I had one of these beautiful receivers. It was my first HF receiver back in 1976 when I got my Novice ticket. I used this radio along with a Hallicrafters HT 37 transmitter. Got some great contacts. 73s Rob,wa2fmh.

Great video of a nice classic Hammarlund Rx. As a teen, 1971, I cut grass, $2.00 for an average yard, and scoured the road sides for pop bottles, 3 cents each, to raise $120 to buy a used HQ 170 from a friend. Boy, was I ever proud of my Hammarlund receiver. 73, Glenn WA4AOS
A group of guys got their tickets in high school. One of the boys' father was licensed and he got a HQ 170 handed down from dad. Couple that with a crystal control DX 60 and a 3 el yagi, we all thought he was the cat's meow. Because pretty much he was!!!
A beautiful receiver. This is the very first piece of equipment I ever owned, and was my introduction to Amateur Radio. Bought it for $100 in 1976, when I was a teenager. I still remember how thrilled I was to get this thing sitting on the desk in my bedroom and hooked up to a simple long-wire antenna. Not to mention that it seemed like it could heat my room in the winter. Great memories. Mike N8ATL

Can someone please tell me what this can be used for? As a preper and going to live off grid in Hawai Big Island how can this be of use to me especially with all thats going on with China and Mid East? thanks.
I am new to shortwave but if you buy an old radio like this you probably need to know a bit about electronics so you can replace some of the parts and to calibrate it. This is for listening only. If it is working perfectly you can see the specs online of what it can do.

These are great radios. I was in the Hammarlund factory many times. My best friend in High School was Lloyd Hammarlund Jr.

Is it just me or does this receiver have a very low noise floor. It's sounds very clean.
Yes...Very clean receiver and not much internal noise.

That was 7 years ago. I think I was using my 130 ft. doublet fed with ladder line.

Are you considering selling that unit? I'm looking for a pristine HQ-170 or HQ-170-A. I've wanted one ever since I was a young ham back in the 1960's
