  • In recent years, there have been various critiques of both Vatican II and the Catholic Charismatic Renewal. These critiques have varied greatly in quality and seriousness. In this video, Dr. Ralph Martin, Dr. Mary Healy, Peter Herbeck, and Pete Burak explain why both Vatican II and the Catholic Charismatic Renewal are true works of the Holy Spirit for our time.

I was born and raised a Roman Catholic. Went to 12 years of Catholic School. I fell away as a young adult and came to a point where I said to myself what am I doing? I need to get back on the right path. I actually fell on my knees in my living room and cried out to Jesus. He met me right there in that room. I knew nothing about Charismatic Renewal at that point , but had a absolute hunger to read the Bible. I was so hungry for all I found in God's Word. I couldn't get enough of it. My Mom always kept a family Bible on the coffee table , but we kids were not allowed to touch it and I never saw y parents open it. So devouring the Bible was so new to me. I was invited to a Charismatic Prayer Meeting by a Nun from my parish I had joined and at my first encounter I found myself saying , these people love Jesus like I do. Went on to take part in the Life in the Spirit program and my life has never been the same since. I thank God that He directed me to the Renewal. Praise His Holy Name , now and forever.

I am a formerly ordained Pentecostal minister. I got out of ministry for various unrelated reasons to my statement here. I know God opened my eyes to the Catholic faith. I am unlearning a lot of my protestant long held beliefs. I saw firsthand a lot of abuses especially with "prophecy" and "tongues". I am trying to read and devour the history of the Catholic Church. All I hear from others about charismatic gifts from traditionally leaning Catholics (I consider myself now a conservative, traditional leaning Catholic) is that the Fathers are against it. At around the 37/ 38-minute mark, Dr Healy, you mention that Charisms have been throughout our history. Please give us citations. I have been around Brownsville and Rodney Howard Brown and my training was from Rhema Bible School, I want nothing at all anymore to do with those manifestations. I want the reality. So much of what I saw and participated in was straight fleshly. My fear is that Catholics are learning from them.

I thank God for my Protestant friend who tried to convert me to her way of thinking. It made me so hungry to learn about my Catholic Faith and the Lord made Himself present in such a powerful way in 1992. Everything you spoke about is true. 🕊❤️

I was apart of the Curillo movement and attended many Charismatic prayer groups. Very disappointed with many who were involved. They were very judgmental, opinionated about my faith journey. They criticized me for praying the rosary and having a devotional life to the saints. I was very uncomfortable when they laid hands on me and started to speak in tongues over me, which I could not understand a word. Please don’t judge, which many did and do because I don’t “live in the spirit” for I do love Our Lord and his Blessed Mother and his Holy Catholic Church.

I’m sorry also that you had such a bad experience.
Unfortunately people often get a hold of beautiful, wonderful things and mess them up and ruin them for others.
The real Holy Spirit will come into a person without any of that hoop de do.
The Holy Spirit will come when you ask him and beg him and crave him and talk to him and seek him he will come.
The more you do it the more he will come. And that will change your life.
Don’t give up just because of those crazy people that didn’t understand.
It’s OK there’s a lot of disagreeable people out there and we can’t let them bother us
…because our core relationship is only with the Lord Jesus.
And Jesus loves you so so much.
I hope everything is better for you now.
But just ask the Holy Spirit personally to come into your heart and you and He will have your special relationship.
      God bless you!

I was soo upset in recent weeks hearing attacks on the renewal and debunking the gift of praying in tongues, even by a prominent Catholic priest. I am 81 yrs old and my life would NEVER have been one leading me by grace in the Holy Spirit, for almost 50 years. The enemy is attacking on ALL sides of the faith. Thank you, Ralph, for remaining steadfast in the Holy Spirit and continuing to teach the truth. By their fruits you shall know them

Thank you. I am not in the Charismatic Movement but my parents were and were helped a lot by it. I saw my Father quit drinking cold turkey after 40+ years of alcohol abuse and then apologizing publicly to my Mother. If you knew my Father you would know that this had to be the Spirit of the Lord. I don’t get the negativity on the part of some Catholics who have been attacking the Charismatic Renewal.

Thank you. This video has confirmed in my spirit what God has been speaking to my heart for a very long time. I am a convert to the Catholic faith (10 years) from a Pentecostal denomination (52 years of my life). I am so hungry for more of the Holy Spirit in my life, and an outpouring of the Spirit in the parishes in my County (only 2 Catholic parishes). Please pray for for Baptism in the Holy Spirit in all parishes in South Carolina.

