Cattle Decapitation are a band that age like fine wine. They just keep getting better and better every album. Since Monolith, they've released nothing but masterpieces. They've claimed their place among the greatest metal bands of all time.
My favorite of theirs is probably Anthropocene (well, until I get to hear Terrasite)

This is a band that I really like but unfortunately cannot get into as much as others. They have lots of awesome things that I love about them, yet the jumbled nature of their songwriting can make hearing a full album from them, including stuff like Monolith of Inhumanity, a bit of a chore to get through for me personally. However, I am loving the singles for Terrasite, so I hope that the upcoming album helps me to love them haha

And yeah that’s how I got into Cattle Decap lmao
S: The Anthropocene Extinction, Monolith of InHumanity, The Harvest Floor

  • @TERMINATOR-0002
    @TERMINATOR-0002 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Just re-posting what I said on a terrasite album upload. yeah someone actually uploaded the whole album on YT
Well, this is my album of the year for me hands down no contest. it's no surprise to me honestly it's cattle decapitation for fuck sake. Ever since that Huge shift from the Harvest floor to the absolute death metal masterpiece that is monolith of inhumanity, this band has just been a decade-long streek-like monolith of inhumanity, the Anthropocene extinction, Death Atlas, and now Terrasite.
From the lyrics to the musicianship to the production everything they have made after the harvest floor has been nothing but perfection in my eyes.
Also, one thing can't really shut up about is how all these years, Travis fuckin Ryan hasn't aged a damn bit man he is every bit as brutal and furious with his melodic and goblin-like vocals and the dude is close to fucking 50 years old Not to mention he despite his hate for deathcore has inspired so many death metal vocalists under his name it's insane man like vocalists like dickie alen of infant annihilator and will Ramos of Lorna shore to name a couple of examples.
Anything in the death metal scene right now at the moment as far as I'm concerned is nothing compared to terrasite in terms of brutality, sheer fury, and over all greatness in my opinion.
album of the year for me no contest man LONG LIVE CATTLE DECAPITATION.

  • @LaylaLover90

HUMANURE: When it comes their earlier albums, this could easily be considered their best record. I think it blended their now past death-grind sound with a mostly sinister death metal sound, but does it really well. Vocally and lyrically one of their best albums in my opinion; up their and probably tied for me for first place with 'Monolith of Inhumanity'. I think their guitarist Josh is really starting to find his footing and writing those iconic riffs that you will continue to see much later on (in the Dave Otero Producer 'era' of Cattle). For me, a 9.5 out of 10)

Anthropocene was everything I wanted Cattle to sound like after I heard Monolith back in 2012. As much as I loved Monolith, TAE just upped the ante. Songwriting got better, the mix was absolutely perfect for the vibe of the album. Death Atlas couldn't live up to the bar set by TAE, which is completely fine. Terrasite on the other hand is giving me hard TAE vibes and actually might end up being my favourite out of all of their discography. That's absolutely crazy to think about from a band who's been going strong for nearly 3 decades.

Got into Cattle through a playlist of Ben Duerr (Shadow of Intent).
Was really surprised when I heard it the first time and was blown away. Started to listen to Death Atlas, Extinction, Monolith. Then it took me some time to listen to Karma and Harvest Floor. And well right now the only albums that are left are their first 4, probably because I don't like the production and the sounds. (Obviously I'm used to their 'good' quality stuff).
But what I'm trying to say, I love their sound, Travis vocals are just nuts and also McGraw is now one of my favorite drummers.
And I love the topics they talk or write about.

To me, Monolith is a total masterpiece, however, Monolith Of Inhumanity would not have been the best balanced piece of art of Metal from Cattle if The Harvest Floor or Karma, Bloody, Karma would have not existed. In Songs like Alone At The Landfill, Of Pride and Flatulence, The Product Alive, The Ripe Beneath The Rind, Regret And The Grave, etc. Travis has done Clean/raspy Harmonic vocals on them that we still hear and perceive crystal clear.

I've only heard Monolith of Inhumanity, The Anthropocene Extinction, and Death Atlas, and I'd rank them backwards chronologically (DA first, then TAE, then MOI). I think the only reason MOI is so low for me is that I just don't like grind and it has a lot of grind influences (better done than any other band but still not my thing) and so yeah. Death Atlas is amazing. Love it, especially the title track. Amazing shit.

TO SERVE MAN: Man, To Serve Man COULD have been such a great album. I think Travis had some peak, sick vocals on it, and that bass was SOOO crunchy and awesome. It suffers from some same-sounding intro/outros to each song and the drumming was pretty much the worst drumming on any of their albums. I am not sure what happened with Dave on this record; maybe this was the reason he was replace by Mike after this record. Although, that guitar tone on this album was super unique; not really seen on any other record. It has a weird reverby sound to it that I thought was kinds different and cool.

  • @noodle845

Monolith was the first one i heard. I wasnt into extreme meta at that point, so it was a challenge. But there was something intrigiuing and about it that made me want to keep going back. The snippets of melody among the carnage made those bits more memorable, while those blasts are trying to rip your head off! Their best album for me, but not their most accessible. Id recommend The newer stuff for a newbie if theyre unfamiliar with the genre

  • @mfkrwill
    @mfkrwill ปีที่แล้ว

Maaan id probably argue that Monolith, Anthro, and Death atlas are perfect. All 3 have stellar openers and closers (with Death Atlas having that foreboding and crushing despair to it). Ave Exitium is such a good intro to Pacific Grim, and Tyrants is just a fullbore punch you in the throat track.
And ultimately I think Terrasite was a decent to good record, but I almost feel like Cattle should find another engineer for the next release. As much as i love Dave Otero, i do think Terrasite is on the cusp of being samey.
But also, Cattle doing Monolith/Anthro/Atlas again certainly cant release a truly bad album so maybe i should just shut up 😅

Cattle Decapitation is Badass. I feel that they deserve to be up there with Cannibal Corpse due to their sound. Absolutely loved this video bc I like watching your vids & tbh I agreed with your opinion with every album here tbh. The older they get, their older music just feels like stepping stones to lead to their magnum opus Monolith Of Inhumanity, as that album is flat out mental, then after this they stay consistent with this sound & Keep making badass music ever since. Also, never played a monolith of inhumanity while playing Dead space... That's something I'll defs have to do someday lol.

