Hi everyone, I’m Shingo Tamagawa, the director.
I hope you enjoyed watching PUPARIA.
Thank you so much for all the feedback! I’ve read all of them and seeing how they contain so much passion made me feel really glad to have made this film.
I’m now starting on the preparation of my next film, little by little. My method requires a lot of time and effort, so I don’t think I will be able to release it easily. But I’ll definitely release it, and I’m planning to make something better than this film, so I hope you will be patient.
And lastly, I hope you will be able to find some relief in this tough situation the world is going through right now, no matter how small it may be.

It's the very primal, animal-like movement when they turn their head away. They don't direct their head movement with their eyes like a human would, but rather their head movement directs their eyes like an animal.

I love the artstyle!! Haven't seen experimental charadesign since the anime Gankutsuou which I definitely recommend watching it's a masterpiece an underrated and hidden gem that deserves more love and appreciation, I definitely recommend watching it it's so good probably the best adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo

i found myself trying to figure out the meaning of this video then i just stopped and thought- it is such a human thing to do to always try to add meaning to things. we go our entire lives searching for meaning… why can’t this video just exist and be appreciated in its beauty without it having some deep, metaphorical meaning. the first thing i noticed about this video is the amazing detail and art. observed for us to see and experience what came from another persons beautiful mind. the fact that i can be here witness something so pure and beautiful is beautiful in itself.

Its like a dream. and sometimes that is good to have an experience of art that is a dream.
When I was a kid, I would consistently have dreams that featured otherworldly creatures and sceneries; visuals like this. I’ve never seen anything in real-life illustrate the kinds of things I had in my dreams before. It’s just, words don’t do it justice, you know? Art is the only way to explain certain things. And for me I understood something from this that was so deep and meaningful to me-something I’ve..seen before. It’s hard to explain but the way art can make people feel is beautiful, isn’t it?

Based on the interview, it now seems to me, that the "Puparia" is an depiction of the artist’s creativity path. Creatures and locations is his hobby and live. Drawing, as a calm and beloved place, that brings him joy and fun (first woman scene) became hostile and disturbing, (scene with man and rooms) because he start worked in anime industry.
In some moment he leave his busyness and stopped drawing at all. (women in red dress without any creature) And finally he returned back reborned with "Puparia". People on last scene are us.

After watching the behind-the-scenes video of the animation, I changed my interpretation of the animation! Haha. Tamagawa says that he wanted to express his feelings clearly in the animation, and talks about what specifically, he says that the values of humanity are being lost, and that he wanted to convey a certain comfort to the viewers in the animation, so I started watching Pulparia by different way than before, a representation of an alien invasion as I said in my last comment, in this one, I will comment scene by scene:
- The animation really seems to "talk" about the degradation of humanity and a certain fear of the future that awaits us, the first scene seems to be a girl reflecting looking at us humans from the past, and the creature behind her may indicate that it is in the future , in addition to the remains of poles and other things contrasting with the beautiful flower bed, indicate that there may have been some war or conflict.

Then the animal that was next to the girl seems to look briefly at us and then at her as if warning that he was leaving, and for me, the animal represented comfort with the present, sleep, the deep sleep of our minds in relation to things that are happening in our time, as soon as the animal leaves, the girl seems to wake up and looks back, that's when she sees something curious, ancient humanity and that's when we see her too, so she looks with a perplexed expression and curious looking at the past, and we have varied reactions facing it, that is, our future evolution, some seem to be perplexed, curious, a woman even seems to be admiring with satisfaction, others seem to be judging, a woman seems to be very perplexed and confused in while the man next to him seems to be feeling guilt and worry about the future, and finally that boy who seems to be immersed in his thoughts, quite perplexed and reflective, then the girl from the future looks at the horizon again as if she is thinking, how can we get there? to such an extent? It showed us our future little by little, each scene seems to advance a little in the future, and they all indicate something bad, in the form of an alert and a warning, so in the end, we continue to be alerted by the empty and worrying landscape and by the girl's worried and fearful look. of the future, but at the end of it all she smiles at us from the "past" conveying the author's hope that humanity will be able to write a better future than that of Pulparia, and the beautiful yellow flowers that grow on the left of the wall (which represents the divider of past and future), amidst the many thorny plants, also highlights this.

