  • On the occasion of the exhibition ‘George Condo. Internal Riot’ on view at Hauser & Wirth New York, 542 West 22nd Street, we joined artist George Condo and Artistic Director of the New Museum, Massimiliano Gioni for a live virtual conversation on Zoom.
    About George Condo
George Condo lives and works in New York City. He began drawing and painting at an early age.  He went on to study Art History and Music Theory and was a performance major in classical guitar at the University of Massachusetts in Lowell, where he became particularly inspired by a course on Baroque and Rococo painting. Condo moved to New York City in 1979 and in 1980 worked for 9 months as a silkscreen printer in Andy Warhol’s factory.  His first exhibition was in Los Angeles in 1983 with Ulrike Kantor Gallery, during which time he began his first “fake Old Master” paintings.  He travelled to Europe for the first time in 1983 where he connected in Cologne with the anarchic Mülheimer Freiheit group.  From Cologne he went to the Canary Islands where he lived for several months and created a body of Old Master-like paintings which were part of his first solo exhibition in New York City in 1984. This body of work lead to Condo’s famous manifesto of Artificial Realism.  His work is now included in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum, MoMA, and many of the major art museums around the world.

“Each piece was a notch, a chronicle of life...” as a way to respond in the moment to what is happening in the world. There’s an honesty here about immediate reactions to everyday experience in the minute-by-minute news and twitter era.

George is highly skilled in doing what he does. His work, to some extent, reminds me of that of Picasso/Braque, but with aspects of others including Jim Dine (Pop), Gupton (cartoon), DeKooning (expressionism) and Pollock (drip/throw). As in Picasso's work, in George's work there are elements of cubistic exaggeration and cartoonistic imagery with a cookie cutter, repetitive formulaic technique. Condo seems to speak to his audience of today here and now. Picasso, was about technique, decoration, and personal domestic/love life and as exception, he did a few political pieces, but Condo here is highly political, and Condo is more intellectual and better educated than Picasso was. For Picasso, art was mainly just what he did as a way to money, success and fame. But Condo also yields to the commercial drive.
Matisse and Braque were much more experimental and creative and speaks more universally in contrast Picasso. I think Condo follows Picasso in the physical product, but follows Braque and Matisse in his heart and mind. I think he lacks the qualities of a colorist and with that an aspect of sensitivity and emotional. His approach in producing visual art is related to the technical mechanical mathematical aspects as in that of musicianship or most writers. I think he works things out in his head rather than on the canvas/paper. Practice, practice, rehearse, study long and hard and get it right. Play it over and over and over again and get the most from it. Like a musical performer.
I think his drawing skills are his best attribute.

hmm...I wish there were more pointed questions about specific works in this particular exhibition. I thought that this was going to be an interview about this new body of work.
"what music were you listening to while creating these works?" This was an interesting question.
I would have linked to learn more about his intention for this body of work. How does this body of work differ from all the others? Are there pieces that have any specific meaning? Why is the title of the exhibition "Internal Riot" and what does that mean? How do the cartoon references play into the idea of "Internal Riot"? Where did the inspiration for these works come from? The question about the dates was interesting (36 minutes into the video). He says that was a key part of the series and starts to mention the riots. I would have loved for there to have been a follow up question to that line of questioning.
Idk, I feel like there was not enough time talking specifically about the work(s). Sorry, but I just do not have any interest in who he hangs out with...or his take on music and music theory.

Hello, we are listening to you again this morning George. Would you like to do a project with my 4 years old daughter? We live in Oxford, England. We could go to the U.S and meet you there or you can be our guest to visit Oxford.

I was wrong. Even for GarageBand, on mobile, you've got some great compositions. Kanye-reminiscent.
