    Shout out to Tommy Gibbons, an often forgotten but all-time great light heavyweight who also managed to beat Harry Greb. He held in there, with the occasional good movement and survived, one of very few to survive a full 15 from Jack
    As for Jack himself, his first round knockout percentage (RO1 KOs making up 51% of his victories) remains unbeaten by any champion of any division in boxing history. Man was a legend.

      @eac1235 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Watch the complete show . It was clearly stated he was more popular than Ali. Most people including blacks in the 60s disliked Ali. It wasn't until the mid 70s after the press kept harping about how great Ali was. I had many older relatives that remembered Dempseys hey day and told me and my cousins about how he was revered. Truthfully its always been the loud minority that supported Ali. My Dad went to 3 Ali fights and he told me 2 out of every 3 people were cheering against Ali. Please understand I love Ali but so much of the mystique was media created remember Howard Cosell? Dempsey never had tv and 24 hour sports coverage.

    • @LilKLicky
      @LilKLicky 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@eac1235 Listen, why do you have to go through this whole analogy on how Jack Dempsey was "more popular" than Muhammad Ali???? What you said about Ali being despised in the 1960s and loved in the 1970s is 100% accurate. But it's TOTALLY IRRELEVANT when it comes to popularity and his rightful place among the greatest boxers of all-time my friend. If you go from the roaring 1920s to the 1980s and beyond, do you ever hear "The Mannasa Mauler's" name in the same discussion with Ali, Louis, Marciano, Tyson, and even the boxers from the lighter weight divisions such as Archie Moore, Sugar Ray Robinson, Jake LaMotta, and Henry Armstrong as far as being popular and one of boxing's all-time greats go???? In today's society, people who have never even seen "The Mannasa Mauler" box in films are going to say the names I just mentioned in the last sentence because the majority of them are not even aware of the fact some technology existed back in Dempsey's time let alone great fighters (athletes in general). But if you have heard Dempsey's name being mentioned in other people's conversations as far as being one of the most popular and greatest fighters of all-time goes, then what planet are those people from because I need to go there and hear their conversations in their entirety 🤣😂🤣😂!!!! Of course I wasn't even born (and I'm pretty sure you weren't either 🤣😂🤣😂!!!!) when Dempsey was boxing. But I've seen plenty of films of him in action and he was indeed a tremendous fighter. Believe it or not, he's one of my favorite boxers of all-time and it's totally mind boggling his name is hardly ever mentioned as one of the most popular and greatest fighters of all-time.

    • @eac1235
      @eac1235 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@LilKLicky Actually Dempsey was ranked the greatest fighter of the first 50 years of the 20th century. Even Ali himself made it a point to go to Dempseys restaurant in NYC. Yes I have heard Dempseys name mentioned in all greatest heavyweight conversations. Trying to tell me that people talk more about Marciano or Moore is just not realistic. Also who the hell do you think Tyson molded himself after ??? Bruce Lee in his book talks about punching like Dempsey etc etc. So he must have been well known and very much talked about. Even Ali made it a point to hang out a few times with Dempsey. Talking about me going with a analogy you wrote a novella for craps sake! Lol.Have a good night.

    • @LilKLicky
      @LilKLicky 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@eac1235 Like I said earlier my friend, what planet do those individuals live on who mentioned Dempsey's name as one of the most popular and greatest fighters of all-time 🤣😂🤣😂!!!! Me write a novel???? I would NEVER do such a thing 🤣😂🤣😂!!!! You just making this analogy on how he was the best boxer during the first half of the 20th Century along with how Muhammad Ali wanted to hang out with him and who Mike Tyson emulated during his time in the ring. In essence, you made this discussion way more serious than it really is, not me. In reality, I don't even see why we're having this "disagreement" concerning "The Mannasa Mauler" because we both agree Jack Dempsey is indeed one of the best fighters in boxing history. Oh yeah, it's his popularity we're having a "disagreement" on right???? 😂🤣😂🤣!!!! My point is is he popular among the majority of people who were born in the late 20th, early 21st Century and aren't even aware of his great accomplishments in the ring and undeniable legacy in not just boxing history, but in sports history as well!!!!

