I feel this video would have benefitted from much more of an explanation about the latter half of the gameplay - that the horse's distance and the finish line's distance were both set by the prices assigned to each. It's such an obscure came it actually needs that much of a rules outline. :-) Really enjoying your videos - keep 'em coming!
For decades, this game, along with 2 of the others (Shower Game, Telephone Game) went unseen. It was I believe due to the tremendous efforts of Wink Martindale that videos surfaced of these three doomed pricing games. I did not have many, if any, memories of these games but then a large part of 1978 was a blur to me, plus I was in 5th grade and then started 6th grade that September and wasn't home a lot to watch. Add to that the fact that my Dad was ill and ended up passing away in mid July of that year, and that's why the year is kind of a blur to me.
If this game were to come back, instead of a horse, I'd suggest a cyclist (like the Tour De France), or a race car (Indy 500), and update the technology
Finish Line was a stupid pricing game. It was another variation of Give Or Keep, which was a much better pricing game. In fact, Give Or Keep was retired by The Price Is Right because, from what I've what I read, it was unpopular with the show's staff. I'd love to see Give Or Keep come back on The Price Is Right. It would be better than SOME of the pricing games on TPIR that need to be retired, such as That's Too Much!
I have read that and heard that too so many times about Give or Keep. What I'd like to know are the reasons WHY it was so unpopular with the show's staff. I imagine today it would not work because of how long the game took to play, especially considering that now a 60 minute game show actually only has about 38 minutes of actual air time :=\
Agreed on Give or Keep and That's Too Much. Add Rst Race to the wish list of games I'd like to see die but I don't think that'll happen b/c I think Drew creaed it.
@@meyerj75 No. I liked Give Or Keep and Buy Or Sell. Those were neat games. That's Too Much! gets played way too often, and hardly anybody wins it. Rat Race, on the other hand, is adorable. I'm not sure that Bob Barker (RIP) was a fan of that game, as he was an animal lover.
I've always thought that this was one of the better retired games (along with Hurdles). The obvious issues here were the mechanical problems, along with how the gate/finish line would sllooooooowly move to the left to represent the price of the "give" items. Loved the music cues that were used in Finish Line. Even though I don't care for horse racing myself (even after visiting Churchill Downs and nights of watching horse racing at Happy Valley), I feel that the horse racing theme complemented the premise of this game very well - much better than "Give or Keep" which was very bland/insipid by comparison.

Switch the horse with either a runner or a sports car -- and "Finish Line" can make a good comeback!
Or maybe bikes or motorbikes like Motocross or the Tour De France

Only two games from 1978 are still played, Take Two and Punch a Bunch.
As entering grade school when this was a game, this was a death sentence watching it play out.

I saw this one once in an episode on TH-cam once.
Keep or give is much better than finish line.
Give or Keep would retire around November 1990 and later morph into Buy or Sell nearly a year and a half later.
I didn't know you are a AVGN fan!
I am a fan of the pre-Screenwave era AVGN.

@@tnate6004 Yeah, Rat Race was created by Drew Carey.
Do I get the notion that Drew Carey's Rat Race was a lot better than Give Or Keep, Buy Or Sell, and That's Too Much combined?

Why Bob Barker even bother with a game like this since he's an avid animal lover himself?
He did say years later in an interview that he hated the game.
