    Please note, I'm talking about basic suitcase style machines which use an external power supply or 'wall wart'. Some machines are directly mains powered and have dangerous voltages inside. For safety reasons I do not recommend opening these up. If you have any doubts, please don't attempt to repair and instead consult a professional.
    Lost or broken Power supply or cord?

    I had an issue where the audio only came out one speaker, and I confirmed the speaker worked, and even with a brand new needle, the audio only came out on the Left speaker.
    > the fix was: the volume knob (potentiometer)!! theres a tiny hole and I dabbed isopropyl alcohol into it and gave it a few twists and now the audio is good as new.
    > I hope this solution finds someone who needs it!

    My records keep slowing down and distorting even though they played fine before. I don’t use my record player often, and when I turn it on to play CDs and Bluetooth, it plays a weird ticking noise every time. What do I do?

    • @mrrgstuff
      @mrrgstuff  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The motors on these record players are very weak so any sort of obstruction or too much weight pressing down on the record can cause them to run slow. Have you added weight to the tonearm to stop it skipping as this could be the problem. Also worth checking the belt is in good condition and still in place. If its dirty or worn/stretched/loose it will also slow down. If the ticking is coming from the turntable spinning then it sounds like some sort of obstruction. Otherwise unfortunately I don't know.
      Thanks 😀 👍

    • @xaenon
      @xaenon 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the record player is slowing down, the two areas I'd investigate first would be the belt (they do stretch and become loose over time), and making sure the platter has enough lube in its spindle. This type of mechanism doesn't use a traditional bearing like older turntables do; it's literally a little nylyon washer in the well slathered with white (lithium) grease, which can dry out over time.
      A lot of these little record players also have very cheap motors, and I've found a few that were never lubricated properly when they were made. I've had to disassemble a few of those motors (you have to be very careful!) and put a drop or so of oil in the bearings. DON'T USE WD40 or Liquid Wrench; those are penetrating oils and not proper lubricants and not suitable for a motor. Something like sewing machine oil is more appropriate.
      The clicking may be a separate issue. You'll have to track that down. Is it related to the turntable speed (does it go faster and slower with different platter speeds, etc.)? You mentioned CDs; are you sure the noise isn't coming from the CD player? I've no idea why there would e a clicking noise of you're in Bluetooth mode.
      Something else to consider, and I'll put this as gently as possible: These plastic turntable mechanisms really aren't made to last, and they are not intended to be repaired. I know a lot of people get really bent out of shape when I point that out, but there's a reason that they stamp these things out by the millions and sell them so cheap. It is literally the least expensive mechanism offered today that can be called a 'record player'..... and 'cheapest available' seldom equates to 'good'.
      Replacing the belt and relubricating the spindle are about as far as I'd go in terms of any effort to 'repair' them. MAYBE replace a motor if you can find one. Anything that costs more than about $20 is just throwing away good money on a bottom-dollar piece of hardware.

    The power was fine on my Crosley Cruiser this morning but after leaving it for about an hour (switched off) and coming back to try a record it had suddenly stopped working. The power switch works and clicks, but there is no power light & it is now making a loud buzzing sound. The turntable also won't do anything (i've checked the belt & it is fine and on correctly). :(

    Question I have a cr8005d and attempted to trace the power and so the cable I’m using is showing 12 volts when plugged in but when I go to turn on the record player it only is taking at most 2 volts inconsistently it’ll jump from under 1 volt to between 1 and 2 volts

    • @mrrgstuff
      @mrrgstuff  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, an important thing to know is that equipment gets given voltage, but takes current. So as your power supply is 12v, that is what is getting fed in. The other side of the power supply is 0v or ground. Now depending where you measure the voltage between these 2 points you will get different values. Where are you seeing this measurement? 1 or 2v isn't much though and may indicate a short circuit. If you can set you meter to measure current ( it will also need to be connected up differently so please check if you are unsure) you should see a high current draw, much more than the machine would normally take. The label on the back of the machine will tell you how much current the machine expects to take. This will be a maximum, so just being turned on without a record playing should take much less current than this. The label on the power supply shows how much it can supply. I have just done a video on this here:
      th-cam.com/video/dkkijvr30XE/w-d-xo.html
      BTW what symptoms are you seeing with the machine, and did it ever work for you 🤔

