Besides all, we loved the R Madavan 90's serial Sea-Hawk, we used to watch it a lot, when there was no cable TV and only 2 tv channels broadcasted.

Back in the day, the theatre actors were active on TV, so the better (also known as Character) actors had transitioned to movies from TV or stage. After the advent of Ekta Kapoor, the quality of TV slowly deteriorated and now it is difficult for them to transition.

I am a 80s kids and have seen all these serials.. From Fauji to Chandrakanta to Him panch to Pavitra Rishta.. and Madhavan first debut was a single episode in Zee called Yule Love Stories.. and as Ashley from Banegi apni Baat.. I was a teenager then with a Major crush on Ashley...

TV serials of the 80s were of superlative quality both in terms of stories/content and acting -- mostly the NSD grads and theater heavy-weights starred on TV in the 80s soaps. Irrfan's debut performance in Shrikant that I saw on TH-cam was mind-boggling, so were all the Star mini series which again saw most of the theater actors/NSD pass outs, and Irrfan too being one. You'll find those gems scattered on TH-cam..
Television nowadays is shitty as compared to that of the 80s.
Few more actors like Ashutosh Rana and Manoj Bajpai started their career in TV show "Swabhimaan". Actor KK Menon in " Star Best Seller "

You should watch Irrfan Khan's movie Blackmail. It is a great dark comedy. Irrfan rocked in the movie.
It used to be really common back then. Not so much anymore, mainly because the shows are so crap that actors are unable to flex their acting chops on TV, and thus never impress movie producers.

I remember Nawaz in "crime petrol" (a crime show) as a house help who murdered everyone. That is the only episode of crime petrol. he was not working in movies. then I saw him in the movie and I remembered the terror I felt watching that episode.

In India there is still distinction between tv and movies.. It's not as common as in West but things are changing with ott and digital platforms.. Tv actors are superstars in their areas and bollywood have their own erana..earlier too many tv actors made that jump but they weren't that successful.. Very few did like srk, vidya, irffan khan, ayushmaan ,hansika(south) etc.. Therecare manu others such as pankaj kapoor, sharad kelkar, pankaj tripathi ,neena gupta, etc..
There is a video titled "are tv actors disrespected and ignored in bollywood" From the same channel which will help to understand more..
Actors who would rule tv would become strugglers in movies so many would avoid that, also they wouldn't even get much chance.. But now things are better and we have number of tv stars in Bollywood but still there is s distinction.. They are doing better in ott..
But big bolly stars hosting tv has been very common..Srk , govinda, anupam kher ,akshay,priyanka ,irrfan etc had hosted.. Ranveer also tried (and failed) ..while stars like salman, amitabh, even rohit shetty had been successfully associated with their reality show as hosts for more than a decade now..
Irfan khan has worked in an HBO series. The third season of "In Treatment". He is amazing in it!!!. You will love him .....
Btw, you can watch irfans episodes only (24 mins each, 7 of them I think ) and skip everything else... bcos of the format

For the longest time bolly has been elitist. Despite the fact that TV and movie stars are equally popular, there used to be a definite distinction between the two by the film industry folks. The majority of actors in movies are nepo babies, so if you want to break into the industry, you only have one option: go on television. However, things have started to change a little bit, and now "tv stars" are also getting bigger roles in movies, like moni roy recently Brahmastra. ott has recently given them great opportunities too recent leads on ott shows include Karan Tacker, Mohit Raina ( popular tv heroes) and many others.

Indian TV has always been just soap operas and sitcoms, since majority of the viewers is families, especially aunties. Also, tv shows had very low budget, they ran for years without seasons tbh. Other interesting genres have developed only recently with the rise of western influence and high population of youth, OTT, the urge to compete globally, etc.
