      @@jadebaynes323 it is still very good for you to build "abs". not really talking about the visible abs, but the strength in your abs. everyone has abs hiding or showing, but not everyone has good core strength. developing the strength in your core is very crucial, and benefits your posture and the rest of your body!! you dont need to specifically target "abs", but training your core (which includes abdominal muscles) is very helpful when you want to become strong overall! good luck

    step one: 7:05 - do an audit of your nutrition
    step two: 10:00 - eat enough/more protein
    step three: 13:00 - lift weights
    step four: 15:20 - utilize progressive overload

    This is very personal but I am writing this in case someone is going to something similar I am. I'm 5 ft 1, 110 lbs and brainwashed. I have been eating below 1200 calories for a decade, running 4 times a week, doing yoga the rest. I am skinny fat and have been trying to lose stubborn fat for ages. I struggle with my period but I never gave it that much attention, by gyno told me that it's because I was taking the pill (which I stopped taking 4 years ago..). I finally went to an endocrinologist, thinking I have PCOS or insulin resistance which could cause irregular menstrual cycles. Turns out it's the opposite, my body simply doesn't have the energy to release eggs. I was told that I need to eat more and work out less. I am so scared to eat more calories and gain weight, but my health should come first. Thank you for making this video encouraging petite women to eat enough, focus on muscle growth instead. It's so hard to overcome the obsessive calorie deficit mindset, but we have to.

    • @sabrinarachel6053
      @sabrinarachel6053 3 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      You’re definitely not alone in your struggles ;(! I’ve recently stopped having my period for more than three months and my OBG said it was due to low body weight. The solution is to eat more calories, which, like you said, is nerve wracking and difficult when society seems to put “less calories” and “skinny” on a pedestal for women. I’m still having struggles and fears, but it helps to realize that eating more and gaining weight is much better for our health than not giving our bodies the energy it needs to function as it’s supposed to! I wish you the best of luck on your journey :).

      I have been through a similar struggle and I know how scary it can feel to feel like you’re not in control/ increase calories after restricting so long💙 lifting weights really helped me because it makes you feel strong and empowered in a fun way and want to fuel your body with nutrients rather than exercise to “earn” calories. When I started lifting (you won’t get bulky I promise) I ate more in a healthy way, which helped heal my metabolism, boost my confidence, trust myself, and have a sense of love and freedom in my body that I never experienced when I was doing over restrictive diets. It’s hard and you will have good and bad days but trying to make these changes is so so worth it. It may also help seeking support from a therapist, doctor, or nutritionist if you have access b/c a lot of time fear of gaining weight is deeper rooted/ related to mental health. You got this!!

    • @rocktheroadtowembley
      @rocktheroadtowembley 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      This is very serious but also very common. If untreated it can cause serious infertility issues. Blogilates did a video about restricting and period loss I highly recomment. And Please check out Abby Sharp's Video about how to get your caloric intake back to normal in a healthy way. I would definitely get support from a nutritionist or professional dietitian/therapist, you don't have to go though this on your own!

      did you reverse diet to get up to 1800 calories? are those your maintain? amazing job!!!

    • @RachelLaReina
      @RachelLaReina 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I’m currently reverse dieting, which I started tracking February 14. My starting calories were 1600 and I weighed 115lbs, but I was very inconsistent leading up to the reverse diet because I would have days I would only eat 1300-1500. Now I’m serious about hitting my caloric goal and okay going slightly over. I’m at 1950 calories now and only gained 1lb since I started (at the start my weight fluctuates between 115-116lbs, then it hovered between 116-117lbs and then stayed at 116 for a few weeks). Though today I jumped from 116 to 118 since last week and I think it’s because I hate such a heavy Asian meal last night, and those dishes have so much sodium. I don’t increase every week; I increase my calories maybe every 3-4 weeks depending on how stagnant or slow the scale has changed and how I feel. Today was just a bad day to weigh and take pics 😂 I’ll just do another week eating 1950 (not being picky if I eat an end-of-the-day snack that makes me go above it). I haven’t changed my exercise since I started reverse dieting. I’ve been doing weight training 3x-4x/week with HIIT cardio 1x-2x/week. Resting Friday-Saturday, and maybe Sunday. Because I have been doing such intense exercises for too many years in a deficit, I’m not seeing any drastic physical changes since February. I am a lot more strong though. I can lift a lot heavier since I started and people have commented on my arms (I’m an inverted triangle body shape, so my belly fat is gonna be the hardest thing to work on). I have fantastic legs. I’m 28% body fat I’m estimating, but I don’t expect to see physical changes for awhile until I reach my TDEE estimated calories from online calculators (around 2100 calories).
      I know many skinny fat people are told to bulk to gain muscle, sooooo once I hit my TDEE I shall make that big decision if I want to bulk and go past those calories for a few weeks and then cut again for a short period before going back to maintenance?? But I also have been told to only bulk when your body fat is at around 24%? But skinny fat people have a higher BF%, so they can’t continue cutting. UGHHHH lol I have to make a decision but at least I’m tracking and being open and patient about this.