I graduated from Franciscan University last year (2023). My final semester at Franciscan, I attended their Born of the Spirit Retreat and since then I feel as if the Holy Spirit has been ever more present in my life. I feel more draw to live in the Will of God for me and also feel as closer relationship than ever before with Mary, St. Joseph, and any saint for which I feel drawn to. I haven't experienced any of the Charismatic gifts, but I feel like I have received an increase of the gift of wisdom since attending that retreat.

Thank you! Definitely a timely discussion. I couldn’t help but think of St. Ignatius’ Rules for the Discernment of Spirits as a wonderful gift to the church. How can we recognize the Holy Spirit?
    a) When we find ourselves so on fire with the love of God that we can freely give ourselves over to God and there is no competition with any human person or created thing…
    b) When we are saddened, even to the point of tears, for our infidelity to God but at the same time thankful to know God as Savior…
    c) When we find our life of faith, hope, and love so strengthened and emboldened that the joy of serving God is foremost in our life…
    Come Holy Spirit!

I was hoping you would come forward with a presentation in response to all the negativity with regards to the Catholic Charismatic Renewal. Excellent "round table" discussion addressing pertinent points. The Charismatic Movement in the our Church brought my faith alive in Jesus! I had a profound "baptism in the Spirit"....an encounter with Christ! From that moment onwards I hungered for the Eucharist and scripture and anything having to do with our Lord. That was 20 years ago and I never looked back! Praise God! Thank you and God bless your ministry!

I experienced something very similar although I am still young nearing my 30s. I lived totally away from God and the Catholic Church, was into rock & metal music, during my high school I started to drink, smoke, do drugs, chase after girls, party a lot, was cursing, was addicted to pornography and video games since I was very young then as I went to college I started to gamble and dabbed into the New Age and the occult. I was totally lost and words can't do justice what torment I had to go through as I was slowly returning to God and back to the Catholic Church and it was exactly through the prayers from our Catholic priests who used the gifts of the Holy Spirit that the same Holy Spirit that I received through the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation made it possible for me to open myself up to God and His Spirit as He lead me through deliverance and also into a Catholic Charismatic Community where I experienced freedom through prayer and now I am playing guitar and singing for God and learning more and more about the rich faith that we have as Catholics, it has been a blessing and I truly wish more young people would experience that, encounter with the living God who loves us! God bless you and all that are reading!

Angry Catholics can say what they wish but they are blinded by their ignorance. I know what I have experienced with the Holy Spirit. I know the miracles I have seen and taken part in. I know how my relationship with Jesus has grown so much deeper. I love the Latin Mass as well as the Novus Ordo. As long as there is a valid Eucharist I'm good. I pray for them all, they are missing out big.

I too had a personal encounter through the Charismatic Renewal. However, we had a new group of Catholics influence my group with New Age practices. When I pointed these practices out and provided a Book by Moira Noonan on the New Age practices I was told I was Judgmental. Yoga and ESP should not be part of any Renewal. I was kicked out and I m happy with that!

Y’all, thank you SO MUCH for putting this video out. I just finished Year 1 in Encounter School of Ministry and I am in love with the Third Person of the Trinity in a new way that has TRANSFORMED my soul. A renewal of the mind, if you will.
I love learning about our faith and I peruse TH-cam for Catholic content. I have had to discern a lot of videos and the Holy Spirit has been leading me to ones that lift me up, give me His Good knowledge for my gift that he has given me in teaching others.
When we check these various Catholic and “Catholic” videos, we must ask the Holy Spirit to show us the Truth in everything we see and hear. When I saw this video I felt peace. Truly!
I have been viewing Kennedy Hall's channel and he has been saying some things that hit my gut hard, like I couldn't keep watching. The doubt hit me then and i pushed back so hard "be gone spirit of doubt" and then I fins this video. So, thanks again. The Lord is spreading His Encounter missionaries far, wide, rapidly and ON FIRE! ❤️‍🔥🕊️🙏🏼😎

As a lay person I believe the question is more about speaking in Tongues. It appears if one speaks in Tongues it is supposed to mean the disciples received the Language they needed to know in order to teach the Gospels. In a sense, I hate to have to call myself "Protestant", since I ONLY consider myself a disciple of Christ, discipled by such things as Watchman Nee sermons and continuing fellowship with the Father. I first encountered Catholic Charismatic Renewal in the early 80's when there was a rally here at Sacramento's Memorial Auditorium which I took a Catholic co-worker to (and the last I knew she was saying she no longer believed in God - her husband is a non-believer). After that, I picked up a few books, I gained from, by Sr. Ann Shields and have followed the movement since. But, isn't the question today "Where is TODAY's Vatican?" Though I can see the value to addressing FOUNDATIONS in Vatican II which, I expect, was rooted in GENUINE historical Catholicism? MY own goal is unity across the entire global Body of Christ, in the Cross and Resurrection and RETURN of Christ, leaving conflicts over other doctrines behind FOR that purpose. IF we agree on Christ and Trinity, CAN we avoid conflict and get about lifting up the Savior to the World, each in the way we are individually gifted to do? I have known very sincere Catholics who have been especially reluctant to have any engagement WITH Protestants. And I have ONE Catholic friend who has been special fellowship for me. I appreciate the comparatively rigorous practical theological discipline of Catholics in contrast with many of the Protestant denominations. But theology at that level has never been my interest. Meaning, I rarely am able to 'sit through' some complex, in greater depth discussions. But may God bless your efforts to be His servants more faithfully!