I have been a fan since 2005 and for the first few years, all I had were Human Jerky through Humanure. They are some GREAT records. To this day, I own the most copies of Human Jerky (original cd and lp pressing, 2 picture discs, remastered cd and lp, and 6 copies of the remastered album on cassette, between their yellow and red shells. Lots of them are signed as well). Anyone new to the band PLEASE consider going back to these albums. It is really worth a listen!!

Damn I feel old. I first heard these dudes in 2004 when I picked up Humanure at a local CD store. And the reason why To Serve Man was so weird is because Gabe left and Josh Elmore came in. They kinda didn't know where to go. Humanure was when they found more a foothold

Ok for real I've been down with Cattle since to serve man, it seems like they've been getting better and better ever since Humanure. Monolith is a Masterpiece of an album which elevated the standards of death metal and I can see why everyone loves it so much, but holy fuckin fuck Death Atlas tho... That whole album ripped my face off the first time I heard it, the lyrics just oozing hatred and hopelessness in a way I was already feeling on a spiritual level, and yeah an album so destructive and yet glorious and powerful it literally brought back the plague. And also I can definitely say without question, Cattle Decapitation have the biggest most violent nasty blood drenched mosh pits I've ever seen. It was like watching a feeding frenzy of sharks, once they got going there was literally no way in or out until the set was over \m/ \m/

    Yes!
I agree with nearly everything you said. As for the question which one is better, Monolith or Death Atlas, I'd say there are maybe better songs on MOI, but DA is stronger album as a whole... While I can understand your opinion on sound on early records, particularly TSM, have you heard the newer versions remastered by Dave Otero? Much better!
PS. At last someone paying attention to the lyrics! Thank you!

This was an incredible review. I knew about this band for years because of Monolith, but never really tried to listen until I heard Bring Back the Plague. That was the song that made me a Cattle Decapitation fan. I proceded to binge their works over the course of 2020 and never stopped. My absolute favorite album by them hands down is Death Atlas. It showed up in my life and resonated how I've felt about the human species for a long time. I wasn't a big fan of their earlier works before Monolith of Inhumanity, but your review has made me want to try and again and see if I can find some gems for myself 🤘

I am glad you included Human Jerky and Homovore in this list of albums, rather than ep's. When I asked Travis Ryan directly, he says that the band considers them full lengths as well, given their death-grind style.

The Carbon Stampede is probably when I started paying closer attention to Cattle Decapitation. When the singles from Death Atlas dropped I was beyond impressed and became a fan. I saw them open the Great Heathen Army tour and it was one of the best 4 song sets ever. They truly sounded great at the 17,000 capacity Forum in Inglewood. I’m so F’N excited for Terrasite. Gonna be blasting that all weekend.

Such a good band. Travis Ryan is an amazing vocalist. Admittedly I’m not much of a fan of their early work, though from the mid 2000s onwards they really stepped up their game. Excited to see them with Dark Funeral this summer. Here’s how I would rate them:
    Human Jerky: 4/10
    Homovore: 4/10
    To Serve Man: 5/10
    Humanure: 4.5/10
    Karma.Bloody.Karma: 8/10
    The Harvest Floor: 8.5/10
    Monolith of Inhumanity: 9.5/10
    The Anthropocene Extinction: 9/10
    Death Atlas: 7/10

hell freakin yeah death atlas an easy 5/5 right there, I've never seen absolutely ferocious music completely matched by lyrics that go this hard before. a whole mood is what death atlas is. great ranking mr. meltdown.

KARMA.BLOODY.KARMA: I feel this is Cattle's weakest record by far. I felt like the song structure was too chaotic and their were very few strong, standout songs. I rarely go back to this album personally.
THE HARVEST FLOOR: This album would see the end of Billy Anderson as the band's Producer and bring in (in my opinion) a much needed change of pace with Dave Otero. We also see Dave McGraw join as the drummer, replacing Mike Laughlin. While Mike was a respectable drummer for this band, I think Dave's skills and technicality really amp up the band's sound going forward. I feel like too many people sleep on this absolute BANGER of an album. Still a bit of technical weirdness and chaotic song structure that we see on 'K.B.K' but I think it is done much better.

Can't wait to listen to their new stuff as well as hearing your take on it.

They deserve every bit of the praise. And I tried it again and again. But I just can’t get over these Udo Dirkschneider (of Accept fame) vocals. As soon as Travis switches to that style I’m out. Bummer, cause the package is just brutal in every other aspect.

Cattle decapitation is easily my second favorite band. And death atlas will always be my favorite from them. It was one of the first extreme metal albums I listened too. One of the few bands I can say I like every single release/album they’ve put out.

Yo Rob, when I was listening to Death Atlas the other day, I noticed that Travis' vocals on 'The Unerasable Past' sound strikingly similar to Peter Steele's. If it was intentional then it's extremely creative on his part since Pete used to have a job as a Park's landscaper and loved it so much that he was nicknamed The Green Man because of it. I'm sure that he would share the same sentiments as this album if he were to see how bad things have gotten as a result of climate change.