      If calories and protein are problem, try more of plant based protein. There is almost no fat in tofu or legumes - a lot of protein, not that much of energy in it but also pretty filling and easier to digest (after you get used to it and if prepared correctly (soaking)) - I do not feel as tired as I did after eating meat. Helped me A LOT when I swaped half of animal proteins for plant based.

I think it’s been 2 months now and I can see abs and definition in my arms. So crazy how we are brainwashed to think we have to eat 1200 calories a day to get the body we want.

    I’m 5’1” and 109 pounds. So close to my goal weight from muscle!! I’ve gained about 6 pounds of muscle in four months or so and getting ready to focus on my PT certification after I get married next weekend! 😁 I’ve gotten down to 20% body fat and super excited and motivated with my goals and pushing myself. So glad to see someone else on here that’s my height and weight focused ❤️ and even getting to that body fat percentage I have some cellulite on my rear and upper thighs. It is what it is. I just love looking strong and healthy.
    Edited to have to thrown in that I started tracking my macros in order to eat more and never saw any improvement until I started eating more in general. I was never scared of food, just never realized I was under-eating.

      I am 5'3.5" 115lbs and had been intermittent fasting for awhile and didn't even realize that I had cut my calories so low. Trying to get my protein intake up and was wondering if I can get to 92-100g of protein a day (which is really hard!) do I need to worry about the ratios of my fat and carb macros? Or should I just focus on getting the protein dialed in? What ratios do you use? I am also about 20% body fat and I am doing weight training.

    I subscribed because I appreciate how much thought you put into the words you use to describe fitness goals. I like that you want people to focus on how they feel, and that people have choices in how they want to look, there shouldn't be negative or positive connotations associated with being fat or lean. I have struggled with black and white restrictive thinking, and over exersizing - especially with cardio when I was younger - to the point of hurting my mental health and my metabolism. It is so important as a fitness instructor and teacher, to understand that people have so many complex thoughts and experiences coming into this space, but that everyone deserves to make healthy choices for their particular bodies. Thank you.

I always knew rest days were important but I wasn’t giving myself enough to recover. For example, if I had a killer leg workout, I’ll give myself an extra rest day if I need it and wow! I lost the weight over quarantine & because of gyms being closed, my emphasis has not been on weight training. I have lost weight by doing HIIT workouts @ home & maintaining a calorie deficit. While I am only 10 lbs from my goal weight, I don't feel how I thought I would. I am dieting & working out but feel low energy, I don't feel fit/defined/toned & still feel like I have fat to lose. Then at 23 I started exercising for the first time in my life & using weights & now a year later I'm 122 pounds, the heaviest I've ever been, but I'm more "toned" looking & I have ABS !! I NEVER thought I would have abs! I saw a picture of myself the other day from when I was 18 in a bikini & 12 pounds lighter & yes I was skinny but somehow I looked so much more "squishy" because I had ZERO muscle on me. I was shocked! Lift weights & eat ladies, it works!!!

      I don’t have access to heavy weights, and I’m not looking to do 100 lb squats like an IG model lol. I just wanna get toned with light weights at home and non-weight exercises. I have a treadmill, exercise bands & 5-20 lb weights at home. Have any low/non-weight toning tips?

    • @abbyhoneywaffles
      @abbyhoneywaffles 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@RSyed-tu4rn It depends on your situation & current body composition. I don't have much weight either. Only about 50lbs total & for most of the time I've been working out I just used bodyweight & then 9lb dumbbells. Only recently did I start going a bit heavier. As long as you are using progressive overload you will grow muscle, which will get you the more "toned" look. If you run out of amount of weight to progress with, you can still do this by increasing number of reps, & also increasing time under tension during movements. Incorporating bands with the weights will help too. Running on the treadmill (cardio) will help you to lose body fat, along with a calorie deficit, if you feel you need to but will not really build muscle/ get you toned in the way that weight training (even low/bodyweight training) will get you.