To me the the red dress girl looks as if she's in a forest what looks like the connections in our brain, maybe it's as if dreaming
If she is looking at us, maybe she's pointing left(towards beginning of video) as if telling us to look back at the past, when times were "better" or to learn from the past

did read, do care, but whats with the english? are you japanese? the language barrier makes communication artificial. to truly translate something you must adapt it to the foreign mind. and to do that you must first adapt to it yourself

there's just this odd yet calming, otherworldly feel to this animation. the graphics, characters are absolutely gorgeous. can't say there's a strict storyline. but the plot somehow hangs in there via the eerie character expressions, somehow hopeful.
This feels like the opening cinematic for some obscure JRPG that would have videos essays made about it 15 years later explaining why it's an underrated masterpiece.

I imagine what will captivate people most about this short is the amazingly intricate backgrounds or the incredibly detailed supernatural creatures and people, but what really astounded me was the sneakers the girl in the beginning is wearing. They're the most realistically animated and drawn shoes I've ever seen in a work of animation. Stunned me with how evocatively realized they were.

なんだかディストピアとユートピアが混ざったような、境界線が曖昧で、美しさと恐怖が同時に存在してるような、、すごく心に感じるものがありました。
インタビュー動画も拝見して、共感する部分が多かったです。
ストーリーが面白いとか作画がすごい映像作品ももちろん素晴らしいけど、作ることそのものから作者の内面を感じることができる作品は多くないと思います。このPUPARIAは正直偶然TH-camに出てきて知りましたが、運命のようにも感じました。たった数分の映像でも、何時間もその世界にいたような、超大作の映画を大スクリーンで見たような没入感とこの画面の奥に広がる世界に触れられた気がします。ありがとうございます。

tbh, artistic stuff like these is better to be short in my opinion. thats how the magic works at my brain, giving these all majestic in just short period of time, really make it more, you know, magical, rather than stretch it into a longer medium.

The 'youth' at the end seriously feels like some kind of super organism who is the culmination of billions of years of evolution of a planet; where all iterations finally resulted in a godlike being of combined physiological and mental transcendence. His expressions make it seems like a tiny lifeform patiently endured everything to eventually come out on top, and he has both a higher vision of the ultimate purpose of life yet at the same time, a young, gleeful endearment to his own impressiveness.
Really well done.

I like how the crowd of people observing the alien at the end watch her like insects. They stay still and blink quickly like bugs. In contrast the alien is constantly moving and smiles in a warm, more human, way.

In his interview he talks about how he feels as though in modern day society people lose their individualism and it becomes harder to just be yourself and focus on your own work. He shows this in this MASTERPIEECE by giving the large crowd similar skin tones and the same blank expressions, all of them look different but feel the same. Yet they all look to the 'alien' who stands out in its outfit, hairstyle and skin tone, the irony being that the alien is more human than the humans because he is being itself, unencumbered by societal influences.

I didn't even know this existed until I saw a single blurry frame on some random profile on a forum. I was so curious and mesmerised despite the low quality that I took a screenshot and used image search and was pleasantly surprised when I got the name of this video.
I am so glad I did because I have never seen something so absolutely beautiful. It saddens me that I will never achieve this level of skill in anything I do. But I think this is the final straw that has inspired me to stop what I'm currently studying at University and take up art and animation.

I have been staring at this animation for way too long. It just feels like there is so much hidden meanings behind every scene. Questions such as "what time or era does this depict" contain soo many contradictory answers. every spec of detail seems to hold dear to a clear intention and my god, this is beautiful.

