  • Having way too much fun with these Mods I'm doing to the blade. Even doing it to the 120th-anniversary version. I bought a batch and found one in there that I just had to keep for myself. And, I'm keeping one of my modded ones as well. I find the smaller hole in the blade to be aesthetically pleasing and functional and not really so large that you would be concerned about the strength of the blade. I have already had requests from guys wanting me to do the mod to their knife. I won't do that because if I screw up, I've ruined your personal property. I'll only do it to new knives I buy. Maybe down the road, I'll think about selling some of them. In the meantime, I just having fun with it.
    So join me won't you and see why these knives are fun to have.

    Not sure what you are going to think or say but here is my story. In 1971 I was travelling around the world backpacking it & staying in youth hostels, with my girlfriend who later became my wife. I believe we were in Greece, when I met a young American [I am Canadian} who had the most beautiful & spectacular folding knife I had EVER seen at that time. I was all over him to find out where it was made & how I could get one. He told me that it was a "BUCK 110 folding hunter" & gave me the address in El Cahon, California so I could buy one, because at that time they were not for sale in Canada. The second I returned to Canada, I ordered one. $20 US at the time, But here's the rub. He & his friends modified the knife to be quickly opened one handed. What they did & so did I as I REALLY liked the mod was to shave down the wooden scale so that you could easilly flick open the blade. At this time the knives had very square edge handles, so we just carved the left side down by the thumb nick from the square edge of the scale down to the blade on basically a 45 degree angle making it easy to access the blade & open it one handed. I loved the mod. Still have the knife, still LOVE the mod . As far as I am concerned We only made the knives BETTER, more convenient to use. I am not sorry for what I did to the knife, better than those cheesy thumb studs. Well think what you will . That's the way it is,was, & ever will be!

      That’s a great mod. Thank you for your story about it. I appreciate it. It sounds a lot like the thumb ramp that I incorporate into the handle of the knives that I put the hole in the blade. It gives your thumb something to grab a hold of to help you flick open the knife. Though the back spring is so tight you really can’t flick. I’d love to see a picture of your knife.

    I have bought only two Buck 110s in blister packs. They have beautiful matching scales. The machining and centering is excellent. I bought my first Buck 110 in 1975 and still have it. It is also excellent

      Well, I will say that you are just a very lucky guy. That is fantastic. I have not been so lucky...and I am a little over the top fussy about the lockup of my knives. So, that, combined with the glaring issue of slanted spines (that I of course can fix) I find that the truly anal knife owner, will still not want to chance buying one in a blister pack or sight unseen.
      Thank you for your comment and keep on enjoying that '75.

    I am both a communist and a fan of the beloved Buck 110. I can not speak for my comrades who do not appreciate the glory that is the all american beauty Buck 110 knife. I was lucky enough to find one from the year I was born (88) and Ill take this thing to my grave. I never leave the house without it and it has served me through good times and bad. I really enjoy these videos shining a light on the best folding knife ever made by american hands. I love the knife so much that when I finally had the money I had a custom 110 made with cherry handles and my name engraved onto the bolsters. These two knives are easily among my most treasured possessions.

    The first time I ever saw a Buck 110 was in 1972 in Greece on the island of Crete. I met a young man from California & he had a Buck 110, with mods. He said they all shaved down the square edge of the handle on the lower right hand side, which made the knife easilly openable with one hand. When I came back to Canada & ordered my Buck 110 from El Cahon california, I immedietly shaved down that side of the handle & it has been that way ever since . No need for a thumb stud or anything else. you get enough purchase on the blade with the scale shaved down to open it one handed NO problem. Still have it, still love it still happy with the mod I made way back when!

    Hey , I am 72 this year , 2023 & I remember the first release of the 110 , back in the day !!! I thought this then & I still think this now , even after owning a few down through the decades !!! I don't mind the thick blade . BUT , the thick , heavy & clunky handles have always been a negative to me & that is why I sold off everyone I ever bought !!! MotherBuck made slimmer , smaller versions of the 110 , but they never revisited the 110 with this concept , & keep the ebony handles !!! Gerber to their credit , was always slim line & I liked them more for that !!! If folks remember , RIGID of Santee , Ca. , made a 110 knock off with finger groves handle that sold like crazy , & it to was a fat & clunky handle !!!

    I'm thinking about ordering a few Buck knives from a rewards program at my work but I am having a hard time finding info about them.
    One is a "Buck Ranger" and the description says: A Hunting knife that features a handle of natural wood grain w/ solid brass bolsters & liner forged in 1 pc. Positive lock-open action. Includes black leather sheath. Closed length 4-1/4". Has 3" clip blade. A smaller version of the Folding Hunter. Lifetime warranty. USA made
    The other says "Buck Folding Hunter" and the description is:Introduced decades ago, this knife is still as popular and efficient as they day it was born. It is an American icon in hunting. It's 3-3/4" clip blade is made of 420HC steel. The knife measures 4-7/8" closed and weighs 7.2 oz. The handle is made of Macassar Ebony Dymondwood and the sheath of genuine leather. Lifetime warranty. USA made
    It seems like the Folding Hunter is around $65 at Bass Pro but I can't find the first one. Are these the 110 and 112? I am pretty sure I am going to order them either way but just wondering about looking into what I am really gonna order. Either way they are FREE Buck knives!! I say FREE but I have worked here for almost 6 years accident free

    • @knifetimestory
      @knifetimestory  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Okay, first of all, that is awesome that your employer has a rewards program and offers stuff like that. COOL.
      Sounds like the Buck 112 and 110 to me. I've had a 112 and just never bonded with it, however, I have six 110s that I currently use in rotation. Something about the overall aesthetic and balance of the 110 that I think makes it way more popular and useful. If your knife laws are really stringent, then maybe the 112. But, with that said, even my ridiculous NY knife laws let me carry the 110 because it is not concealed, but in the sheath on my belt. So, I live under the assumption that anywhere I go, the sight of a 110 in a sheath should not draw alarm or concern.
      Let me know what you decide on!!

