It's genuinely sad when you're told that it's because of the host that the violence devil took over. It's heavily implied that the host is Arai's dead body. Arai was such a genuinely kind hearted soul that when the demon of LITERAL VIOLENCE took over his body he became kind and caring too, at least to a point.

For those of you who havent actually read the manga, the darkness devil is so strong, it breaks the fourth wall. Its arms make the panels of the manga. It even reaches through the panels.

The thing with darkness, is that we do not fear it, rather, we fear the unknown that it contains, and I feel that Fujimoto was able to perfectly convey that with how confusing the entire situation was. It felt as though it didn't make any sense at all, just *death*
Whenever I remember this scene I think about the Death devil. THAT must be THE strongest devil in existence, because everything fears death.

I think this take on the Darkness Devil's appearance got the point accross that they were all dead before Makima stepped in.
More so, Makima only held the darkness devil back, but one wrong move and she could've been completely inmovilized with no chance of getting out. With her contract, the entire population of Japan's the limit, but the way she is closer to death every time she fights back, first only her finger being damaged, but then getting all of her arm folded in a blink before she can use the force on Darkness and finally taking an entire sword to the chest just before they are taken back to the Overworld makes you feel how much of an unstoppable force of nature the Darkness Devil is.
imo darkness and makima got some old stuff they need to sort out. darkness personally made a contract with someone to kill Makima and lure her to hell. Makima when she pointed at darkness devil it got hurt pretty well with all the blood squirting out. i dont think she wanted to fully take on darkness yet or risk losing denji.
@@Huyle18 Makima couldn't kill Darkness devil, even if she could unleashing such lovecraftian terror upon her "perfect world" woulld have been the wrong move, no even the original chainsaw devil could kill him, since he hasnt been killed in the past.
My personal theory is that Makima was only able to counter Darkness because of that contract with Japan's prime minister.
As far as I remember, this is the only instance where we see her seemingly break parts her own body to attack (Darkness is damaged when Makima's pointer finger breaks, implying that the two events are linked). I suspect that the reason for this is because Makima was using the lives of the Japanese Citizenry as a buffer against Darkness's attacks, allowing her to mount an effective offense despite Darkness being an exponentially stronger devil then her. Makima's pointer finger breaking would have called on the contract, which she used to dynamically redirect the assault against her and create an opening that she could exploit
If I'm right about this, I have to wonder how many Japanese citizens spontaneously died in her stead. How many human bodies does it take to stop an earnest attack from a primeval fear?

Well, remember how Makima stated that Pochita was fighting against all 4 Horsemen and the weapon devils all at once? He may have lost, but he still survived.

This animation does a good job showing just how terrifying the darkness devil is, probably the best so far outta most darkness devil animations.

Could there be something like the unknown devil like everyone has the fear of the unknown noone is safe from that fear people fear death because what comes after it is unknown and the dark because you can't see in it so it's also unknown maybe its a devil no one knows about therefore its unknown and it just has the power to kill people with a thought since anything less would make it known

2:57 this shoot is actually terrifying if you think about it. Imagine suddenly you see a line of astronauts cut in half right infront of you out of nowhere almost without any context. Something that automatically activates uneasy and creepy feelings. The amount of absurdity and randomness is probably what makes this panel extremely scary imo.
the author really went deep with the concept of darkness in nature and how it is present in every part of the universe. for example, depicting half cut astronauts who are probably the ones who were lost during space missions into the deepest depths of space. the depiction is immensely creative.

Some cool symbolism i noticed on my 2nd readthrough of csm:
1) there is an ant trail as they are sent to hell, which could represent how powerless amd minute humanity is compared to the devils.
2) darkness' body is comprised of faces, alluding to the common "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil," mantra. In a western lens, this implies an absolving of moral responsibility. Darkness is neither good nor evil, and its body reflects that. On top of that, its design contains nany human figures stacked on top of each other, implying its tyranny and control over humanity
3) the astronauts. They only exist because of humanity's exploration of space, a dark endless abyss. By portraying the astronauts in this manner, darkness shows total dominance over humanity's attempts to overcome their fear of darkness. In addition, the praying hands symbolise how revered darkness is, commanding respect.
4) darkness cuts of their arms initially, because in the dark, you would use your arms to feel the surroundings, and guide you. By cutting their arms, darkness renders them blind to itself.
5) makima touches tolka's head, and commands him to speak. After learning of her true identity, it is clear she is controlling him to speak that.
5) when denji fights darkness, we see lots of faces peering in the background. Their expression could be seen as fearful, a reflection of the darkness as a fear.
6) i believe the frogs represent makima, and her ability to use small animals to spy

"We're being watched by devils far, far stronger than the gun devil. They're trancendent, devils who never once experienced death". I got chills reading that the first time. The fact that the gun devil, a world wide calamity was seen as minuscule compared to these primordial devils was extremely worrying. The darkness devil did a great job showcasing some of the horrors of the primal fears.
And the only devil stronger than the primal fears is the chainsaw devil/ pochita but fortunately pochita is a big softie. He's a gentle giant.

