George Condo "Internal Riot" at HAUSER & WIRTH

  • James Kalm has heard the rumors of the possibility of a reinstated Covid-19 “lock-down” for New York City and its environs. Having recently endured nearly five months of gallery and museum closures, your correspondent was anxious to get some views recorded of shows around town before another possible quarantine.
    George Condo “Internal Riot” at Hauser & Wirth is the artist’s debut exhibition with this gallery. This show comprises two floors of works, a selection of large “Cartoon Cubism” head studies, and a selection of works on paper. Condo has been one of the most recognized American painters from the 1980s. His melding, mixing and matching of strands of art historic styles, classic cartoon figuration, Action Painting, and pretentious punning of the “great painting” is comical, and nothing short of audacious. These works were produced during the quarantine, and display the artist’s whimsical ability to suck every influence, media, style and aesthetic into an ever-expanding black hole of kitsch. A musical introduction is provided by Wayne Tucker Music @waynetuckermusic. This program was recorded on November 19, 2020.

    THANKS, TO OUR WORLDWIDE TRIBE…Since the inception of the James Kalm video project, about fifteen years ago, it’s always been a hope and desire to reach out to a group of likeminded artists, and facilitate an art community through communication. With over 1,500 posted programs, and tens of millions of views, I’ve been gratified to watch this tribe develop. One of the most important factors in this, is the idea of creative critique, and criticism. I’ve gently invited responses, and viewers have become less self-conscious in their replies. Of course, there are the snarky (usually entertaining), and the poo-poo, ca-ca replies (which, after nearly two decades on line, one expects). Still, over the last few years, I’ve been surprised and heartened by some of the intelligent, insightful, and poetic opinions you viewers are expressing. At this time, despite all the challenges we’re facing, I’d just like to acknowledge the wonderful contribution you are providing. THANKS AGAIN TRIBE…JK

      It’s great that some places are open again. Maybe a video about the open galleries would be good. You don’t even have to go to them. Just go over the gallery and what they are showing. (That’s nice and safe!)

    These large cubist influenced paintings held my interest more than much of his past works especially because of his mixing up so many different kinds of media in single works & in such loose expressionist ways. Weirdly enough I had just posted minutes before a new image before watching your video & low & behold he used the very same Picasso green eye as mine showing in almost every one of his. A very odd moment to be sure. Anyway I learned lots of useful info from you with the great closups & this Condo show I found more seriously considered & better than most all his previous work.

    Lovely work you are doing here. One thing that really stands out is the way you zoom in, as you move you showcase the tactility much better than even any hi res photo can give, plus your commentary on top really ties it all together so well. Not the biggest fan of George, but his interviews are insightful. Anyway, much love and gratitude from India.

      Coined in 2010, ASMR (autonomous sensory meridian response) is a relaxing, often sedative sensation that begins on the scalp and moves down the body. Also known as "brain massage," it's triggered by placid sights and sounds such as whispers, accents, and crackles." Funny...JK

    he was really onto something with the black paintings at skarstedt and i wish he would go further into that kind of work. this set of paintings and drawings feels like b-sides. H&W know people will buy his paintings so why not show them even if it's not the top shelf stuff condo sometimes produces. the portrait of travis was also used as album art and promo image for travis scott's recent single. the same travis scott that did a campaign with mcdonalds to promote music. george condo=mcdonalds of painting? i prefer the kardashian birkin

    James, slow down. Thanks for your efforts. You are highly prized and appreciated.
    I recall seeing Condos show not too long ago. I like some elements here, but I prefer his charcoal drawing. These paint drawing leave me feeling rather awkward or uncomfortable, and cold and dissatisfied. I think I detect some cubistic multiples aspect, as well as slap dashed sloppinish. The tiles seem interesting but not compatible with the imagery. Superficiality seems to be an issue.
    Thanks again Loren and Kate.

      I'm under the impression that Condo has become a victim of his own success and is now trying to create a "formula" to produce product. I believe he is a talented artist and I hold hope that he breaks through this pressure to maintain value to those who enjoy art as a commodity and begin to create work that has more meaning.

    • @jameskalm
      @jameskalm  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DK-jg5vk Unfortunately, an artist who has achieved this level of recognition in the market is, if they want to continue being represented at this level, obligated to maintain their market’s brand and image. We’re not talking about being part of an Avant-garde here, just maintaining a generally recognizable commercial product. The changes will be incremental, and timed to coincide with market forces… Any ambitious artist outside this enclave, without these motivations, would gladly welcome these challenges… JK

    To me, Condo's work just keeps getting better and better. I wasn't much of a fan of his earlier paintings, which to me were just cartoons that were sort of forced on the viewer. I mean, it was sort of interesting conceptually, but they didn't really move me much. But this work is really getting good...goofy, sinister, subtle but energetic, controlled and wild at the same time. To me, he's kind of getting to something similar to Guston...different, but similar. I mean, if you pair Guston with Charles Bukowski, then maybe Condo with Franz Kafka, you've got a pretty good serving of existential angst and cynicism to feast on for some time. Bon appetit.
