    Paul thorburns kick has got to be the best of all time from that distance with the old heavy leather balls is amazing

      I’ve heard a lot of people saying that the heaviness of the leather ball helped the ball because of the weather and with today’s lighter balls it would be almost impossible.

    Paul Thorburns kick was the best seeing as it was with a leather ball and it was using a bit of mud and not the modern tee's the players have nowadays. Unbelievable.

      soccerball is heavier than a rugby ball, and i can cover that distance twice easily
      you see the difference. u actually dont kickn at full force in modern rugby balls, its actually easier with heavier balls
      think throwing a feather versus a stone

  • @neilhunter8262

    Clearly fantastic kicks all. Steyn was a hell of a kicker. However, Paul Thorburn, kicking a pig's bladder in the days you were lucky if they removed the pig, off mud and turf raised with his heel, at sea level on a wet Cardiff day at the old Arms Park, was something that stands out.

    saves the very "best" until last. we all know that is "THE GREATEST" Rugby union kick of all time by a clear mile. that was the old leather ball and was often a lot heavier when wet! no tee either....as he said...THAT WAS A "MONSTER"
    Obviously from a very proud welshman!

    • @CS-yr5hs
      @CS-yr5hs 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Much easier with the leather ball as there would be almost no movement, would be 10x harder in they conditions with a one of today’s very lightweight balls

    • @keithdontsweat8093
      @keithdontsweat8093 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CS-yr5hs ... BS... Think throwing a feather Vs stone. Leather ball less prone to elements e.g wind and the mass of it means it can travel longer distance with little or no hindrance from the elements. A Modern rugby ball is much lighter and won't travel as much and is more prone the elements. Give Steyn that leather ball and see what he does.

    De Wet Ras of the Free State succeeded with a penalty kick from between his own ten yard line and his 22 at an angle, at Loftus against Northern Transvaal in 1976's Currie Cup competition. I don't know if video footage of this kick still remains. Ian McCallum, kicking with his toe with the assistance of the wind, landed a penalty for the the Springboks against the All Blacks in the fourth test at Ellispark in 1970 from his own ten yard line, at more or less the same angle than Paul Thorburn's monster. Ras's kick may be further than McCallum's and Thorburn's attempts. Thorburn's kick, however, was not at altitude.

    Place kicks off a holder are better for accuracy and travel at straighter angles, but Drop - kicks that hit off the ground go the highest and the furthest of all kicks because they get rikishay effects and they are taken by the wind more.
