      I'm Laos and I agree with u that they left out basic items. The first time my mom showed me the Lao mom ordering pizza video. I've been watching ur videos ever since. I love ur Papaya Salad parody! Me and my Lao friends love ur videos because it's so relatable. Also all my friends think I'm Thai but I always tell them that I'm Laos. I love that there're more Lao people out there and I'm not the only one! Love ur videos!

    If Lao people keep using the word "Thai" for their restaurants because "people aren't used to it" then the problem is just going to stay that way. People will never learn who we Lao people are if we don't speak up. Why not make the change to inform them about our culture?

I know more than most lao here where I'm speak and read very fluent. Although I dont have much use for reading some of my friends speak it. Thai and proud here but I have to say you guys dropped the ball on this one. Could've picked a better person to introduce people to Lao food. Do hit up +BGZTV and do Lao food some justice man.
    Also, I got to get these off my chest;
    1) Our languages are different, but is mutually intelligible to a certain degree. Whenever I go to their side of the bridge I'm quite able to survive as our languages are mutually intelligible. They're able to speak to me in Lao and if they tone it down a bit by going slower, I'm able to understand what they say and most of the time when I reply in Thai, they will understand likewise.
    2) Saying Thai is more formal and Lao is more informal is WRONG. I speak standard Thai and when I want to, I can make a sailor blush. Adding "krub" at the end of the sentence doesn't make it polite (eg. พ่อมึงตายครับ sounds totally ridiculous), and Laotians can be very polite in their speech if they want. Both our languages have in common that we have 2 registers; formal speech pattern, and informal speech pattern. For example; สวัสดีครับ วันนี้คุณสบายดีไหมครับ is very formal, while หวัดดี มึงเป็นไงบ้าง is extremely rude and should only be used between closest of friends and never to elders. One of the difficulty with learning Thai is you have to learn 4 sets of word for you and I (คุณ เธอ แก มึง and ผม/ดิฉัน ข้า กู) and using the correct one in the appropriate situation (speaking to a friend, an elder, boss, elders, customers, kids, etc).
    3) Like I said above; our languages are mutually intelligible, and we can also say kob jai ขอบใจ but it's only for people of equal or lower status; i.e. your friends or people that are younger than you, and it's considered rude most of the time.
    4) Thailand =/= Laos. Look at it this way; we're brother countries, and ethnically we're the same. We got more Laotians on our side (called Esaan) than in Laos. Most of our customs are basically the same, we have the same religion (theravada buddhism), we pretty much eat the same food. In the end, we're both Tai (the ethnicity, from southern china, not Thai like Thailand).
    5) What's this crap about not having last names? Unless you're from some isolated hill-tribe deep in the jungle or high up in the mountains, you'll most likely have a last name. Lao people tend to have long last names rivaling the Thai-Chinese's last names. Majorities of Thais tend to have shorter last names.
    6) at 0:37, that Buddhist blessing sign is in Thai. Just something I noticed, as our countries does NOT share the same alphabet. It's like walking into a Korean shop with a sign in Japanese. Just found that a bit odd.
    I really want to rip off my ears when I hear Sulina butcher Lao words.. it's like calling Arkansas, "R- Kansas".

    Hi Fung Bros.Thank u so much for this great video of Lao food. As a Lao American I wanted to correct what the young lady say how different we are from Thai people. ("Its not that we dont speak as formal.") We share the same tradition. We are alike actually. There are so many Lao ethnicity and different regions in Laos. WE ARE THE SAME, JUST SPEAK DIFFERNT DIALECTS. Yes, our food is similar to Thai Isan. In fact Thai isan once had 16 provinces in their country. And most of the people are Lao. I dont want to get to political but I just want to address the correct answer to your question. Most of our Lao dishes are salad, soups, grilled meats using lots of herbs, stews, stem vegetables, and sauce of different flavors. And most of all, its not the padek is what you will know us for. We worship our sticky rice. Without our rice, our food will not taste right! To most Americans its bread and potatoes. For Lao people its all about OUR STICKY RICE. For all the Lao American that does not know about our cultural please feel free to READ ABOUT LAOS and understand your roots. Thank you for your time. YOUR THE BEST FUNG BROS

