Why Cats Stretch When They See You?

  • In this video, we’ll explore the science behind cat stretching and explain the reasons why cats stretch when they see their humans.
    To greet you
More often than not, cats stretch as a way of greeting you and saying Hello. The stretch is a sign of trust. It’s your cat’s way of telling you that they feel comfortable in your presence. Your cat feels so safe and at ease with you that they are not afraid to stretch and be vulnerable.
    To seek attention
One of the main reasons why cats stretch when you are around is to get your attention.
Cats are intelligent animals. They know that if they do something cute, there's a good chance they'll receive something in return, like some pets, treats or just a bit of your focus.
Stretching serves as their way of saying, “Hey, Look at me. I am here. See how cute I am.”
    To Prepare for Activities
Another reason why cats stretch is to get their body in motion. Like humans, cats need to stretch to warm up their muscles after sleeping or resting.
When your cat sees you, it's likely that they've just woken up from a nap and they are stretching to become active and ready for whatever comes next.
    To Mark Their Territory:
Cats also stretch to mark their territory by leaving pheromone markings, so other cats know they live there.
In the same way the cats will love to rub against their owners and mark to claim them, scent marking via stretching is often done in an effort to claim various portions of the home.
    To Cool Down
Another reason why cats stretch is to cool down. When the weather gets hot, cats often find a spot on cool pavement or grass, stretching out all four limbs.
    Why cats make bird noises
Cats are known for their fast and intense teeth chattering, or as some will call it bird noises.
This chattering is often observed when a cat spots a bird or rodent outside of a window.
Cat behaviorists believe that cats chatter in a response to the excitement of seeing their hunt, and the frustration of not being able to catch it. This chattering could be your cat's way of communicating their excitement, frustration, or aggression towards their prey.
    Eating Non-Food Items
Does your cat regularly try to chew on non-edible items such as plastic, cloth, sweaters, bags, or electrical cords? This could be a sign of a rare condition in cats called pica.
Some proposed reasons include mineral deficiencies, hyperthyroidism, genetics, boredom, and stress.
    Licking After They Bite
Have you ever experienced your cat giving you a bite, only to be followed by a curious licking session?
If your cat licks then bites you out of the blue, then you might be in the presence of a love bite. Cats often bite to show affection. But only with gentle and more controlled nibbles.
But remember, if you are actively petting your cat and they give your finger a lick or two, and then a nice chomp, it might be that they have had enough of your pets and are overstimulated.
    Why do cats lick you?
Licking is often a form of grooming and expressing affection. By licking you, they're marking you with their scent, which is a way of claiming you as their own.
Why cats show their bellies when they see you
When a cat shows you their belly, it means the cat is relaxed, comfortable, and doesn't feel threatened. They feel safe enough to expose their vulnerable areas without worrying about being attacked. it is a sign that your cat fully trusts you and feel safe with you.
Cats also expose their bellies as a way of saying hello to you. They are happy to see you and hope to get some attention, treats or pets.
    Why cats ignore you
Your cat is sitting across the room, you look over to them, and you call their name and nothing happens. Your feelings get hurt and you wonder, does my cat even recognize my voice at all? A study conducted at the University of Tokyo found that cats can recognize their owners’ voices. What’s more, cats can recognize their names-even when it is called by a stranger. Some felines will twitch their ears or tilt their head when they hear their name being called.
However, the study also found that only about 10 percent of those cats come when called. Cats do know your voice and their names but they don’t always feel the need to offer a response.
Unlike dogs, who generally want to be involved in every situation and activity and often follow their human around constantly, cats are more independent.

There’s no such thing as cats vs. dogs ones a pet the other is man’s best friend and has guided us to victory since our caveman days. Dogs work in law enforcement, military, search and rescue, fire rescue. Nothing wrong with liking cats but there is no comparison in utility and loyalty.