thank you so much for this video. I was very saddened to hear about attacks on the charismatic Renewal. I am a cradle catholic and was away from church for years. Very thankful I was gradually brought back by our Lord and now I would consider myself a more traditional catholic but I have experienced the Charismatic renewal and that was instrumental in my return. When I listen to those who are attacking they are very disingenuous. Of course there is discernment that takes place with this gift of tongues for instance ..but it was very deceptive the way it was spoken of in my opinion. Would I allow Dr Ralph Martin or Dr. Mary Healy just as an example...to pray over me ...of course! you are all so very humble and charitable in your response. Unlike the ones who are trying to discredit. It is very sad to see for sure. I used to listen to them regularly and now I am not. Anyone trying to divide the church even more is not worth my time.

Thank you for this balanced, Scriptural, and Magisterial defense of the Charismatic Renewal. Those who use isolated examples of immature or troubling behaviors to demonize the entire Charismatic Renewal make a weak argument. The use of short, out of context video clips to make a broad conclusion is also weak. Maybe just using that for click bait? I fell for it and watched that video. It was disturbing to hear such accusations, but not surprising given the prideful attitudes of our modern "pharisees". Again, thank you all for addressing this in a respectful and balanced manner. The Evil One is using Catholic people to ensnare and divide other Catholics. How can we read the Acts of the Apostles and consider that joyous and a real action of the Holy Spirit as not appropriate for our day? Catholics should stop being afraid that other movements are not of God. Who are they to decide? The Church has spoken on the Charismatic movement.

Thank you thank you! Had it not been for this movement of Grace, we would probably not have come back to the church let alone remain Catholic. In 1975 I came alive followed by my soon to be husband in 1977. This truly was an act of God we both had our own “illumination of conscience” down on our faces in repentance asking Gods forgiveness and asking Jesus to come into our lives in a deeper fuller way. We have not been the same since. Thank you Jesus for your Holy Spirit🔥❤️‍🔥🔥

I've been surprised by this recent pile-on of criticism and disdain by traditionalists of the Catholic charismatic renewal. What is driving that? It's not clear to me what the threat is. My husband is Protestant and I really benefit from accompanying him to his church. I love the fervent praise through music and the beautiful times of corporate prayer. I'm a faithful, active Catholic who has been blessed by opening my heart to the Lord wherever He is active.
Thanks for this clear and timely response.

Oh boy! Is your video discussion a breath of fresh air. Thank you ! 💗! so much for pointing out the correct discernment and in-depth discussion of the beauty of Charismatic renewal. Dr. Mary Healey's deep dive explanations are awesome. I did my Cursillo over a decade ago and was part of our charismatic praise and worship group at church and did Life in the Spirit training along side with quiet contemplative rosary groups. I also became a Contemplative 3rd Order Lay Carmelite with a vocation towards cloistered religious life. I have loved the reverence of both the TLM with contemplative, solitude and Gregorian chants and also the praise and worship healing masses. The ministry of deliverance in prayer after a charismatic mass is an incredible healing experience. I have been able to balance both in my life in keeping "Christo-centered". The evil one doesn't like Latin masses nor the clapping, singing and praising exalting Jesus. He does prowl like a lion wanting to devour souls into perdition. I live in France now where there is more of an acceptance of charismatic prayer groups within the few Catholic areas in this sadly secular country. Here so many more Catholic youths are now being drawn by the Holy Spirit to asking for Confirmations and Baptisms at our masses at the Cathedral and this is so encouraging to see this. My church friends and I attend daily mass and we find the supportive community spirit in our praise and worship I sadly see the division within the laity now and the hatred being spewed by the radtrad laity leaders on line in these videos all of a sudden. This to me is what feels demonic .I now see the division even from my friends back home which is shocking but should not be surprising. (OL of Akita and OL of Good Success prophesies coming true of clergy against each other from the top down and now attacking the faithful laity) and I choose not to get into this hateful division..not even to explore out of curiosity . There is also hateful spewing of approved saint writings around the Divine Will and Divine Mercy. I see the devil is getting desperate. and is cunning but running out of options. I trust Jesus in my discernment through the Holy Spirit. Again thankyou Renewed Ministries for your sane, balanced and comforting discernment with all the scriptural references in place..and please continue this discussion so needed. There is room for all of us at the Table of the Banquet of the Lord.Jesus in the end is Victorious. Triumphant Immaculate Heart of Mary Mother of God along with her spouse the Holy Spirit, send down your graces, love and protection and help unify your One Holy and Apostolic Catholic Church. As for us, stay in the Barque of Peter and keep your eye on the Prize by being faithful remnants.

