I own both the tobii and track IR. If you absolutely don't want to wear a hat (to clip track IR on) then this is about your only decent option. If however lag and absolute precision tracking is important to you, then track IR is still the king. In short, I brought the tobii to work to use as a windows hello login.. Couldn't stand the tracking lag compared to track IR which is instant and perfect every time. Not only does tobii have a noticable lag, but its not perfect in tracking. Looking in the same spot every time will yield different results which means you will never develop good muscle memory when looking at instruments in aircraft for example, or have to tilt your head further down than you want to to see instruments which makes you have to look up too far with your eyes. Turning up the sensitivity of the tobii can prevent this but then introduces unwanted movements. Tobii pushes tons of sponsorships for these type of reviews and although I'm not calling into question this specific reviewer, anyone who has used both systems seriously and is into flight or space simulations and still recommends the tobii is suspect IMO. Many who are new to the flight sim hobby (last 5-10 years is new IMO) think tobii is a game changer without ever having used track IR themselves.

@ceciliacole5098 in 2D tracking, Track IR is king of precision and input lag, period. The only reason I don't use track IR anymore is because I've gone full VR with lighthouse tracking. Track IR is the same system as lighthouse tracking.

I've had it for about six months. I don't use the eye track but I suppose if you could master it you could use it. Basically you have to learn how to use your head (or your eyes) as a game controller and like any new controller, once you learn how it becomes second nature but this one frees your hands to do other things so it's absolutely worth it, just don't expect it to happen right out of the box, you have to learn how to use it. The whole muscle memory thing like playing an instrument.

It's a neat device and well-made device, but the problem I always had with it was the existence of far cheaper alternatives. If all you need is head tracking, the value proposition just isn't there, IMO. The major advantage seems to be that you don't need the extra physical gear on your head (reflectors, LEDs, etc.) as with IR point trackers like Track IR. I can't imagine spending 4x more for the extra bit of convenience.

I have a large triple screen setup for MSFS and also have TrakIR which works great. I did however buy a lightly used Tobii as I wanted to ditch the hat clip. I spend 90 minutes trying to get the Tobii to be recognized in MSFS and track my head on the center screen. It kept defaulting to the left screen or not being recognized at all in MSFS. This despite several reinstallations of the software, using the base software and the new alpha software for better location setup of the tracker. And I had fully uninstalled the trak ir first as that can conflict with the Tobii. It’s a $200 paper weight now for me and I’ve sent them a support ticket. I have to say that the trak ir worked the first time and every time with 0 problems and more adjustability in the software and less lag too in tracking. I will maybe try the Tobii again when I have the interest to mess with the setup but multiple monitors confuse the software and I’ve seen posts on MSFS forum saying the same thing. I love the idea of head tracking without the infrared clip but for me it was a mess and at $300 new it should not have been that hard for it to work with multiple monitor setups which are not a new thing.

how do you get eyetracking to work with this setup? it should not work an screens bigger then 30" - youtube and search-machines are full with people with 48" screen where it does not work at all because the tobii-software centers the max 30" to your bigger tv so you can not reach the border of your bigger tv - so the picture will not move a bit 😞 or do you just use headtracking?

Could be to do with the distance I sit from the screen but I haven't had any issues. The closer to the screen you sit the more angle can be introduced, so maybe that's a factor.

I agree the eye tracking is mostly a gimmick.
However, some games seem to have useful eye tracking integration, like Star Citizen does where you can aim your target locking and even missile locking crosshairs with it instead of with your nose.

I like your reviews EXCEPT that you are using MSFS20, which just isn't very realistic for me. While the ground and some cities do look better, the flight physics and movement dynamics are horrible and not not realistic at all. I'm a real world pilot, and I ONLY fly the types of aircraft in the sim that I fly in real life. For example, I might do a flight from time to time of a particular aircraft that I've never flown, but they are the same TYPE of aircraft (GA) that I fly, and NOT airliner's, helicopter's or other jets. I have no interests in flying things that I probably will never fly in real life. The experience is ten times better when you fly the same things on the sim that you actually fly. And MSFS20 is too cartoonish, and has terrible flight physics. XP12, on the other hand has spectacular flight physics and dynamics, and still gives a great graphics show as well. Is it as good with clouds and terrain as MSFS, no. But the actual flying is ten times more important than buildings or trees looking more realistic. I have both of the sims, but rarely ever fly MSFS.
This device looks a lot like the TrackIR of the past. The TrackIR works pretty well from what I've seen, but a few things you have to do to make sure of it. I'm not sure how this compares, but most of the comments seem to think it has a larger lag compared to the TrackIR, and is more than four times the price. I have to say that after finding out that this costs almost $300 dollars USD, I would NEVER buy it, when the TrackIR works better, and for a lot less. The smart play seems to wait just a bit longer on VR to improve by leaps and bounds with AI. Cheers!
