Eddyline Sitka LT Kayak Review - First Thoughts

  • A video I put together of my thoughts regarding the Eddyline Sitka LT kayak shortly after I first purchased one. As much as I liked this boat, I do find myself wanting something more. Ended up ordering a Current Designs Sisu recently as a result. Regardless, it's still a great kayak and I would recommend giving it a test run if you're in the market for a boat like this.

    Thanks for the great video. It definitely helped me decide on my new Sitka LT.

    Pretty boat...I love the amount of work Eddyline puts into the all important details. Don't mean to be critical but noticed that as you paddled across the current you didn't set the boat up for a ferry glide. You might have done this on purpose to demo the boat's handling characteristics but I've noticed that some sea kayakers and flat water paddlers apparently aren't familiar with that technique. Simply put you start off paddling directly into the current then let the bow fall off bit by bit until you hit the "groove." When you have the angle just right the down river force of the current balances against the lateral resistance of the down-current chine and while paddling with equal force on both sides the boat literally shoots straight across the river, neither gaining or losing upstream or downstream position. It's a wonderful feeling of being free of the restrictions of current forces and creates an almost magical feel similar to floating through a mogul field on skis!

      boatman222345 Thanks Boatman, ferrying is not a technique I was familiar with at the time of this video. Regardless, I still have yet to perfect it as I haven’t been in that type of situation since then. Thank you for your advice. I’ll be sure to try that out next time I have a need!

    By the way, even though I said I would buy a Sitka LT next Spring, I actually bought one last Friday. The demo model was available and I just could not pass it up. It is every bit as good as I imagined it; plus it is red!

      Nice video what kind of Werner paddle are you using?

    Great video! I'm considering between an LT and XT. I paddle frequently on the williamette, how does this kayak hand dynamic wakes from jet skis and motor boats? Where were you paddling that had the faster current and waves?

    I've been trying to figure out what the yellow Sea To Summit bag is, attached to the rear deck. Just curious.

      That’s an inflatable paddle float. It rolls up into that bag.

    Was wondering what spray skirt you're using and what are your thoughts on it so far. Thanks

    • @seanestrella
      @seanestrella  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a Snapdragon spray skirt. I have absolutely no complaints about it. It keeps the water out. The pull loop is easy to access and grab. And it keeps my cockpit warm as well. I have not been in any rough water with it but the seal was very sturdy on this boat. It wasn’t coming off unless I wanted it to come off.

    Is that green thing behind you a water bottle. Here I am wondering where I would put one and I have been looking at how you did it for a few weeks now.

    • @seanestrella
      @seanestrella  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used to keep a water bottle attached by carabiner to rear deck. Nowadays, I use a camelback style water bladder attached to my PFD.

      Sean Estrella, that thought had crossed my mind but I was concerned by how uncomfortable it would be, especially on hot summer days.

    • @lxoxrxexnx
      @lxoxrxexnx 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Nobody Special, I think you are generally right, as long as you keep the water out of direct sunlight. Our bodies cannot heat water above 100⁰ F; whereas the Sun can do more than that as evidenced by solar water heaters.

    Ooooo that id so nice how about durability?

    • @seanestrella
      @seanestrella  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Scratches easily which is only a cosmetic issue. Never had any problems with structural durability though. I've smashed into submerged rocks and unintentionally dragged over shallow rocky sections. Other than scratches, it has held up fine.The material appears to be a type of ABS plastic which allows for some flex when taking strong blunt force. Of course, there are some situations where it could probably crack compared to a rotomolded kayak. Like if you were flying through the surf and smashed the keel or hit a sharp rock with enough force.

    What hat are you wearing? I would like to check it out.

      Loren Rademacher The hat is a Tilley Airflo. Lifetime warranty and they’ll even replace it if stolen. I love that hat. :)

      Sean Estrella Thanks. A lot of people say Tilley is the best. I put one on my wish list. I’ll wear out the cheap hat for the rest of this season here in New York State and in the Spring buy the Tilley along with a Sitka LT that I have been drooling over.

      @@lxoxrxexnx You'll like the Tilley hats. I have two (one is the airflow, forget the model name of the other). They float, and are waterproof. One of mine has seen extensive use and dunkings in pools and still looks great.

      @@seanestrella That's what I was thinking and you seem pretty comfortable. Makes me wonder who the XT was designed for? The cockpit is 1" larger in width for the XT. I'm 5'-6" and 195 lbs so I was merely curious if the XT would be too big even though I'd like the extra storage and weight capacity the XT has for back country camping and portaging. No one has any of this stuff in stock in Ontario, Canada, most likely Pandemic related.

    • @seanestrella
      @seanestrella  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jay Home As I understand, the XT is designed for those who are taller and heavier at the same time. It can take 50 additional pounds of weight, is longer overall to accommodate long legs. The cockpit is indeed only 1” wider but also 1.8” longer to better accommodate a slightly larger body. For me, the LT fit like a glove and was very comfortable. The XT felt a bit...loose for my body type.
      It sounds like the LT would be your best bet but personal preferences vary. When I first started paddling, a cockpit size like the LT felt cramped. That “fit like a glove” felt more like a risk as I feared being trapped in a smaller cockpit if my boat flipped. Now it feels perfect and it’s really only my paddling experience that has changed rather than my body.

    • @nerothe
      @nerothe 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@seanestrella You'd be surprised what you will fit in once you get used to it. I'm your height but 265lbs and I still easily fit in the cockpit of a Fathom and can do self rescues. The Fathom is a little too tippy for me and the Equinox is super stable but only wants to go straight. I'm deciding between the Sitka XT and LT as a go between. I'll probably go with the LT if I can ever find one. Sadly, seeing one in person before I buy isn't an option in my area.

      @@seanestrella thanks, this comment helped me decide on the Sitka LT vs the ST (I'm 5'7 and 180lbs). The LT fits amazing for my frame. I feel really snug in the cockpit it's like wearing a shoe. It definitely does feel more wobbly/tippy though compared to the recreational wider kayaks I was use to. It took me about an hour or so of just slow paddling to get comfortable with the tippy feeling.
      Will definitely take more hours of training to get use to edging.