    I'm Lao and must give some obvious criticisms for this video.
    1. There are many Strictly Lao restaurants they could've visited in the region.
    2. Not to be disrespectful to the fellow Lao-Americans in the video, but the pronunciation of words and names of those dishes are completely different from what I've learned. And I am very fluent.
    3. The history lesson is incorrect. Lao people do have last names. His example does not speak for all Lao-Americans.
    4. Not all Lao-Americans are Buddhist.
    5. Their explanation of the Lao-American profile is completely inaccurate. We are NOT a dying species. I find this very insulting, especially for those who have worked so hard for our community. Perhaps this may be a narrow minded view from a specific circle of friends.
    Fung Bros, ya'll should've done your research more before producing this. Check out Lao-Americans on the east coast. Check out Laos in the House. Heck, come to the D.C. area and I am sure members of CLAY (Connecting Lao American Youth) would love to show you authentic, strictly Lao restaurants, and would love to give you a great discussion reflecting on the Lao-American community and all the great work that has been put into advancing our Lao-American profile. Again, we are NOT a dying species.
    Thanks for trying out Lao Food, but please know that your videos are more than just videos for fans. Fung Bros, you are very influential with social media in the Asian American diaspora, so in my opinion, you have a bit more of a responsibility to check up your sources and produce videos that reflect Lao food and Lao Americans more accurately.

      Jeson Souvannarath nah bro you just chose to get offended for no reason. If you’ve ever been to different regions of Thailand and Laos, you hear drastic changes in how things are pronounced. The Laotian girl says it how I grew up saying it. Northern Thai/southern Lao accent.

      La-o, not Lay-o, is how Lao people pronounce their own names. It would make more sense to say La-o-tian rather than Lay-o-tian. BUT, when speaking to people who disagree, or call Lao people "Laos people", I just tell them to make it easy and just say Lao - it seems more proper and true to the language.

    • @BGZTV
      @BGZTV 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      SMH basic knowledge bro vsld4 When two vowels are next to each other, the first vowel is usually long (the sound is the same as the sound of the letter) and the second vowel is silent. Examples: meat, seat, plain, rain, goat, road, lie, pie

      Every long Lao Last Name has a meaning. They are a combination of 2-3 words sometimes 4. That meaning would be a description of the family. Such as Khammanivong. Kham=Gold, Mani would be the name I believe. , Vong= Circle. "Gold of the Mani Circle." circle here would probably indicate family. All comes down to interpretation.

    Smh! The Fung bros actually pronounced it correctly "lay-ocean" and she pronounced it incorrectly, they could have at least found another Laotian person that would not butcher our language when speaking Lao. As a Laotian American that has spoken Lao as my first language and my entire life, I could not help but cringe at her accent when speaking Lao.

    The Isaan people of Thailand are basically Lao. They use Lao language, they eat Lao food and share the same traditions with Lao. The main thing is, the Thai government started the "Thaification" of the country in 1933 in order to assimilate the different minority (Isaan Lao, Isaan Khmer, Mon, Karen, Southern Malay etc..) into the society. Thai became the language of education and administration.
    Now you can see this in Thailand. When I go to Udon Thani (a province 50km away from the Laotian border), people speak Lao. At school, the kids learn Thai and in Thai, even if they don't use it at home

    • @LaoInformation

      +Claymore007 That's no surprise because for some reason not a lot of people, including Mien/Mienh people, realize that the Lao population includes the Hmong, Mien, and Khmu. That is, the Hmong, Mien, and Khmu are also "Lao", which is why all Lao groups, including the Hmong, Mien, and Khmu, share the Lao national cuisine, which includes larb and papaya salad. It's like in China where there are separate tribes including the Cantonese, Hokkien, and Fujian who have their own local languages and tribal names, but they're all still collectively "Chinese" and many know how to speak the Chinese national language called Mandarin or simply "Chinese".
      In the case of Laos, the Hmong, Mien, and Khmu also have their own local languages and tribal names, but they're all still collectively "Lao" and many know how to speak the Lao national language, which may be called "Lao Vieng" or simply "Lao".
      However, not every Chinese person (i.e. Cantonese, Hokkien, or Fujian) can speak "Mandarin" just like not every Lao person (i.e. Hmong, Mien, or Khmu) can speak "Lao Vieng". But, they're still "Chinese" or "Lao", respectively, even though they may not know how to speak the national language.