Last week I saw a video on TH-cam in which the man said that the baptism in the Holy Spirit is not real. Poor man. I think he is just caught up in traditional pharisee ism. I experienced the baptism and the Holy Spirit in 1975 and I’m still going strong. Praise Jesus! Hallelujah! Oh, by the way, the gift of tones is absolutely real. My son spoken tongues to his iPhone, and it immediately translated it from Arabic. What he said was,” not my will, but they will be done.” I don’t think the iPhone was overcome with emotionalism. The gift of tongues is real.

In the early 70's, at the beginnings of the movement of the Holy Spirit who graced peoples lives, which was the beginning of the Charismatic Renewal, many Catholic priests ridiculed these graced people. The ridicule of these Catholic priests, not all of course, has continued to the present.
In the late 70's we were fortunate to have a Spanish priest in our parish who encouraged us to move from meeting in our homes to meeting the parish hall. His welcome allowed the charismatics in our small town to flourish. As time went by many in this movement went on to various parish ministries. There were a few from these groups who left the Catholic Church by espousing the erroneous and varied Protestant denominations. But overall most of the charismatics matured in the Catholic faith and bore much fruit.
My observation of the priests who over the years talked down to and about the charismatics, from the pulpit, have not and do not exhibit joy to their parishioners. May God open their eyes and bless them.
But, our Almighty God has abundantly blessed us over the years. For this we are most grateful. Blessed is His Holy Name! Blessed is He in His church. This post is by Abel, Vicki's husband.

Thank you for such a wonderfully enlightening discussion. I have lived half a century and only did the Life in the Spirit seminars in recent weeks. I have this yearning in me for a deep connection with the Holy Spirit. I feel like a bird flying on one wing, like I need more. Sometimes I chastise myself for being greedy or looking for this 'something more'. When Ralph prayed at the end I was overcome with yearning. Come Holy Spirit... I am in need of You.

I was a teenager during Vatican 2. I have told my son who is a liturgist that I could never go back to what it was like for me in the pre-Vatican 2 Church. He tells me that several people my age in his parish have told him that as well. For me, at least, it was legalistic and a ripe environment for scruples. In The Peasant of the Garonne by Jacques Maritan there is a chapter called "A Long Misunderstanding of Bitter 1:35:15 Fruit", in which he talks about how Jansenism had entered the Church. I got "spirit-filled" in 1974 and have been a member of a Catholic Charismatic Covenant Community for most of my adult life. I am very concerned for the young people who want a return those days.

I've come across a lot of questions about how the personal gift of tongues is initiated and sustained. Many are confused by what they consider methods of coaching people to do it, peer pressure, and "fake it till you make it." Also they don't understand why it is encouraged in group gatherings when it is not the prophetic gift requiring an interpretation. People are also confused by, and critics seize upon, examples of a person saying the same word or the same three syllables over and over again. Then they say it is silly, fake, or distracting, and/or produces a cacophony in group settings, etc.
I've tried to explain that the "prayer tongues" are not necessarily an instance of the Holy Spirit prompting a person right at that time to speak out in tongues in a powerful way as in many first experiences of the gift and/or the recurring prophetic gift, that it is a more subdued expression that the person themselves turns on and off, but it's drawn from the initial experience and being cultivated in private prayer. And doing it all at once in a group is a charismatic practice that arose in a charismatic culture as part of praise and worship. It's not necessarily that the Bible says do it this way. So I think it needs a better explanation for those looking in from the outside and also for those who have had exposure to the Renewal but this part of it did not go well for them.
Maybe more people who have experienced a true gift of tongues should speak about it online, not merely to respond to critics, but so that everyone can hear all the individual testimonies. They do differ, and those differences tell us a lot about how the gift is experienced across the board.

I don't understand why there is criticism against the Charismatic Renweal? We live in a critical world where everyone is pointing fingers at others; division in our country, and online where people argue with one another. God created us to be family. I was baptized in the Holy Spirit and it did awaken the Sacrament of Confirmation in me. I felt God's Love and peace so strongly! I have been slain in the Spirit numerous times when being prayed over. This is a great ministry of the church. I am now working for a parish and involved in Evangelization. I think more people should be open to the Holy Spirit and not the spirit of criticism. (which is from the enemy)