      Yeah, I've always felt the narrative of Dempsey as "undersized" was a bit ridiculous. Sure, he was much smaller than Willard, but Willard was a freak for that era. Most HWs of that time were roughly Dempseys size. Unfortunately a lot of Dempseys career has been mytholicized in some really unnecessary ways. Definitely an ATG tho.

    i got NEWS FOR EVERYBODY - in dempsey's prime, he was better than any other heavy weight who ever was - that includes marciano who i love and believe was 49 -0 (and underrated) - joe louis mike tyson!!! etc..... amongst all his other worldly tools - his refined technique which to almost everyone's shock included some 340 some odd pages of practical working technique - which he kept as a journal and kept writing thru all the towns he traveled thru - and learned from the best' he thru out what didn't work and wrote down what did work, he wrote not one but 2 books on boxing and self defense... - the anomaly of this dynamic is that his style looked like a street fighting brawler - but was in fact so technical it's mind blowing - so he took all this knowledge = and had it all in his prime - and nobody could touch him!! how else can you explain dropping firpo - 7 times in the 1st round 9 times in all - jesse Willard 7 times in the 1st round and retired him rounds later!!! of course the great tunney beat him after studying him for years!!!!! while dempsey hardly knew who he was.....and then finally they meet after dempsey had a 3 yr layoff - NO SHIT tunney ended up beating him - and the 2nd time tunney almost got - GOT anyway LOL.. anyone who really understands this stuff knows what i'm saying is probably the case .

    Was Dempsey using plaster wraps in the Willard fight? I've watched boxing for years and never heard of anyone doing that type of damage in the first two rounds. I'm not questioning his talent -- and if Dempsey did it cleanly, that's impressive -- but I find it hard to believe.

    • @SilverSkitterscuttle
      @SilverSkitterscuttle 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No he was not. Firstly, the damage Willard suffered has also been exaggerated. Willard always believed Dempsey cheated, but there is no real evidence of this if you examine all of the arguments.

      @@SilverSkitterscuttle exactly. The guy who gave the famously brutal injury report to the press a) had no access to Willard after the fight and b) wasn't even a doctor. Anyone with any first hand knowledge of Willards condition after the fight said that outside some pretty bad bruising and swelling, he was pretty much fine. Willard was even quoted as saying it was no worse than anything he'd done to other fighters he'd faced before.

    A great boxer I agree! But a gentleman.... maybe. Once he won the world title, he played the race card and refused to face black opponents. This was due in part to Jack Johnson's reign as champ a couple years earlier because of all the trouble he attracted purely from being coloured and the fact America, or at least the American Boxing scene, was still at that time totally against black champions. Did Dempsey play the race card to appease the public or cause he was racist?.... Still a legend

    How could this be the golden age of sports when African Americans weren't even allowed to compete in boxing fully, baseball or football fully....even Jackie Robinson played in a segregated football and baseball league (Honolulu Bears and Kansas City Monarchs).

      Dude - the current heavyweight division is a joke. The best athletes in the world play NBA or NFL because it pays much better money. Jack Dempsey was champ when boxing was THE BIGGEST sport in the world. He would tear apart all the heavyweights today despite only weighing 88kilos!!!!

      You fuckin fool. Both Washington and the promoters of the day didn't want a black man as champion after Jack Johnson. Even twenty years after Johnson lost the title, promoters advised Joe Louis to act in a humble manner because of the fallout of the bold, in your face arrogance of Jack Johnson. The best black heavyweight of the twenties was Harry Wills - Big, slow, awkward and tailor made for Jack Dempsey. Dempsey would have done to Wills what he did to Jess Willard.

    • @jasonkessler7321
      @jasonkessler7321 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your right but the thing about him was his style. Prior to this for the most part Boxing was still more of a gentlemen sport where they just stood at a distance not engaging in the way that Dempsey did which in my opinion is one of the reasons why the fights where so long. Dempsey went in there and just tried killing people and nobody had seen that style of fighting which was why he was a huge draw, and one could argue that he was the first modern pop culture in America. Sometimes the first guy over the course of time might not eventually be the best and get overshadowed by those who follow him. Your right I don't think he would do well against modern Heavyweights but they all eventually fall to somebody else. And if you watch some of his fights you can see where Mike Tyson gets his influence from him especially after the fights how he would be quick to go over to the fallen opponent after the fight, Tyson is totally imitating Dempsey when he did that especially early in his career.