    I bought a used Crosley Model CR8005U-M1 status unknown. It came with a power supply that was original. I tested the voltage and it was 18 volts. Finding another supply rated at 9 volts the record player ran but no audio. Checked the simple stuff everything looked okay. It turned out the amplifier IC was blown. The data shows it is rated for no more than 12volts. I ordered a new IC. I also checked the capacitors which are rated at 16 volts. Only one seemed out of range so I changed it out. The player works now. I tackled this because it was a fun project and I already had the test equipment to repair it. Otherwise I would not attempt to repair them for this problem since the cost to buy a new one isn't that great.

    • @mrrgstuff
      @mrrgstuff  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks very much for the info on your repair. Yes I think many go unrepaired as the owners don't have the skills to do it themselves and paying someone else is more expensive than buying a new one. I don't know what the failure rate is, but this is certainly the busiest video on my channel! I have picked up several example very cheaply, mainly the ION type vinyl archiving units, though I have a Crosely style baseboard rescued from a skip/dumpster. Presumably the owner felt the case was worth keeping, but not the player! 🤔😉😀. Thanks 😀 👍

      @@mrrgstuff My player does not have the extras. I checked the weight of the arm and it was close to 6.0 grams. I changed the needle and found some tire balancing weights that are used on the inside of a tire each is 1/4 oz. Hot glued two to the end and the weight is about 3.9 grams. The sound quality isn't the greatest so I plug in my monster speaker. Really makes a big difference actually sounds like the old players I grew up with. My wife is annoyed I am playing records all day.

      I have been doing experiments recently with USB recordings, mainly to test upgrade cartridges (I have posted a few videos - mixed results) as I have a similar ION brand turntable with basically the same mechanism. Sound quality through USB is surprisingly good, so despite the cheap mechanism they can sound good. The cartridges I believed are aimed at a 5g tracking weight, but can certainly do lower and a lot higher without apparent problem (though higher will cause more record wear). Sounds like a very good mod you have made with the weights. Thanks 😀 👍

    • @mrrgstuff
      @mrrgstuff  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Unfortunately, it's impossible for me to tell what might have happened. However, if it was working and now won't turn on, then it does sound like something is broken. In many cases it is not worth paying someone to diagnose and fix the issue, so buying another one is cheaper and simpler. You could also view it as an opportunity to look at buying a better quality turntable.

    I have a Crowley cr74 but twice now it will stop working on 33 1/2 and then the motor fully will stop working. I have tried cleaning the thing that spins the belt but it broke again today. How do I fix this

    • @mrrgstuff
      @mrrgstuff  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I can't be sure. It's virtually impossible to diagnose problems based on a short description. These machines are also very basic and not designed to be serviced, so often there is little which can be done. It's worth noting though that 33rpm records are often 12", and these are obviously heavier than the 7" 45rpms. The motors in these are very small and can struggle to turn heavier records. If the belt has stretched, then the motor will run but the belt might be slipping, causing the record to slow down or stop. A new belt might help. If the motor is just stopping completely, there is probably just too much friction in the mechanism. There may be other videos on TH-cam which address this issue. It's possible the motor might be faulty also. I'm sure it is possible to replace the motor on these, but I've not done it and unfortunately there is no guarantee that would help. From a safety point of view, the only servicing you can really do is replace the belt. Anything else will probably involve opening up the machine more, and if the machine is mains powered, there are dangerous voltages inside so I'd certainly recommend getting someone experienced to look at it. Its unlikely to be cost effective to repair so you might consider spending the money on a better machine which is more likely to work in the longer term.

    • @mrrgstuff
      @mrrgstuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      It may be the tip has come off the end of the needle/stylus. There should be a tiny pointed crystal where it touches the record. This is the bit which runs in the groove, and if missing will do exactly what you are seeing

    Thank you! I have a question my record arm slides across the record. How to I fix this issue?

