Poitrenaud took a lot of piss for Howley's try but i always thought he didn't play it really bad, it's just the kicking was good and unfortunately the ball slowed down in the very last centimeters, one couldn't predict that. Poitrenaud was just put in an awful situation.

How is the first (Waratahs vs Reds) a "mistake"? The kick into the Red's half was a reasonable play -- even the commentator said "That's a good kick". I’ve watched many rugby highlights but being from the US I don’t understand the game fully. So why can’t the defense touch the ball after the other team kicked it towards them? Seems like a live ball to me but I guess I’m missing something
Well they touch the ball because they want to catch the ball before it goes into touch, then kick it or run it back. If it goes into touch after their opponent kicks it (has to be bounce first unless its from a penalty), while it's a lineout for them, it's still pretty close to the try line which is one turnover from being a try. If it's a kick from a penalty, then the kicking team gets the lineout. A top-tier team should be kicking it straight into touch in this case but if it's allowed to bounce then the opposition can recover it which is considered a fuck-up from the kicker. In these clips, they're not properly catching it or worse, touching it before it goes out, meaning their opponent gets the line out or scrum right next to the try line after kicking down the pitch, giving them an almost guaranteed try scoring opportunity basically for free.