I know the original commenter meant all humans, but all humans are a species, not a race, there's a huge distinction
using the word "race" with "human" is nonsensical because humans aren't "a race", it's as simple as that
A white tiger is a subspecies, or race, of tiger though, as distinct from bengal tigers, etc. The same applies to asian and african elephants
I'm probably completely off base with this set of ideas, and I haven't read anything about this work at all. It just showed up in my recommends while looking for information about Chainsaw Man characters. It looks like the female character portrayed prominently in each scene, albeit in different forms, is some kind of dream shepherd. She guides all the sleeping souls of the world into their prospective dreams, and in the case of the man in the endless room, to their possibly deserved nightmare. That intrepid soul whom the girl looks at directly in each scene is a lucky one who gets to see the process from a spectator's position as opposed to being directly part of the dream in the scene; this is interesting to the girl, who finally smiles at them in the end.
The first few thoughts I had about this brought me to the memories of feeling like I sometimes intrude upon the dreams of other people. During those times, everything is so unusual, so foreign, and so utterly unknown to me that all I can feel is that this (these) dream(s) are not my own. Nothing makes sense, like I'm not properly compiling my own thoughts, and those nights leave me feeling like I hadn't really gotten any rest from the sleep. It is said that each day you wake from your dreams is like being reborn into existence, and your first few thoughts are lofty and nostalgic; then reality fully awakens you into its heavy, harsh realm. Just some thoughts, I am not crazy.

The main message of the animation, connecting all the parts, seems to be that an alien race invaded and dominated planet Earth to harvest resources or live here, we can't know for sure, but they seem to be destroying and leaving the planet deserted, and this alien girl from White hair seems to be different, kind, and curious about human beings and wants to understand more about us. So maybe the reaction of that girl alone in what appeared to be a horseradish forest, of surprise, anger and then fear and coercion when answering what seemed to be a question to someone, was why she was answering this alien girl, the direction where what was left of humanity was, and she seems to have responded to that against her will out of pure fear.
So finally the alien girl finds what's left of humanity after the wall, and her reaction when she sees us is the same as ours when we see her, scared, surprised and curious. Two enigmatic scenes that are more difficult to fit, is the scene of the human girl sitting in everyday clothes with what appears to be an alien creature behind her, and the two seem to be very relaxed, which could be an indication of the main message of the animation soon. In the beginning, it is possible to form friendships with different beings and people, in this case the aliens who could be some kind of Pet who escaped from the colonizing Aliens, and ended up making friends with that human girl.
The most difficult scene to interpret and fit into this narrative is the scene of the guy who appears to be in the hotel, relaxing in samba-cançao, and when he was about to enter what appeared to be his room, he comes across a being who appears to be be a moth or a giant moth, coming towards him quickly through the strange corridor of doors, while he looks at her with a worried and curious look, as if he knew there was no way to escape what was to come. Perhaps the giant moth is one of the invading Aliens that was approaching that man to do him some harm, he also seemed to have undergone medical experiments, one of his eyes had a strange red pattern and the fact that he was wearing underwear could To be another evidence of this, perhaps he had just left the operating table or was entering the room where it was going to happen, the fact is that he seemed very worried and not at all happy with the rapid and threatening approach of that giant insect whose gaze was cold. There is also the fact that the place he was in was very strange with that bizarre corridor of doors, despite resembling a hotel from our world, very beautiful indeed, that corridor of doors tells me that that place is not a common place, I actually believe it to be a laboratory, which they made look like a human place so as not to cause so much panic in the guinea pigs.
In other words, the two scenes may seem disconnected but they end up fitting into my interpretation in the end haha, showing more details of human life amid this alien invasion.

Why do I feel a strong sense of existential fear when watching this? Like the fact that this brings out so much feelings shows it's good art but like I also feel like I'm having a bad trip in a haunted house.
The final segment of the short kinda evocates the sensation of the pupa breaking apart and the fully matured being coming out, in a way, the pupa being the status quo of the people existing in the world. Or the world itself.
It does give me that feeling as well.

If this took 3 years and the length of the video is 3 minutes, a minute of the video is equivalent to a year of work. That means that a second of the video equates to a sixtieth of a year's worth of work, so roughly 6.1 days.
This means that if you blink once(which the average human blink is roughly a third of a second), you'll miss 2.3 DAYS worth of work.

