Joe Barnes is a meditative monochromatic painter. His work is in the permanent collection of the Museum Katharinehof-Kronenburg, the Hood Museum of Art, and the Karl Ernst Osthaus-Museum. To see Joe Barne's work or inquire for sales, please visit: www.joebarnesartist.com/
I spent the past two years creating my first photography book titled 'Loft Law. The Last of New York City's Original Artist Lofts' about artists living under the protection of the Loft Law. The law, enacted in 1982, granted protection and rent stabilization to thousands of artists who were living illegally in commercial and manufacturing zoned lofts in neighborhoods like Soho, Tribeca, and the Bowery after the manufacturing industry predominantly left Manhattan. I photographed and interviewed over 75 artists who are still living in these incredible lofts to this day. The photographs explore some of the most unique beautiful, and hidden artist studios across New York City. The book includes writing and personal stories from the incredible group of artists featured in the book.

I am Joe's son Craig and wanted to post a personal thanks for creating this and posting. Thank you Josh
Of course. I feel lucky and honored to have met Joe and photographed him.
Joe is a lovely man!
Joe is a very handsome 98 yr old!
What an astounding man! Please get all his memories down in a tape recorder....he has lived an amazing life in an amazing time ...just wow. Creativity is a life force.
Your dad is super cool. How lucky are you!!!
Josh, I am Joe’s son Wayne. I am extremely grateful that you made this video about my Dad. It brought tears of joy to my eyes. Thank you so much!
❤
This means the world to me, thank you Wayne. It was an honor to meet, photograph, and spend time with Joe.
@@joshuacharow I grew up around the Barnes family and it was a pleasure seeing Joe still going strong
Lucky man to have such an eclectic cool dad.
Wayne, if you don’t mind answering, where could we find some of your dads art on line to look at??
“Just paint”…. No more complicated than that.
while everyone seems focused on bio-hacking and the next drug, it feels like "art" and/or creating is a ticket to a long and healthy life. great video.
To all young artists who are watching this… Do not ever give up on your craft…don’t set it down and say you’ll pick it back up later because before you know it later is here. Do what you have passion for not what society thinks you should do. If you love doing art then figure out a way to do it and get paid for it. God, sometimes I wish I could turn back the clock.
Joe does not sound like a 99-year-old. His speech is smooth and eloquent. Amazing! What an interesting person he is.
He could be 80s or in his late 70s, I guess art keeps you young. What an inspiration.
Craig and Wayne, let your dad know that he is greatly admired and appreciated. (I related to him and his life and work very much. I am a 75 year old painter (former architect, former biologist). I have painted all my life since knee high.) I hope he remains healthy and happy a long time to come. He seems like a "cool" guy. Best to all.
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much , I will let him know 👍
I love this, thank you, such a delight !
As a sixty one year painter/sculptor who loves to write too, I am so inspired by Joe as I've had "some distractions" along my road of life, always living as an artist yet having to adapt mediums, ect depending on other demands.... I've always had the urge and need to create, since I was a tiny child and into my sixth decade the forever large has continued to grow, calling me as a vivacious breath, stirring me even more, a new season of sorts...... Gentlemen I thank you for your time, sharing both an artist's journey and Josh capturing the precious beauty with your eye and conversations.....
Wonderful.
Craig, Wayne and family, kudos to you also as having a parent or parents that are authentic artists in every one of their cells is a unique journey in itself, usually unconventional and an experience of its own.
Joe is an amazing man. I’m so glad you have chosen to feature him.
Beautifully done. Thank you for sharing Mr. Barnes’s story.
Thank you so much!
As a young painter myself your videos bring a sense of direction into what hopefully will be my future. I love being able to peak into the lives and studios of these artists and see their personality and warmth shine through your filmography. Thank you so very much for sharing these works. You don’t know how much it means to me
Joe is a good example of doing what you love and you will live a long and healthy life. He is a sweet soul. ❤️🇨🇦
Thank you ,Joshua, for telling us story of his life.
Thank you for watching :) Joe has an incredible story to tell.
I have the book! I was surprised how substantial it is. I have only looked at a couple of pages because I just know I'm never going to want it to end. Regards from Indiana!
This is a wonderful project. So many wonderful creative people do not get famous to the outside world and fade away. These documentary videos and photographs prevent that from happening. This man is amazing at his age!!
I just finished The War of Art by Steven Pressfield and smiled ear to ear when Joe said he paints every day.
Terrific work, Joshua.
That book is a must-read for creatives.
@@btimec5290 Agreed. As is The Creative Act: A Way of Being by Rick Rubin
Beautiful work, thank you for sharing! He looks so happy
He really is. He still does what he loves and is probably one of the coolest people I know.
I knew Joe in NYC in the 90's. One of the friendliest, upbeat people you'd meet.
you're a legend as much as those you capture. another beautiful portrait.
Love these glimpses into the real lives of artists and hearing their rich back-stories is marvelous! Thank you for sharing these gems!
As always, a pleasure to see your work. Thank you
“and this has been my experience through life; I always say yes”. Love it!
This is such an heartwarming film and cinematography of a beautiful soul. He is younger than many soulless youths(includes myself!) in many aspects. I wish to age like him❤
Cool guy and 👍 for reaching 99 years old.

Very cool guy.

Es inspirador me transformo!❤
que hombre hermosos, todo un siglo, mi respeto.
Interesting man and video. I want to see his work.
Please keep making videos
God Bless!!!
Bellissimo
I hope I'm still painting like this guy when I turn 99. Which, coincidentally, will be on the same day April 13th lol
Wonderful portrait of a phenomenal man, but a lot of unanswered questions. What is his income--earned or pensions?--and how mobile is he in such a large, sprawling live/work space, obviously requiring a lot of physical movement and strength? Does he have help/helpers? Does he shop for himself? I'm not doubting, just curious. Carmen Herrera, who lived to 106, had to hire physical helpers as she continued to paint in her later years.
798 love
Where is his art sold? I love the idea that it was just an epiphany from someone who loved art that they too wanted to paint.
You can look at more work and inquire about sales through the email on Joe's website: www.joebarnesartist.com/
will there be a way to get the book shipped internationally? I love your work and it would be amazing if I could read it from the UK. :)
Great video! What's the piano music in the background?
He looks great for his age
He is cool.
Yet above all I wanna know is health routine 😅 what a leg!
Someone know what brand/model of lamp he is using at his studio?
What is his full name please.❤