    • @mrrgstuff
      @mrrgstuff  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      First thing to check is that you have a stylus fitted. On a Crosley this is. usually red and has a little rod or bar with the diamond or sapphire point which touches the record. Sometimes the stylus is missing and sometimes the point has broken off. Have a look under the end of the tone arm. It's small but you should be able to see it. If the point is very dirty or covered in fluff this might be the problem too. Otherwise it's likely there is not enough pressure to keep the point in the record groove. On more expensive units this is adjustable, but most Crosley types ones aren't. Worth checking your exact model though. Good luck 👍😀

    • @mrrgstuff
      @mrrgstuff  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldn't expect that, but it's possible it's just a poor design. Does it actually play? What is happening is that your body becomes an radio antenna and causes the interference on the audio wires. As they go through the tonearm to the amp, any interference gets amplified along with the audio. I'm guessing you have a metal tonearm. It may be that an audio wire is touching on the inside of the tonearm. I thought the metal tonearm might be grounded which would have helped, but as these turntables often work off non grounded power supplies, that doesn't seem to be an option and on the 3 I was able to test, the metal tonearm seem to be cosmetic only. I suggest checking the connections on the back of the cartridge and seeing if the cable in the tonearm is damaged in any way.

      @@mrrgstuff Thanks for the content in general, very interesting! My issue is the opposite to the original question. I got buzz sound through RCA, USB, and headphone jack. • @mrrgstuff

      Issues like these are often tricky to track down. It sounds like it could be some sort of screening or grounding issue. I would start by checking the connections on the back of the cartridge.

      Ok, you can test the amplifier and speakers by connecting it up to your phone via Bluetooth, and playing a track you know on the phone. If this sounds acceptable, but the output from the record player doesn't, then I would suggest checking the wiring to the cartridge and also that the stylus is properly clipped into place (assuming it's the type with a red plastic part), and that the tip of the stylus is actually there and not missing. If all that seems fine, I would suggest changing the cartridge and stylus. It's one of the very few things you can do and it might work. If the sound via Bluetooth doesn't sound OK, then you might have an amplifier fault, but unfortunately there are no simple fixes for these. Good luck 👍

For those wanting better, the choice at the lower end of the market has improved, and genuinely better machines are available at lower prices than they were. If its got Bluetooth try connecting it up as a Bluetooth speaker. If that sounds just as bad, then its some sort of amp problem. There are no easy fixes for that. If Bluetooth sounds OK (or you don't have Bluetoothto check), then check for problems with the stylus/needle and cartridge. Check the tip of the stylus is OK and not covered in dirt or fluff. The stylus (usually the red bit) needs to be fitted into the cartridge properly and not be a loose fit. Check also the connections at the rear of the cartridge. If it seems like a cartridge problem, then its fairly cheap and easy to replace it, and is about the only user replaceable thing you can do on these type of players anyway. Good luck

    • @mrrgstuff
      @mrrgstuff  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you getting any sound out of the speakers at all? Does the volume control make any difference? If it's just a tiny amount of sound directly from the needle then you have some sort of electrical fault. It is worth checking to see if you have any lose connections at the back of the cartridge. The only other thing really to try is a new cartridge, but that may not be the problem and may not fix it

      @mrrgstuff  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad you liked the video. As for the problem, I agree it could be a grounding issue, but I don't have any sure fixes. However, is the unit grounded at all? Many modern record players are run from a power brick/wall wart and have no ground. Also are the power and audio cables close together anywhere? There could be interference between them. If touching the RCA plug helps then you could try inserting a cable as that may have the same effect. Otherwise touching it is causing it to be grounded through you and you know you need to look at the grounding
      If the unit isn't grounded, then it may be possible to add a grounding line, but there are risks involved in doing this so I would advise finding a local expert

      If you can test the power supply / mains adapter / wall wart to see if it is outputting any voltage that would be a place to start. If you can try another mains adapter that would narrow it down. However if it was new, only a month ago then your best bet is to try to get the supplier to replace it for free.