I've read a lot of theories about puparia, but for me I think that the only objective of the movie it's about the ability to see, how wonderful is to be possible to be granted with the amazing and most exquisite imagery that we can actually see and observe the details, that's why i think that its A LOT of emphasis only the eyes of the characters and the act to watch and look, it's about seeing symbols and processing than transforming in our minds with our curiosity and drive to understand something, while there's no actual obligation or order to have to understand, this can be and should be just appreciated all the details and colors pursued who will gain more and more dept if you keep watching transforming just like a worm taking form of a butterfly under a cocoon

@@fairybeats4544Yeah in English it's also called the "pupil", but personally "puparia" makes me think of "pupa", which is one of the stages of insect metamorphosis. So there might be some kind of a "change/transformation" theme going on and especially with the several bug-like creatures.
As for the sight thing, I feel that could be part of it but maybe connected to how you can see deeper emotions and things by looking into people's eyes, like the phrase "the eyes are the window to the soul".

There's a lot of imagery that reminds me of moths, caterpillars, and cocoons in this, and the theme of change or transformation was on my mind as I watched this.
It was so mesmerizing that those 3 minutes went by in an instant, yet it felt so long at the same time. Kind of like I was bewitched.

As awesome as it would be it would probably take several life times, this piece alone probably took months if not years to get to completion. animating, especially as an independent producer, takes a very very long time. Something of this quality for 90+ minutes would be crazy even with a large team

My personal opinion is I actually like it more as just the 3 minutes, as much as I would love to see a feature length film that was animated like this I know it would lose its spark for me. It’s why I really like it when animation of any kind throws in little bits like this instead of keeping something like this as standard, I’d adapt and just want something of even more mind boggling quality. Instead I’ve came to enjoy the gems a creator will personally work for more than a whole studio effort. Of course there’s plenty of heart in studio productions but it has to be a different kind, and I enjoy that separate kind of animation as well. I guess when it comes down to it my whoooole perspective of art and animation changed when I learned just how much time goes into it.

This looks animated with a different technique than most studio productions I've seen. It doesn't look like the traditional combo of handpainted backgrounds with cell-shaded movement. It ALL looks handpainted.

I think that butterflies are the personification of the future, for the first heroine everything is simple and clear, the second hero seems confused about what awaits him and therefore he is greeted by a cocoon, and the last one watches how people are fascinated by watching behind the hero’s back, not seeing butterflies in front of them that flicker in front of their faces, and the smiling hero directs people to the future

I have watched this so many times and it seems to me that all these characters are the same person. A man with different eyes displays a transitional state(red for alien, blue for girl). It seems to me that this story is about life, about getting rid of a cocoon (puparia), about the path to oneself and the formation of a personality. These small golden butterflies can symbolize the people who inspired the author (Shingo-san said in an interview for Archipel that he was inspired by many authors such as Hayao Miyazaki and Hideaki Anno, they inspired him to become an animator, perhaps the butterflies symbolize this inspiration that prompted the character get up and go in search of yourself.Perhaps this corridor symbolizes the long and thorny path of the animator, full of uncertainty and fear.The corridor is a very tight space, there were also a lot of frames and boundaries, which can symbolize the pressure of this industry of rigid rules and norms. Not only is this some of the best animation I've ever seen, but that character design is also seriously the pinnacle.
okay, this is good and deserves all the praise in it's own regard, but there's no way this is the best animation you've ever seen. The focus wasn't even on the animation. What made it good was the artwork and creative direction. There was very little in terms of sakuga or even much "animation" at all. It's more stills in motion than animation.

This is a whole other world of beauty, the hard work, patience, skill, and time put into this is immaculate, there is not a single frame in this that is rushed/roughly sketched, you can almost feel the emotions and music put into this, amazing work! The eyes are one of the most impressive parts in my opinion, they themselves have their own expressions and just seem so real

Она жаждет другого мира. А люди изображены безразличными, слепыми и глухими, как в принципе и есть на самом деле. Они не ведают что творят и пытаются спасти свою никчемную жизнь.
Парень похож на человека разъедаемого пороками и властью, у него безжалостный пустой взгляд. Сова это возмездие, которое нещадно надвигается на таких как он.
Финальная часть очень сильно передает всю глубину ситуации. Девушка внимательно смотрит на людей, кажется, пытается понять стоит ли спасать их, потом смотрит на другую сторону, там реки крови и разрушения, все пылает. Потом опять смотрит на людей пытаясь уловить хоть что-то. Но они хлопают глазами, как игуаны и всё. И тогда она улыбается, но улыбается чудовищной ухмылкой и оставляет их наедине с этим. Ей их больше не жалко.