    • @Dtzeo503
      @Dtzeo503 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually our Mienh origins came from China. Because there are still Mienh tribes living in China which they speak a different dialect of Mienh. In that case i do not consider myself Lao at all. Many Mienh elders from Laos do not speak or understand Lao. They either know Mienh or Mandarin. Since the Mienh religion (Animism-Daoism mix) uses a Chinese script for their chants.

      +itzxari Hi. May I suggest something to you? It's perfectly acceptable and preferred to just stick to one word, "Lao" (more versatile usage) without having to switch back and forth between "Laotian" (more limited usage).
      The word, "Laotian", much like "Thailandese", is unnecessary in everyday speech since "Lao"/"Thai" exists as a word.
      So, "Finally Lao culture...I am Lao myself...where are all of my Lao people?"

      No, way. Her pronunciation is definitely NOT northern Lao intonation. She is what I call "White valley girl" Lao accent. LOL. Northern Lao accent is more softly spoken/ little slower, while Vieng accent has a sharper clearer tone and Southern Lao and Issan is very nasally more tonal, sound very much more (Khmeric/Viet). This isn't a surprise though cause a lot of overseas Lao people are from the South and have more Khamen and Viet ancestry (even though a lot chose to ignore historical ancestry).

  • @The.FA.Republic
    @The.FA.Republic 8 ปีที่แล้ว +31

    The mistake and confusion to begin with is going to a Thai restaurant to represent Laos. The huge confusion starts right off the bat in the video. Im sure those are Lao people that own that restaurant, but common. Theres nothing wrong with being U.S. born but at least have some real knowledge or do some real research of the country you supposed to represent. But it couldnt be helped cause the way youtube works is you get someone who is a popular social media personality to rep their own culture. So I understand along the line of that aspect of it. Its TH-cam of course. But First off with the language itself how she stated Thai is formal and Lao isnt. , Thats based off her perception and what she know. The Lao language has many dialect itself. From Tai Vien (dialect of the capitol), Tai Neua (far), Tai thai (close), Tai Sahvahn, Tai Paksei, and many more, some are very proper while others arent so formal. As for Lao people not having last names? Where did that guy get his information from. That is so far from the truth. Majority of Lao people all have a last name (family name). The only reason a family here in the U.S. wouldn't have one is they have no history to their roots in Laos (such as being sold to a family, being an orphan, etc), or the name has communist ties/ or the family here could be hiding from communist Laos (which means if they ever want to visit Laos, they would need to go by a different family name). Dont just make stuff up such as "Lao people don't have last names" just wow... such a misrepresentation of our culture all together. And the food of choice was so typical that it was close to what Thai food is. Doesnt even show the true diversity of what Lao food is. Where's the Gang Naw Mai (bamboo shoot strew), Gang Kee Lek & Hoy (Authentic Lao strew w/ snails), Gang Kai Mote Dang (red ant eggs strew), Tom seen Nua (beef soup), Kao poon and so much more. Also Pho isnt a laos dish, we got that from Vietnam and she just said we add shrimp paste. LOL Home style Laos Pho is made with Oxtail. Sure we have it at Lao restaurants but Lao Pho isnt a highlight of any Lao restaurant I'll tell you that. I respect and like that you guys were trying to help represent Lao food and its culture, but most definitely, this isnt it. At most, probably teenage Lao kids could relate to this video and believe this is what Lao food is. Sorry guys.

      Noctis Yes, Lao food have similar food as Thai/Vietnam but have different name and different ways of cooking. Those desserts aren't even Lao, most Lao desserts have their own variations/names even if they look similar to Thai. Lao desserts are generally made with the combination of tropical fruits and glutinous rice products. The common ones are wrapped in banana leaves, steamed, or dessert soup.

      Honestly I'm a "teenage Lao Kid" and I agree with your statement 100%. I was really disappointed by their choice of food and the misrepresentation of our culture. But I'm also saddened that you generalized the younger Laotian generation as well. We all don't disregard our culture. I'm 19 and was born and raised with a very much Laotian family. Every dish you have named I used to see almost every day and night in the kitchen being made by my aunt and grandmother while my mom was working the night shift to be able to provide for me. this comment may be 2 years late but I also thought that I should speak up and let you know that not every Laotian teenager disrespects and disregards their roots. It depends on how they were raised and how much they really are proud of where their roots are.

