1. Could you introduce the situation of the Hamas-Fatah meeting in Beijing recently?
At the invitation of the Chinese side, representatives of the Palestinian National Liberation Movement and the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement recently came to Beijing to have an in-depth and candid dialogue on promoting Palestinian reconciliation. The two sides fully expressed their political will to realize reconciliation through dialogue and consultation, had discussions on many specific issues and made encouraging progress. They agreed to continue this dialogue process so as to achieve Palestinian solidarity and unity at an early date. They highly appreciated China's firm support for the just cause of the Palestinian people in restoring their legitimate national rights, thanked the Chinese side for its efforts to help strengthen Palestinian internal unity and reached an agreement on ideas for future dialogue.
2. We noted that the China Wildlife Conservation Associate announced that China would send two giant pandas to the San Diego Zoo. Could you share more details?
According to the cooperation agreement on the Giant Panda Conservation and Research signed by China and the US this February, the two giant pandas, Yun Chuan and Xin Bao from China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, have been selected to be sent to the San Diego Zoo. Experts from both countries have conducted multiple field assessments and will make full preparations in accordance with the requirements and technical standards for cooperation on giant panda conservation to ensure the health and safety of the giant pandas.
The San Diego Zoo is the first U.S. institution to carry out cooperation on giant panda research with China. Since the cooperation began, the two sides have carried out joint research on the conservation of wild giant pandas and feeding and breeding, disease prevention and treatment of giant pandas. Together, they have overcome technical difficulties and successfully bred six cubs through six pregnancies, playing a positive role in improving the conservation of giant pandas, forging closer bonds and enhancing friendship between the two peoples.
This cooperation will focus on major disease prevention and treatment, habitat and wild populations protection of giant pandas, which will help with the building of giant panda national parks in China. I believe the in-depth cooperation on giant panda protection and research will enhance the capacity for cooperation and research on endangered wildlife and biodiversity conservation, making an active contribution to protecting endangered wildlife and promoting the friendship between the Chinese and US people.
3. Reports say the Chinese coast guard expelled the Philippine vessels that they claimed intruded into Chinese waters of the Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea. Could you give us more information?
The Huangyan Island (known as Scarborough Shoal in English) is China's inherent territory. The Philippine coast guard ships and public service ships have intruded into the waters of Huangyan Island without the permission of China. This seriously violates China's sovereignty. The Chinese coastguard has taken necessary measures to drive them away in accordance with the law. China urges the Philippines to immediately stop infringements and provocation and not challenge China's strong determination to safeguard sovereignty.