    • @BeaverDunker
      @BeaverDunker 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I ordered the 110 and patiently waited. Then just today it showed up!!! My first impressions were "wow this is NOT what I ordered!!".... They sent me a Special Hunter 119 which looking into it they are $10 more BUT I don't really use Fixed blades. I sent off an email informing them of what happened and asking if I can still get my 110, but I do have enough rewards points to just order another 110 and keep the 119 if they want me to send it back to receive the one I ordered.

    Didn’t Chuck Buck go to a different 400 series for the ease of hot stamping the blade stock ? I’m thinking 420.

    • @knifetimestory
      @knifetimestory  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure of the reasoning behind the change from 425 to 420hc. Most likely, just like in most industries, it was less expensive and maybe easier to machine and make blades from. Who knows. Good question though.

    Hi!
    Your video is very informative and makes me wanna own a Buck 110. I heard they have version with Dymondwood and Crelicam Ebony wood. May you give me your advice on which 'wood' is better based on your long term experience? Thank you!

    • @knifetimestory
      @knifetimestory  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi,
      Thanks for watching and your question. I think in this video, I mentioned the Dymondwood version, might have been a different video. Mine is the one with the finger grooves. They don't make that version anymore. All Ebony. I prefer the feel of the ebony. Much warmer feeling. Other than one, out of about 15 of mine, had an issue with the ebony swelling. I fixed that problem. It really is a stable wood. The Dymondwood just feels like plastic to me. Sure, it never shrinks or swells, but it never takes on a nice patina or personality of its own through years of use.

    Another great video, Mr.Tom. Just curious how you're cutting slots...drill press with milling bits, actual mill work, or several drilled holes and file work? I'd love to have one of the drop point 110s with your thumb slot. Thank so much. Happy Easter!!

      Overtime I have come up with it but I would like to consider a proprietary method. But it is not drillbits. That much I will give you. And not a plasma cutter.

    Is finger grove comfortable to hold Or the classic is more comfortable

    • @knifetimestory
      @knifetimestory  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi.
      Good question. Actually, I find the class/regular model more comfortable to hole. The finger grooves make the center of the handle a little too small for me. I think they look cool, but the classic is the way to go for practical everyday use.

      @@knifetimestory thanks for your response! I have been wanting a buck for many years and I think I’m going to pull the trigger before the price goes up some more! (Will take your advice to get the classic design). Two last questions, is having a buck 112 and buck 110 an over kill? , the reason I am asking is because I like the prestige and history of the buck 110/112 and believe will carry the buck 112 more often!! And do you have a video on sharpening knives cause I just bought the work shop professional precision and you seem to be very good in explaining. Of course I have not look all of your videos but if you say you do I will take the time to look for it. Thank you again for taking the time to respond 👍🏼

      @willhaynie9684
      Ha Ha. You are asking the wrong guy about overkill!! Well, in all seriousness, I had a 112 for maybe a month and just never bonded with it. But that does not imply that having both would be overkill. If you feel that you would want to carry a slightly smaller knife at some point, then the 112 is a nice option. But, I wear my 110 on my belt, which makes it not concealed and not an issue, even in NY. So...if I'm going to carry something that heavy, it may as well be the 110. I like the extra blade length for cutting stuff in the woods, opening mail, and just about every task in the kitchen.
      Hope that helps and does not muddy the waters for you even more!!

    • @willhaynie9684

      Precisely! That is why I do not buy them site unseen. I have actually seen them where it look like maybe they spent 10 minutes trying to sharpen a knife and by then there’s 20 years of use gone. Whoever they train to do that, should be the one who does it all the time. A couple passes on the grinder… Done.

      Well… I believe I say in the video that I would never do that. You might get one that looks good if the seller is showing pictures of the exact knife you would receive, but you still don’t know if the lock up is good. Your best bet is to seek out a brick and mortar store that sells them.

    Go Buck yourself. But first, check for a loose blade and other defects mentioned in the video. Then, overlook the fact that this Legacy US knife comes with a sheath made in Mexico. Then, go directly to the Buck website rather than dealing with a distributor and notice how many models are not even available. What's with that? Is the Buck factory just a hobby? The website's kind of half-ass too. You can put a knife in your cart thinking you got lucky and found one in stock. Then, when it's time to check out, it's not available. Harley Davidson sold out their quality to AMF in the seventies. Enough employees who loved Harley's history bought it back and went back to quality. Maybe Buck will have a revelation and clean up their act. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think people are looking for the best knife and are willing to pay for it. It means very little to me how long they've been around.

      This is a great comment. I look forward to visiting them some day and I'll be sure to ask about the website issues you have encountered. Along with the quality hit or miss issue as well as the burning question I have as to why the blade pivot on a big knife like the 110 is brass? Even Schrade (God rest their soul) used steel.
