottom.

    Sweet setup! How do you control contaminants from getting in with an open air fan? Wouldn’t there still be a chance of trich getting in there from the open fan? Wondering if you can filter it.

    • @thejackalopefarm6201
      @thejackalopefarm6201  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So I do have a small piece of filter material that is over the backside of the fan. I was more concerned about dog hair getting in there lol. BUT no I'm not worried so much about contamination at the fruiting stage. At least not on such a small controlled scale. Contamination during inoculation is definitely a concern though.

      This is hardly high tech. There are definitely high tech fruiting chambers on the market. Pretty certain I recall mentioning that you could do this cheaper. The primary reason I built this was so I could leave it in my dining room and not have the eyesore of a monotub. To each their own my friend. If I posted a monotub video someone would likely be in here explaining how unnecessary it is to have a monotub when all you really need is a spore block in a grow bag and a spray bottle.