      If the headphones are working then the needle/stylus and cartridge are working OK. Unfortunately these are about the only user replaceable parts on this, so it's going to be a fault in the amplifier circuit which drives the speakers, or possibly it could be the headphone socket as I would expect that inserting headphones will turn off the speakers, and maybe even though you remove the headphones, the socket my be jammed. • @mrrgstuff

      I'm not familiar with this one, but the power supply seems to be DC12v. Is it a Keepsake or a Keepsake Delux as that looks like it takes a different power supply? The standard Keepsake looks like other Crosleys, just in a bigger box so it is going to be a case of opening it up and tracing the power through the system. If the power LED doesn't light then it could be a worn out power jack or on/off switch or a blown diode. Good luck and if you are not confident to open it up yourself then find a local repair shop.

      If it was new, it would be worth taking back to the shop as it should not have failed so quickly. It is worth checking the headphone socket as if that works then the stylus and cartridge must be ok. If speakers, headphones, Bluetooth etc don't work, then either the cartridge has failed or there is a fault on the circuit board. Check the connections also at the back of the cartridge to see there aren't any loose wires. Cartridge can be changed, but usually lasts years, not days. Good luck

As far as I know, the product is no longer under warranty, do you have any advice on how I could get this fixed, or is it even worth fixing? Thanks

    • @mrrgstuff
      @mrrgstuff  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've not seen the C10, but from what I can gather it is actually a badged version of one of the Pro-ject turntables. These are much better than the standard suitcase ones. I have a different model of Pro-ject and it's very good. It would be worth checking if the power supply is correct. Its possible you don't have the right one and it's not powering the machine up correctly. I'd also remove the platter and try running it with the belt detached. If that works then there may be a problem with the belt jamming up, or possibly the central bearing of the turntable. With the belt off and the platter on, the platter should spin freely on the bearing. If the motor still doesn't run with the belt off, then it sounds like a motor or motor driver fault. Probably fixable, but you will need to find someone local to you to look at it. Good luck 😀👍

    • @mrrgstuff
      @mrrgstuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you don't get any sound (buzzing, clicking, static type noises) out of the speakers then there is a fault in the amplifier somewhere. Replacing the stylus isn't likely to help as this test bypasses the stylus and is testing the amplifier. Make sure you do have the volume up a bit as if you have just clicked the on/off/volume control on, then the volume may be set very low and you wouldn't hear any noises anyway. Unfortunately there is not much you can do with an amplifier fault, as it probably needs to be fixed or replaced internally.

    • @mrrgstuff
      @mrrgstuff  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, if you don't get a buzz through the speakers then there is probably an amp problem. If it does work through the headphone socket, the the amp is working partially, unfortunately there is still no easy fix. For the hum test, the volume needs to be quite high, but be careful as you could hurt your ears if you then do headphone tests without turning the volume down.

      Good question. 34rpm is going to sound ok for LPs as the are meant run at 33 1/3 rom and its close enough. First thing I would check is the switch itself. If its not that, then there is some speed control circuitry in the motor can as the motor has adjustment holes for 33 and 45, so I would expect to be a motor fault. Obviously also check the wires between the motor and the switch. Presumably it was working and has developed this fault? Thanks

    • @mrrgstuff
      @mrrgstuff  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately not, at least not on any of the versions I have seen. It is worth checking that the stylus/needle is still there (the little diamond like tip can break off) and that its not clogged with dirt. Also check the record is clean, and scratches can cause skipping also. Other than that people tend to try adding a small coin to the top of the cartridge headshell. This may help, but the extra weight will cause more record wear. If you have records you really value, it would bet better to invest in something better. 😀👍

      It's a good question, and I have to admit not something I have tried, though I have just got hold of a Bluetooth version so hope to investigate further still. What has been suggest though is that the Bluetooth mode is to use the player as Bluetooth speakers, so you could connect a sound source to like, maybe your mobile/cell. • @mrrgstuff
      @mrrgstuff  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If there is no sign of electrical power then start with the wall socket and work back to the player. It could be a bad fuse or a bad PSU 'brick'. If that checks put all fine then you can trace the power through to the motor, I show doing this in the video. If there is power, but the turntable doesn't turn, it could be the belt. If this is broken or jammed or stretched it will not work. If the motor works with the belt off then there may be something stopping the turntable turning easily. Did anything happen to the player before it stopped working? Thanks

