    Nice exploration Dylan. To answer your question of “Film” versus “Video” question…It seems like it’s a difference in smoothness and where the mid point occurs in the timing of the dissolve. Back in the old days (before you were born) dissolves in a film were done on optical printers and were a bit rougher in the look of the transition, due to the optical and mechanical methods used. Today, since dissolves are software driven, they are smoother. Some would claim that the ‘Film’ style dissolve is more analog/human feeling than ‘Video’, and might be a better choice artistically for say, a retro styled production…Similar to how a handheld camera feels different than a smooth tripod or motion controlled shot. That being said, the dissolve differences are pretty subtle.

    Dylan. Thank you so much for all that you do for us. As fellow video makers, the time and effort doesn't go unnoticed. Question: Do you know how or have a video on how to make a preset transition that INCLUDES sound? Is that something that can be made in FCP or maybe in Motion? Please help! I don't want to have to create transitions and then add the sounds each time.

    How do you do a slow fade to black screen but in the middle of two clips???? Then have the next clip pop right in and not fade in? I have a way I do it but I'm wondering if there is an easier way.

    Awesome channel Dylan!
    I do a lot of short films where I have a solid custom color with a logo over the top, then cross dissolve into my footage where I have an adjustment later over the top with my grade on. The cross dissolve only works with a smooth transition from the custom color to the footage if I make a compound clip of the footage first. This gets complicated when the client wants to move something around. Is there an easier way for a smooth color fade? And for a bonus question, is there a way to break apart a compound clip? Thanks dude.

    • @TheFinalCutBro
      @TheFinalCutBro  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Dominic! Hopefully I am understanding everything correctly. So basically with adjustment layers, you can't do any sort of smooth transitions directly into them. It drives me crazy, but that's just the way it is.
      If I am understanding correctly though, you could place the solid color and logo over the top of the adjustment layer, and have those cross dissolve to the adjustment layer underneath no problem. Also you could try animating the opacity slider if you're having trouble with the cross dissolves. One other method you can try if all else completely fails. You could add a color correction effect, and set the global exposure all the way down until it's black (or whatever color you like be removing any contrast). You could add a keyframe, and then have it reset back to normal. This is definitely not the most optimal way, but it's a possible option!
      To break apart a compound clip you can select it then go up to the menu bar and select Clip > "Break Apart Clip Items"
      Appreciate you watching!

    • @dominic-james
      @dominic-james ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheFinalCutBro Thanks Dylan, yes you understood correctly. Will give it a go! I’ve not tried placing the colour above the cross dissolve.

  • @bobkrist1

    Dylan: Is there a fix for when you add a cross dissolve on a stabilized clip and you can see it "jump" during the dissolve, because for some reason, FCPX won't add stabilization to the tail it creates to make the transition? Drives me nuts! Thanks!

    • @Michael_hampton
      @Michael_hampton ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wonder if you made the clip with the stabilisation a compound clip and see if that would help lock in the stabilisation the whole time?

    • @british31
      @british31 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bobkrist1 Yea, usually making compound clips solves transition weirdness in FCP when it happens, just make sure you add handles in the compound so that it has enough to make the transition with. I also, rarely, find that sliding an edit up or down a few frames also fixes transition issues, it's a bug that sometimes pops up. The ultimate is to bounce out the offending clip effectively flattening it, then it will work as normal. Only as last resort tho.

    Dylan! Love me some cross dissolves :) I find that I am always increasing the ease amount to 100. I tried creating my own cross dissolve in Motion with that parameter baked in, but it was finicky in FCPX (on some clips it would just pop into the next clip instead of fading). With that LONG lead up, is there a way in FCPX to change the cross dissolve to be at the settings I want? Or should I take a stab at motion again? I just want to hit command+t and have a basic cross dissolve with the ease amount to 100.

    • @duranbarnett8587
      @duranbarnett8587 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can create a copy of the effect and open in motion. Tweak the setting to what you want. Save it. And then make that your default transition.

    • @alejmc
      @alejmc ปีที่แล้ว

      Can you create ‘presets’ for that transition and put that as the cmd+T default transition instead?
      Presets do appear like separate objects for effects, can’t quite remember if for Transitions too.
      If not, yes, opening in motion and saving should work too

    • @paperrockpicturestest
      @paperrockpicturestest ปีที่แล้ว

      @@duranbarnett8587 Thanks for the suggestion. Would you happen to know where the cross dissolve is? I think they try to make it unavailable so that people can't mess with the built-in effects. I did open a new transition in motion and tried to make the "perfect fade" in my opinion. I made it 1.5 seconds long, made A and B the length of the transition, keyframed the opacity of A from 100% at the beginning of the transition to 0% at the end, and then eased in and out from those key frames. I'm pretty sure I did something similar before and half of the time it would work and the other times the fade wouldn't happen; it would just do a strait cut.

    • @paperrockpicturestest
      @paperrockpicturestest ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@alejmc The cross fade effect can't be opened in motion. I think apple doesn't want people messing with built-in effects? I tried tweaking the cross fade (i.e. ease in amount to 100) and then searching for "presets" and it was greyed out. I tried making the transition from scratch in motion again... this time keeping it simple. Maybe it will work?

  • @dbelden
    @dbelden ปีที่แล้ว

    Dylan! Do you know where FCP’s built-in effects/titles/transitions are located? I’d love to customize some in Motion, but haven’t been able to find them on my Mac, and they don’t offer the “Edit in Motion” option when right-clicked. Great explanation of this overlooked transition.

    • @british31
      @british31 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a wee bit dangerous to do, but find your Final Cut app, right click and show package contents. Inside you will find all sorts of things, DO NOT go changing anything in there as it will more than likely require everything in there to work. I took a quick look myself, and could not locate the standard transitions, they may be in the Library folder (not user) under application support.

    • @dbelden
      @dbelden ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@british31 Yeah I actually took a look in the package a couple weeks ago, but couldn’t find them either. I know Ripple Training modified them to create their “transmutation” pack (I think that’s what it’s called!).