I don’t always workout bc I thought it’d make me lose weight & I’m already underweight for my height. I eat rather healthy bc I just naturally don’t like most junk food, so I used that as another excuse. I’m almost 24 and only NOW realizing that exercise isn’t necessarily just to lose weight, but it can be to gain strength!! Now that I am a healthy weight I am trying to shift my mindset and realize that I don’t need to eat very little and do lots of cardio instead weight train and eat a good amount that will keep my body fueled, healthy and happy. I love your channel- thank you! I recently came to terms with the fact that I've been undereating for the past 5 years. I blamed the way I was feeling on fibromyalgia- and some of it was, but some was just the effects of not eating. Fatigue, weakness, light-headedness, headaches, etc. I don't really experience hunger, and I certainly wasn't starving, but I was unhappy with my stomach after having kids and getting older and I think I just did what I used to when I was younger to eliminate it. Aka eat a bit less for a few days. But it didn't work, and I didn't devote time to analyzing why, just kept doing it because I knew it worked in my 20's. Going back to school is when this all really started, I was so busy being Mom/head of household/student that eating regularly was just not on the radar. Now I just want to be healthy again- so I'm lifting again, and focusing on getting protein. I was exactly where you stated- not eating enough overall and definitely not getting enough protein (pescetarian but mostly vegetarian makes that one a bit harder..). It's been almost 2 months since starting this lifting and eating more- I feel so much better actually getting sustenance and working towards building muscle again! My scale hasn't changed much yet, nor have my measurements, but I have to keep in mind that my body takes time to reset my metabolism to a healthy place and I may even gain a little more before I see what I am working for. I still struggle with eating enough, it's not comfortable yet; but I know it's vital and I love myself enough to follow through (this has been a breakthrough for me). I am seeing muscle gains too, even if I'm not defined yet. I know I'm on the right path.
    Thank you again for your channel and content, it's so important for us shorties to know how some of the standard stuff isn't quite right for us!

    But since I found you I've learned so much about food and about my body as a petite woman and i now eat SO MUCH (literally around 2000 cals, give or take) and I'm still able to lose weight (!!!) and have the body I've always wanted and i don't have to starve myself for it or kill myself at the gym and I'm just so much more happier and less grumpy now that I actually know how to eat and workout properly. The change in me in every aspect. My mindset and my outlook are as healthy as my body and I'm doing it for the right reasons now.

Plus it’s way more fun. I’m not petite, I’m 5’9” but I just have a petite frame and was always so “petite” in that way until a couple years ago. Thank you for informing everyone with your knowledge! i really resonated with and loved this video. when i heard you say you used to be a fencer my jaw dropped. ive been fencing for over 10 years and im now in collegiate fencing, and i've always struggled with the whole "skinny fat" body type. my first year of college i lost sooo much weight, i was barely eating and what i did eat was junk food, exercising six times a week with fencing and weight lifting. but for the first time i looked the way i wanted. when the pandemic hit i gained the weight back and coming back to school in the fall, i wanted to get back to the shape i was in. i developed an eating disorder and would purge after binge eating junk food and ive been restricting my calories to around 1k a day. ive lost a good amount of weight so far, but i still have that bit of chub on my stomach that i really want to get rid of. thank you for your advice ill definitely try to focus on weight training more because i dont think i realized how much of a role it plays in looking toned.

    As a dancer I’m super fit but I just don’t look like it, and it’s driving me insane. It’s a personal thing and honestly I, myself am bothered more by it than I am by others being judgy. I’m so happy to have found you cuz before I couldn’t never really pinpoint what it was

    thank you so much for talking about this subject🥺 this video was super helpful and educational. it really makes so many things clear. i used to do random 2 week challenge workouts on youtube as well and could never see results. but i started lifting about a month ago and am seeing so much more muscle definition than i ever did from doing random 15 minute workouts over the years. don’t be scared of going to the gym and lifting. it feels good to be strong. i can’t wait to keep seeing results and most importantly i enjoy lifting now ☺️

    Absolutely loving your videos. I would describe myself as having lived a very skinny fat life. Like you I'm petite and I've never struggled with obesity or being overweight. However, as I've aged it's clear that I need to increase muscle and decrease body fat in areas that seem to be almost impossible to tone! I'm 46 and perimenopausal. I've worked really hard to manage those symptoms with a functional medicine doctor. Now it's time to really turn my diet around and move more. Thank you so much for all of the valuable information! As another petite person this feels very helpful.

    Hi! I’m 21, 5’7” and 135ish lbs. I’ve struggled with disordered eating and body image issues for years.
    I’m pretty thin and a lot of people tell me how thin I am. I even lost my period. However, I have a lot of lower belly fat, my upper arms have grown and i have a double chin. These things really bother me.
    I know that I’m not a super healthy eater because I’m poor and can’t afford a lot of nutritious foods.
    i just want to FEEL BETTER! I never have energy, I struggle with mental health, I have acne, etc.
    This video has changed my mindset (as of right now) and has given me some hope.

    Wow I'm so thankful to find this video. I've been obese my whole adult life but have recently lost 90 lbs and now weigh less than I did in 8th grade. But I definitely still have fat to lose and am skinny fat. I'm well within normal BMI and a size 0, 5'3 but still have so much fat. This totally explains it! Thank you even though it's an older one 🎉