The first time pochita appeared in front of Denji in his injured state was when he just finished fighting against the 4 horsemen (so far we know that they are/ were makima (now nayuta), fami, and yoru) and apparently weapon devils (so we know, quanxi is one, katana man, and in the recent few latest chapters, we see their faces). That could give you an idea of how powerful pochita really is.

And the fear of Falling is on par with the fear of Darkness. Falling is something we're all scared of. Falling on a rock, falling from a great height, etc.

Darkness Devil is just so goddamn cool, I don't know how they'll ever top him. Falling has been pretty good but hasn't had nearly the same impact Darkness did for me, that astronaut panel and the panel where the sparks from Denji's chainsaw reveal all the dark souls hollows in the background are fucking iconic. Hope some of the other primals manage to be this amazing.
The thing with Falling is that it chooses to humanize itself. Wearing clothes, using a human head to talk, heck even talking in the first place. Had she not done any of that she'd be every bit as confusing as Darkness did but I don't think she'd be as iconic as Darkness anyways.

To be fair several people like falling, via skydiving or flying, so I think it's form reflects that.
falling devil is just more closer to humanity than darkness. falling understands humanity and in her own fucked up way respects it as she only went out of her way to kill humans in accordance with a contract.

Something that freaked me out when I first read this, I thought the darkness devil used some sort of ability to detach everyone's arms. It was when the stone devil hunter drew a circle with his blood that I realized the darkness devil hadn't used an "ability". It just effortlessly cut everyone's arms off.

i think it did use an ability, otherwise their sleeves would be cut off no? All their shirt sleeves are intact indicating the arms were simply just removed and left with an open wound hence the blood coming from them, rather than being slashed off otherwise their sleeves would be cut off as well.

The Darkness Devil's concept is interesting because it can get rid of its victims' hands. In the dark, we typically rely on our hands to navigate, and the idea of losing them adds to the fear. What I mean is, I wouldn't want other parts of my body, like my feet, doing the navigating or touching things in the dark because it's easy to lose balance. With my hands, I can quickly shake off anything that touches me if I'm fortunate.
Galgali really straight up got 10 holes blown through his body effortlessly then still came back for seconds. A true ride or die man.
Finally someone who acknowledged that, Galgali got back up an absolute unit even after he was turned into Swiss cheese

For those confused, she made the doll devil offer all of himself she did not offer herself. The contract was between the Doll Devil and the Hell devil because Makima touched and had control over the Doll Devil.

Some parts of Aot and Vinland Saga could've been better. Also not a fan of censorship in Dorohedoro, Hell's Paradise and Vinland Saga. JJK, Chainsaw Man, and Dororo were all great!

Someone said that the astronauts being cut in half and then positioned praying to their severed legs is supposed to a unique insult.
Astronauts especially the first ones to venture into space volunteered to explore the unknown or the "darkness of space". The deaths signify that they looked into abyss and it killed them.
Them praying like that is a form of forgiveness for commiting the "crime" of exploring the unknown.

What I love about this bit is how panels begin to stop being used in the presence of the Darkness Devil, implying his power transcends the very fabric of the reality. The tone was set the moment a line of astronauts cut in half showed up. The bodies of those who ventured too close to Darkness itself.
i fucking love beings that are transcendal or unimaginably powerful so much so that it is unattainable. the darkness devil really gives you the feeling of "you shouldn't be here but now the place you entered from is gone" vibe.

The anime is great, but the manga has such a unique vibe in its own medium, and you managed to capture and ENHANCE that very particular feeling. Keep up the work, this is absolutely amazing!!!
the concept of their being an endless variety of doors that just go on and on for enternity gives this "you entered a place you dont wanna" like those doors are entrance so this supposedly hell

Words cannot say how excited I am to see this whole scene be animated and fully fleshed out in color. The helplessness. The hopelessness, the terror in everyone's eyes knowing everything they do is worthless, yet they still try. I hope this experience ends up being creepy and haunting just like when Makima used her abilities at the shrine in the anime, the eerie music playing in the back while people scream.

So I was doing research into Egyptian gods for making a story and I found Kek/Kauket, the Egyptian God of darkness. I read into it and they also mentioned the Ogdoad of Khmunu, the four frog gods and snake gods of chaos. I don't know if anyone mentioned this before, but I think the Darkness Devil is based on Kek. I don't watch or read the series so I found it really cool. ☠️👍

