  • Transcutaneous Bilirubinometers and Audio-Visual Teaching Aid Dedicated to Department of Pediatrics at GMC Anantnag
    Anantnag, 20/07/2024
In a significant development, the Department of Pediatrics at GMC Anantnag has been equipped with state-of-the-art transcutaneous bilirubinometers and an advanced audio-visual system. The Principal of GMC, Prof. (Dr) Rukhsana Najeeb, dedicated these new tools to the department during an impressive and brief ceremony this morning in presence of Deputy MS, MCH Hospital, Dr Shahid Hussain. HOD Pediatrics Dr. Showkat Hussain Tali provided a live demonstration of the new bilirubinometer, showcasing its functionality to the Principal and other attending staff.
Present at the inauguration were Prof. Sheikh Mushtaq Ahmad, Dr. Malik Shakir Hussain, Dr. Bilal Ahmad Najar, Dr. Asif Aziz Wani, Dr. Andleeb Majeed, Dr. Nisar, Dr. Aijaz Hamid, along with residents, medical officers, and nursing and ancillary staff.
Neonatal jaundice affects nearly 60% of term and 80-100% of premature newborns in the early neonatal period, making serum bilirubin level determination one of the most common tests performed on newborns. Traditionally, this involves drawing blood through needle punctures, which is not only painful for the babies and distressing for parents but also consumes significant time, capital, and human resources.
Transcutaneous bilirubinometry represents a significant advancement, allowing health professionals to determine bilirubin levels within seconds without the need for needle pricks. Only a small proportion of patients with extremely high bilirubin levels will require a blood sample for further estimation.
Additionally, the newly installed up-to-date audio-visual system will greatly enhance the department's ability to teach undergraduate and postgraduate students, aligning with NMC norms and requirements.
While dedicating the new equipment, Principal GMC Anantnag emphasized that this is just the beginning, promising to elevate the department to the standards of the most advanced pediatric departments in the country. The Principal also toured the entire department, commending the administration, faculty, and staff for their dedication to excellent patient care.
