    Oh yes! I relocated to Canada September last year (Toronto) and there were bidding wars on rental units. I missed out on so many apartments cause someone else offered higher than the listing rental price. In fact, my current landlord said someone offered him full year rent but he decided to go with me instead cause I wrote a compelling letter along with my application. God help us in this Canada.

      @@Flourish_today I had a job in Toronto and I had considered all factors before deciding to move there. It was more a question of housing availability than anything else in my case.

    Alot of my fellow immigrants in Canada should learn to live within their means. Rent minimally and don't take up unnecessary financing. Couples come and take two cars and start paying monthly vehicle payments plus insurance, living in townhouses when they are yet to get a job in Canada.

    This is the same issue in the US. We sold our home and built a new one. We put our home for sale on Friday. Saturday we scheduled a tour from 9 to 1pm. Over 50 people were waiting for the tour by 1pm that day the house was sold. Food prices are on another level. God have mercy!!!

    Inflation is real! The housing market is crazy! For us, we have an annual budget that we stick to it. We discuss what’s happening with the kids and ask them to cut down on waste. They’re great at it.

    • @MARINAESIRI
      @MARINAESIRI  ปีที่แล้ว

      Love this idea. What factors do you consider in creating the annual budget? And I am guessing you leave room for unforseen contingencies? I haven't tried a yearly budget yet. I have done monthly and quarterly. Thanks a lot for sharing.

    • @ejiroonobrakpor
      @ejiroonobrakpor ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We consider everything, from phone bills to eating out. We have pizza budgeted too😂. Just because we have it budgeted doesn’t mean we do it. We only do it when they ask, and because it is budgeted for, it is easy to say “you can have pizza”. This budgeting helps us save 50% of our family income. For electricity we budget $500 but average $400/monthly. We are very realistic about how we budget.

    On the groceries, I also had to empty out my freezer and write down everything I had so I don't overbuy and waste. I live alone o, but grocery bill is still crazy! I found that No Frills tends to be a lot cheaper even when I buy meats. Since I live alone, I can't do the meat sharing thing cause it will most likely waste but it's good for families.

    To repiy: I watch the CBC news alot and many provinces (not Saskatoon) are already stopping international students from coming into Canada unless they can prove they have a place to live. Some colleges say they have dome rooms available but the student did not apply for them. So I agree there seems to be a miscommunication somewhere. Perhaps you can tell incoming students where and how to make certain they have a place to live on your channel. Such as how to apply for a dome room or an apartment who to get in touch with. With agencies handles that information.

Good reflections and insights. Thanks for sharing, Marina. Now I know where I know you from! Saw you at Superstore on Confederation Drive a couple of weeks ago. We shall survive this craziness by wisdom and God's grace. Oh and I tell the kids, dish only what you can finish o! food can't go in the bin, lai lai. As I reflect on the housing crisis, might a policy on rental cost help? cos what I sense is that a lot of the "wealthy folks" mopped up housing units during the pandemic and now making a killing from it. I pay like 30k to the shipping guys
      I think it's 30k for 10kg so I try to buy a little more stuff to hit my 10kg
      Then when the stuff gets here, I pick them up at Ectobicoke they have their office there I pay $30 to pick up.
      I prefer it, at least for like a year plus I don't need to buy Egusi, ogbono, dry pepper..... because it's so expensive and packaged so small
      One needs to buy several bags to cook a pot of soup.
      No way, I ship from nija

    My friends daughter wrote a sweet letter to the home owner of the house she and her husband were looking to buy. People were selling their homes in Toronto and moving towards Kitchener Waterloo and offering above the asking price. My friend's daughter and her husband could not compete with these Torontarians, so she decided to put pen to paper. She explained why buying a house was important. (This was their first time buying) in her letter she talked about how they couldn't afford what others were offering. She went on and on. Guess what? The home owner sold the house to her. I was so happy to hear this story.

    This is serious. Alot now depends on the government. Since its a planned developed economy one would expect the government and ministers in charge of housing employment agriculture etc to manage the increasing crisis. Homeowners can't just take advantage of the surging increase in migrants. There should be control as this is what makes nations like Canada a delight for all. Also IRCC has a set number of new entrants earmarked each year...meaning home crisis should have been thought of if you plan to bring in thousands each year. My 2cents ooo...It is well.

    • @MARINAESIRI
      @MARINAESIRI  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds like common sense to me. The IRCC projections is for the next 3 to 5 years. So what is the surprise? I am not sure why international students jave to sleep on the streets for something to eb done. In some provinces, some houses have rent control but it only applies to houses built before certain times. So newer houses have fewer controls. Still a sad situation.

    Do you think they should stop bringing in newcomings in to Canada for a while. In some provinces they have stopped allowing colleges from accepting new international students unless the colleges have housing for them. Because they found students sleeping on the slreet or many students sharing a one bedroom apartment. Why keep allowing new people to come when you have no place to house them?

    • @MARINAESIRI
      @MARINAESIRI  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Economic migration is a huge source of revenue to the government. The foreign trained professionals pay to come here. International students pay about times three the cost of domestic tuition so it is a revenue source. But it looks like there is a major misalignment between the IRCC projections and other ministries involved in housing, social services, job creation, etc. That bridge needs to be fixed first before things will be easier. I don't see Canada stopping bringing in people but they may slow it down.

      @@MARINAESIRIThe issue with this level of open migration is that it's causing an explosion of demand for food and housing. Rents in London have shut up 27% in the last 24 months. • @saxywale2
      @saxywale2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The way it works in most places, developers won't sell to individuals. They will sell to home builders, who in turn would now sell and build for you. This is often done for architectural controls. However, you may be able to buy a land and build yourself in a rural municipality.

    • @MARINAESIRI
      @MARINAESIRI  ปีที่แล้ว

      You can only buy lands outside city lines in acreages and build yourself or in rural communities. They hardly sell lands to individuals to hold and build when they like within the city.

I would rather put my eggs on USA because USA has much more livable cities, many many jobs, you can work without papers in sanctuary states, and the healthcare is expensive but atleast you will see a doctor in a day or so whereas in Canada I have a friend who was given a doctor's appointment earliest December imagine! A whole 3 months wait. The amount of school fees international students pay it is not fair for them to deal with such situations. My advice look to going to USA or Mexico then japa to the USA it is easier and cheaper to get into Mexico.

Just stay in your own country, build up some wealth and then move to a nicer country. I hope some newer immigrants realize this and retreat back to there home land. The USA is not going to be any easier.