Cute name 😊. I have two boys, Minós and Alexi (Minós Apollo & Alexi Irmes, named after Ancient Greek/Cretan rulers and mythological gods that are linked to their colouring. They had a little baby sister, Artemisia "Arty" Nyx, but she crossed the 🌈 rainbow bridge way too early 😢).
While my eyes certainly can see - and I'm well aware - they're cats, what I truly see when I look at them are two souls, two persons/personalities. I love them as if they were my kids. They're my family. They've taught me a lot - about unconditional love, about letting go, about enjoying the moment, et cetera. They make me laugh out loud, or at least smile on the daily, come cuddle extra when I'm feeling sad or in pain. Minós is particularly sensitive to my moods, energy level and pain levels (I'm seriously chronically ill), and has helped me regulate breathing, sleeping better, and all that.
They're the type of cats to want to be in the toilet or shower with me, lol 😅 (shower just outside the water spray though). Following me around is general practice here, and when I return home from sth, I'm always being greeted by two happy boys. The cute stretching - I love it when it's with their front paws, one by one - is absolutely part of that, as well as showing bellies, bunting, purring... you name it. They've given me more than I can ever repay, but I try to do my utmost best to care & show them every single day I love them dearly.
Awww... while I was writing that last sentence, sitting up in bed yogi style (crossed legs) Minós jumped on the bed and made himself comfy in said crossed legs, directly on his back, toebeans in the air, purring up a storm ❤. He's the snugglebum of the two, but Alexi has a steady appointment at 4.30AM (yeah, I wish he'd chosen another time, too 😒🤷‍♀️) where he curls up next to me, usually at my head or middle and expects ALL the scritches 😂. He can definitely be a mommy's boy, but it's like he wants those moments to be just got the two of us. Like when I'm watching sth on my tablet - Minós not with me - and he lays his front paws and head on my legs, or peeks out from under my armpit to watch with me. Or when I wake up at night and feel a cold nose and whiskers pressed to my face, an indication he's checking up on me... and yeah, also wants a kiss before moving on. Absolutely adorable. In the past, I wished he would sleep with me on the bed as well, like his brother. But I realised soon enough his moments of love are extra special - and they're definitely there. He's just different in character. Besides, as soon as temperatures drop, he often sleeps in an elevated basket directly next to my bed - quite regularly touching one paw to my mattress as well. So it's not as if he's not seeking me out.
I hope you have many similar wonderful, loving moments with Sparkie ❤.

The thing I love most about having a cat is making a relationship, where we both make allowances for each other, and two creatures that are so different can create a bond of affection. It's not a case of a human simply forcing their will on another animal - hope that makes sense!😄

Is it something in their food... or is it LOVE... Curious!

My cat rolls on her back when she wants attention, and is one of the few cats I've ever had that actively welcomes belly rubs. Instead of biting when she's had enough, she'll usually gently kick my hand off her belly with her back paws. Never uses her claws, it's more of a "I'm done with it for now" kind of kick. My cat also comes when she's called, but only by me. My wife has tried for weeks to get her to come when called, but she will only come to her she calls her and there's food being prepared for her. My cat also understands the gist of what I tell her. By using visual cues and easy words, she gets most of what I say and usually does it. Like when she was tearing up my blinds because she's only 1 year old, I told her to leave it alone, showed her by holding the blinds, and she never touched the blinds again. I also taught her to be easier with her claws, just by holding my hand and simply saying "Ouch" as if in pain whenever she brought them out when she gets excited from petting, even if it didn't really hurt that much. So now she just pushes my hand away with one of her paws when she's had enough. Considering I got her as a tiny thing that was starving and dehydrated from the intense summers of the Southeast U.S., she's pretty smart and attentive. I think she has a really strong imprint as I am the guy that took her from near-death and gave her a second chance at life.

The stress and boredom from this is the only reason the vet thinks he has pica. The items he goes for are all things you'd normally find in a bathroom, or are very similar to them.

His body length would easily Double doing that and it give everyone a funny visual while at it.

There's an element of truth to these assertions, but the reality is; cat's are smart. If you are an out of shape, overweight person, like myself, a cat will likely display the most acrobatic moves in it's arsenal when it see's you. Afterwards the cat's stretches out in total mockery of it's owners physical limitations. Some cat's have been known to stand up on both legs, for hours on end, if their owner is confined to a wheelchair. Other cat's just shoot into a wall, unexpectedly, if it's owner is blind - with a walking stick. I don't have a cat at this moment, but I have three dog's! They go outside to poo poo/ pee pee, and are very well house-broken. I have been constipated for a week now, and just this morning my Pepper took a big dump right in front of the toilet. Pepper is a big girl, and sometimes we call her, "Tank", but now the joke is on me as I had to adjust the ballcock in the toilet TANK to get her big turds flushed all the way down!
