- Piers Morgan Uncensored is joined by author and socialist Grace Blakeley and author and commentator Douglas Murray to discuss the news that Coutts bank have decided to close Nigel Farage's account due to his controversial views and opinions and feel he may damage their image and value in the long term.
Piers explains that while he isn't a fan of Farage since he desperately tried to sabotage his interview with Donald Trump, he actually thinks Coutts is in the wrong. He questions the validity of closing the account and believes this is an attack on free speech. Piers even reveals that he had to call Coutts himself to ask whether his account was in danger of being closed because people often label his own views as 'controversial'.

I still do cash for everything when possible. It is disgusting we are moving towards purely cashless because then the government knows EXACTLY how much you have and it would be easy for them to sieze assets if they deem you as a "threat"
In Canada they froze truck drivers banks accounts and also the accounts of anybody who supported them...now something similar is happening in the UK. It's a warning to all of us why cash must always remain as an option to keep our financial freedom.

Hard of me to give some props to the socialist, but she had some useful insight in this matter. You either let banks choose freely with whom they do business, or you create some barriers to refuse on specific terms by legal means. You can't have it both ways.

Banks should keep their noses out of people's opinions. If banks can just cancel accounts because of opinions they don't approve of then things are getting dangerous.
Banks are also private businesses that can drop the clients if they choose to do so.

I don’t think so. We can articulate arguments re freedom of speech (as many have done) but let’s look at it from this view. A business, as one politician rightly says, has a bias to making profit. If many people (whether customers or potential customers, stakeholders, shareholders) on seeing the standards Coutts applies to its customers are subsequently incensed, the reactions of those parties threatens and besmirches the brands reputation. It sows seeds of doubt in many minds and creates unnecessary tension for itself. It creates a PR storm of disaster, forever defending itself. And does this lead to the business making profit? That questions answers itself. That’s poor business. Think of a politician who knows they’ve done the wrong thing, and instead of being accountable, incessantly defend themselves. That alone is one reason as to why it’s wrong, in my view, for Coutts to do what it did to Farage.

The Coutts brand is now badly damaged. It’s tragic that a brand that has taken centuries to build up can be mauled due to one act of stupidity based on prejudice and hate. It should nowadays be a human right to save and spend your own money in SAFETY via a bank. We were told often enough NOT to keep cash under the mattress and nowadays it would have to be THOUSANDS of pounds being stored away - not a viable proposition. So, according to Grace, if there is ANY regulation or restriction on a free market then we don't live in a free market. Well, we don't live in that world. We, and the government, should be suing a bank we propped up to allow it to survive and that we part-own. This is not in the shareholder interest and the C-level and board should be held to account.

Banks ending people's accounts due to their views is a completely new thing brought in through their association with Stonewall and other activist groups. Politics should not be used as an excuse to close accounts. I think the banks know this, which is why they were so reluctant to provide the reason for the closure.