Given that for a human, the vastness of space is the darkest thing we can witness, those astronauts may have caught the attention of the Darkness Devil
they are the accurate number of astronauts that died in space when the chapter came out, they really did die
In all of the other videos I’ve watched that are similar to this, the darkness devil’s entrance is much slower and more drawn out, and while that has its merits, the fast pace here only amplifies the fear because you can’t even run away from something like this- you can’t fight it and it’s certainly not looking to negotiate, all you can do is cower in fear and wait to die.
If the primal fears are the strongest of the devils, it makes me wonder if Darkness was the first ever primal fear. Which is why not even Makima sacrificing her own body to use her special power barely even phases the Darkness devil... it's also freaky how it only arrived to kill them all for the most part, wondering if it really was to capture Makima or if it was simply just bored out of its mind.
Also freaky how it is so old that it speaks a language likely long since forgotten, and that holds such power that the simplest words can be used as massive weapons to instantly obliterate anything that hears it.
I wonder how strong the "death devil" will be if theres one. oh- btw what if theres a "devil devil". a devil, who represents humans' fear of devils, that would be sick
@June_thehuman I believe there is a Death devil. It's not a primordial, though, from what I know. It's one of the 4 horsemen devils, We know one as War, there's Death, and pestilence(which was I believe weakened or killed by the chainsaw devil before the Chainsaw devil was wounded by Pestilence(this is before our mc)). As for the 4th, I dont remember, but I believe it to be a conquest... though I dont believe conquest is a fear, so I'm not sure what it would be replaced with in the anime/manga's context.
I believe it is described though that the Death devil is by far the most powerful out of all the ones listed above... in comparison to a primordial, however, I believe they are at the least the closest to matching their strength.

I read the colored manga first and this scene was already quite impressive... But his in black and white and with that soundtrack - this literally gave me goosebumps!!! 😅

Falling helped adding more character into Asa and Dennis plus is a veey good devil overall

Just look at all the hopelessness. They were all wishing for something, and then died, that's just some disturbing stuff right there. The two people tried to go and attack the Darkness Devil but then gets killed off immediately. They're all helpless, Stone Devil was crushed, and that one guy who tried to axe kick the Darkness Devil got split in pieces, very dreadful.
Pochita got jumped immediately in hell by countless devils the moment he got teleported
And here we have hell being completely empty when the Darkness Devil made its entrance

I picture that in later chapters denji decide to go to hell and try to find the blood devil to bring power back but instead he get more than he bargain for like he met his colleagues those devils who use to work for public safety those who are pochita's followers, Xuan xi's girl fiends in their devil form, and when the primal fear devil's shows up denji decide instead of fighting them he decide to negotiate with them instead.

this was easily my favorite part of the whole manga. got chills through the entire hell segment. from "permission to kill myself?" to the praying astronauts to the arms being the panels, to the darkness devil himself and his fight with makima..... so cool.

i think we do not talk a lot about how the hell itself looks like... it's not dark. it's not flaming. there's no fire. hell is a wicked place but is also a bright one, as if there's always daylight-not night. when darkness arrives, only then the blackness descend but... otherwise? it's even hard to describe. the thousands of doors floating above them, some limbs scattered on the field of... flowers.... wow. so groestque and suffocating, i love it.

And most importantly it terrifying suffocating then it enter from above and *bam* all the thing goes wrong
The whole visual design of CSM's Hell is a seemingly infinite liminal space bordered by the dwellings of the Primal Fears. Its, on layman terms, being tossed into the backrooms. The whole field is the basis unaltered, but when a Primal Fear descends, Hell shapes to their designs.
To have Fiends shocked to the core from coming back to Hell, to the point of wishing death, means the alternative is worse: Under normal circunstances, Hell must be a feeding frenzy lesser Devils avoid skipping into the human world.
And based on this and Part 2 of the manga, the oldest Devils are just idle observers until conjured by an outsider or external stimuli happens. They're not moved by want or need, only being. To do the thing they incarnate, and they have eternity to be.
When the fiend asked for permission to kill itself, that is when you know you are in some serious shit. Probably the strongest Devil we have seen so far and by a ridiculous margin.

Can we take a second to appreciate the fact that the thing that stands out the most about this devil is his pitch black cape, it literally stands out against even the darker shades grey in the panels as just being a complete void.
This was a masterpiece the way all the sounds matched the scenes 🔥

I read somewhere that the praying disemboweled astronauts are supposed to represent the people who've died in humanity's pursuit to the stars, specifically Apollo 1, where all three pilots died to a fire in the shuttle. There's a picture of the three of them praying over a miniature model of the shuttle they'd die in, exactly like the astronauts are.

i like how they were faced with like a endgame villain halfway through a series and nobody has a special power up, no plot armor, they had to call in makima and only barely got out alive, its even likely denji will never reach the level of a primal fear

The darkness devil is absolutely terrifying, the concept of it, its powers, the design, everything about it terrifying and amazing at the same time. Fujimoto is an absolute master
I never thought any characters in fiction can get as terrifying as WoU from JoJo part 8 and GOD from OPM but oh boy after seeing the darkness devil and the eeriness this video gave it its 100% getting in my list the 3rd most terrifying being
"We were never afraid of the darkness we were afraid of whats gonna come out of the darkness"
I wonder how well the studio will animate this. The voice acting, sound effects and animation have to be really dark to convey this level of hopelessness these panels send down your spine.
I think that if they do this whole sequence without music in the anime, just talking and sound effects, it would be insanely scary. Just a complete silence interrupted by screams of pain and fear, with body parts going flying. Chills just thinking about it.