      @@jonsmum5552 I have to admit that is a strange set of symptoms and I don't know what is causing it. On many of these there is an on/off/volume control and turning it on from there should cause the on light to come on. I can't think why turning the turntable by hand would affect this. I am speculating that if the turntable was jammed the motor might not be able to run and this might cause the power to cut out, but the belt on your one seems loose as it keeps falling off, so that doesn't seem to be the case. To be honest it's very difficult for me to me definitive on this. If the power supply was a cheap unregulated one, then it may have delivered too much voltage. This could have worked for a while and then burnt out something inside the record player. However I can't be sure that is the problem. The record should have a label stating the voltage and ampage it requires (see th-cam.com/video/dkkijvr30XE/w-d-xo.html). I would recommend getting a quality regulated power supply of the correct voltage and at least the required ampage and trying that. If it won't power up with that, then the record player will need to be repaired or replaced. When it stopped working was there any strange noise, smoke or smell?

      I'm not clear whether you machine is not powering up or whether the record turns but there is no sound. If the record is turning, then it could be an amp or cartridge problem. If you look on this video from about 20:31 it might help you figure out which. There is no easy fix for an amp problem, but the cartridge is easily replaced. Replacing the cartridge is about the only fix you can do that doesn't involve opening the machine up.

    Hello, if I mistakenly use a 12V adapter instead of the 5V adapter which came with my Crosley CR8005F, will that explain why it’s not turning on? 😢 I’m very green when it comes to electronics, but have a multimeter so wanted to have a poke around. I found that when it is switch off I can get a reading of 5V and 0V (like in your example, around 4:00 mark) but when I switch it on I get 0.5V and 0.5V… What do you think?

    • @mrrgstuff
      @mrrgstuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      If the machine is expecting 5v and you connected 12v, then it is possible that some damage has been caused to the circuit. This might then mean that even if you connected the original 5v supply again, the damage would stop it working. It's difficult to be sure about your multimeter readings, but although you would expect the voltage to drop down as it flows from 5v to ground, that does seem quite low at that point. There is unfortunately no universal quick fix that I am aware of. I did do a video about this topic, but it is more about prevention than fixing:

      th-cam.com/video/JI2Blm0MS0c/w-d-xo.html
      However essentially these (and all other similar units) use the most basic record players mechanisms available and there really isn't any adjustment for this problem. If the needle/stylus is worn or very dirty this might be the cause, but if you are going to be spending proper money on vinyl (as opposed to charity/thrift store & flea market) stuff then buying a better player is well worth it. If you do consider something better, make sure to read/watch the reviews and also look carefully to make sure its not just the same basic mechanism dressed up in a fancier case. Good luck 😀👍

    • @mrrgstuff
      @mrrgstuff  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @tiernan7829

      I have seen them for sale in stores, but I think it easier and often cheaper to get them online. If it's the usual sort of Crosley one (also used on lots of other units), you buy a new red bit and it clips into the black bit which has the wires connected at the back. You can buy both the red and black bit together. Not necessary any more expensive. You might find this video helpful:

      Its very difficult to know what to suggest as there could be several different reasons. The video does cover quite a few checks you could make. One of the first things worth doing is seeing if any sound comes out of the headphone socket. This will tell you if it is a problem just with the speakers. You also want to check the wiring to the cartridge and its fairly easy and cheap to replace cartridge. Good luck

      @mrrgstuff  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you can hear the record faintly from the needle area when you listen closely, but there is no sound from the headphones or the speakers, then it could be a bad cartridge. If there is no music at all, the stylus/needle might be bad. You can buy replacement ones, but personally I would change the whole cartridge including the stylus at this point as sometimes the stylus from one is a poor fit on another, even when they are supposed to be compatible. Cartridges are not expensive and are not difficult to fit, but its also possible there is a fault on the circuit board. If you just touch the wires at the back of the cartridge with a screwdriver, you may suddenly get some noise out of the speakers (don't wear headphones in case you do get a loud noise, and make sure the volume is up) and if you do get noise, it probably is the cartridge and not the circuit board at fault. To change the cartridge it needs to be unclipped from the arm and the wires will need to be detached from the back of the cartridge and fitted to the new one and the new cartridge clipped back into place. Problems on the circuit board are much harder to deal with as there are many different boards, so buying a replacement is not easy. Hope that helps and good luck.