Keep it coming :) FYI to some :) Fer - in Lao, Pho - in Vietnamese, Kuay Tiew - in Thai, Koi/Koy - in Lao, Larb - in Thai. Lao is spelled Lao until the French colonized the country and put the letter "s" at the end. The people is Lao. Not Laos or Laosian. Lao is sandwiched between Thailand and Vietnam. Top are China and Myanmar (aka: Burma) and bottom is Cambodia. And you are absolutely correct that most Thai foods stemmed from Laos. Well this opened up my eyes about differnt Lao people from differnt states in the US. He said you make up a last name i dont beleive that unless you didnt have a last name or didnt know it at all, in Goergia generally Riverdale, Forest Park, College Park GA (Metro Atlanta) theres a big population of Laotians. We are the asians typically known as having the long last name, for instants mines is Thapvongsa, my dads is Sripasert, theres no laotian i know that doesnt have a long last name. Such as Thammvongsa, Souksavath, Phoumavong. I guess West Coast Laotions arent the same as us Southside Laotians.

      +Shiho Minami I'm afraid you are incorrect. Thai people originated from Lao people. The things you consider as Thai food are actually original Lao food. We still eat them in Laos even though many Thai people know how to cook Lao food, but decided to promote them as Thai food to try to give themselves credibility apart from Laos.

      +Nattapol Phorueng You must be uneducated, so please buy yourself a world map. Laos was voted by Western foreigners and won the award for World Best Tourist Destination, so perhaps you should ask yourself if there is a Thailand in this world considering that it lost the award to Laos? Or better yet, what world does Thailand exist in since the world that we all live in has Laos winning the World Best Tourist Destination Award. :)

      @ภูวมินทร์ วงศ์เมาะ Green curry is Gang Phed and it doesn't go well with sticky rice thus the reason why it's not a popular dish in Laos since Laotians consume sticky rice daily. Green curry/ Kang Phed is best served with steam rice.

    Girl no, homegirl is triggering me right now. My grandparents are both ethnically Thai/Laos. Growing up in was able to speak both languages and understand one another. Both languages can be formal, saying one is more formal than the other is kinda downing the other one. Traditions are almost exactly the same, just history has made both ethnicities separated by two different countries. I lived and worked in Laos for 4 months and visited my family in Thailand numerous times..and let me tell you , the language can be formal depending on how you speak. A lot of lao people believe or not can pick up Thai easily than Thai learning Lao.

      +Terry Rajsombath That's why we suggest using "Lao" since it only has one pronunciation and is a more universal term than "Laotian", which has multiple pronunciations.
      The word, "Lao" exists in English, Lao, Vietnamese, and Thai = 4 languages
      but the word, "Laotian" only exists in English = 1 language

    Actually, the Lao language can be as formal as Thai, but if it's her opinion then okay. And Lao people do have last names, let's not forget that lol. But they could have chosen another person for this tho, as mentioned by those before me, such as; BGZTV or Anthony Bourdain, etc.. and about the "people arent used to it", people should really start to put Lao instead of Thai if they're going to open a Lao kitchen. Who cares if people aren't used to it, Lao cuisine and the country itself needs to be recognised.

    Hello guys! I believe in this video clip has a lot of confusion about Thai and Lao food. Many items that are claimed as Lao food in this clip are Thai. Since the two countries are next to each other, the food, of course, got influenced. O-liang is definitely a Thai drink. Also, crying tiger is Thai. We also have Tum Pla Daak, called Som Tum Pla Rah, that might got influenced by Lao food. Laab as well. Some items can be claimed as both nation food. Some are slightly different. What I ask for is that the program presenters and director must do more homework in order to present things correctly, and if anything is from both countries, make sure to mention it. Otherwise, you guys are creating a social war.
    Please DO MORE HOMEWORK before presenting anything!!!!

    First I've ever heard of Lao ppl having no last names. Everybody I know has family names. Never heard of invented names before unless they were really not Laotian at all and were from other countries and using a Lao identity to qualify to come to America while in the camp. Or they were too young and didn't know their family name. Some indigenous Lao didn't use family names but they usually don't identify as Lao. I'm not going to single them out by naming them because not all of them did. Just wanted to clarify that tid bit where they said Lao people don't have last names and got 'invented' ones when they came to America or other countries that accepted Lao refugees.
