Still can't see where this provides any significant advantage for all the additional complexity and cost. It actually looks awkward on the headlands. Ignoring the front and back mounting idea, what is the advantage to the reversible plow? Twice the expense for what? What am I missing here. I know moldboard plows aren't used much anymore in North America at least, so it's not a very important discussion, but I still don't see why anyone would find it worth the additional expense. To turn around and go back on the same track, odds are you need to stop and back up. That's probably slower than gearing up and hustling across a headland and never stopping. I spent thousands of hours plowing with a variety of 6 bottom and larger plows in the days when there was no automated guidance control and when I watch this thing in action, I see the equivalent of four plows to hook and unhook and pay for while only using two at a time, to do the work of one. Why 4 when 1? Variable width plows, I get. They make sense and having used them, I can attest that they are about as cool as a plow can get. Wrestling two doubly heavy mounted plows into place rather than hooking up just one big one ?? Again... why? When they're both raised it looks like a good way to see if you can break the tractor in half too.
Apparently,i have read,some farmers say,it is easyer to work with such combination , than only to have one big plough behind..even in Eu,such combinations,are extremly rare..
About reversible ploughs-advantages are huge,especially when you have many small fields,like we have in EU. It is much faster,you don't need to drive around (circle around). And you don't have that "small hills" and "holes" alongside field (don't know english words). I have worked with classic plough,than switched to reversible. Much faster and easyer.
@@Bare36 possibly some small advantage, but I still can't see any large advantage. We had many small fields, typically as a favor to developers who would rent large tracts to us if we also kept weeds controlled on small pieces. With a semi-mounted large plough you can choose to split the field into very few large, or many small "lands" to optimize travel time on the headlands while leaving enough room to complete the turn without (unnecessary) reversing. We would shift to higher gears on the headland, but never stopped moving, unlike this stop/back up/ stop/ flip plough/ start moving forward hokey-pokey 😁. What you call "holes" and little "hills" , are what we know as dead furrows and the center of a "land". Both of these are of very little importance if you do it right. In fact, if I thought the dead furrow was unnecessarily large, I would back fill it with the plough. But, filling it in at the tillage stage was trivial anyways, so it really didn't matter at all unless the field was prone to erosion problems. All those extra parts going along for the ride seems like a very expensive way to add complexity in the machine and its operation as operation plus the large additional trouble of hooking it up, for extremely little benefit. Semi-mounted and trail ploughs are by comparison to heavy three point hitch mounted equipment, extremely easy to mount or unhook. I could be missing something, because I've never used one, but if there's enough advantage to overcome the many clear drawbacks, it isn't obvious.
@@kennethstanton5407 dead furrows,are not big problem,if you know ,how to do it. 95% of farmers,where i live,do not know to do it properly,and that makes me a headache,when harvesting soya,or sugar beat for them. Also often,you always miss a center for dead furrow,by 2-3 meters,so you have more of uneven surface,which again makes more problem harvesting soya and s. Beet. Than,you must circle around your field,to make even left and right side. Also,dirt road between fields,is narrow (mostly 3m),so, you also,must reverse tractor,with nonreversible plough,at the end of each pass,otherwise,at the end,you will have to big headland,to work and loose more of your time. Reversible plough,has a twice furrows,than classic,so it last twice longer. With non reversible plough,it is easily to make many mistakes. With reversible,you start at one side,finish at another,no mistakes. I was working 190ha in 95 fields (average size of field 2ha,largest 18ha,smallest 0.5ha),imagine how much of time would i loose,with counting,or measuring to find a dead center of dead furrow,from last year. If you close it properly,than it is harder to find it next year,so you will easyer make mistake,and go more to one side. Yesterday,i was plowing,and a "smaller" farmer with 40hp tractor and 2x"14 across my field was plowing,and he moved more to the right side of field,so he ended, plowing the left side,than driving in reverse 10 times. Field was 270m long and he lost about half hour going up and down.
Also, reversible plougs are more advanced in apsolutly everything.
When you go, from nonreversible to reversible,there is no going back.
@@Bare36 I am still not understanding how this is a problem. I don't see a need to measure anything. First, you go straight across the field (what we call striking out a land) in either direction. It doesn't need to be in the center at all. It makes sense not to have more dead furrows than necessary, so one should plan it out so as to optimize between having long travel times on the headlands versus having too many narrow "lands". Assuming a conventional plough, turn right at the end and turn the dirt towards your strike out. Keep circling clockwise until you are spending too much travel time on the headland at which point you strike out again and plough that one clockwise until it gets too wide as well. Plough the land between the two "lands" that have become too wide, by going counterclockwise until you end with a dead furrow joining the two lands. Make the headlands wide enough to turn easily because it doesn't matter. Unless it's a two furrow plough, each pass is pretty wide so unless you desire ridiculously wide headlands, you won't need more than two or three passes on the headland. That said, even 6 to 8 furrow semi-mounted or trail ploughs can turn pretty sharp on the headland so you really don't need a very wide headland anyway. Your description indicates that people think they have to strike out in the very center and then go round and round in the same direction until they get to both outside edges of the field at which point they will have a dead furrow at each edge. Or conversely, they turn the soil outwards at both extreme edges of the field and keep going counterclockwise, raising the plough and driving across the unnecessarily long headland until the furrows meet in the middle. If that's what they do, then I can see how they would think there was an advantage to the reversible plough. When I think about it, with the conventional plough and an operator who knows what they are doing, I doubt that any time saved by doing the herky jerky to go back on the same track with a reversible plough amounts to much. Even for longer headlands, just gearing up without stopping or backing up, to really hustle across the headland and get the plough back in the ground without stopping might still be faster in my opinion than all the stopping, changing direction, and waiting for the hydraulics to flip the plough. The economics of it are also not favorable. It is probable that because of the extra complexity, the inital cost of the plough is more than twice the price of a conventional plough with the same width. Therefore, you have over twice the money tied up in the equipment investment to pay interest on. Granted, the wearing parts will need to be changed only half as frequently, but when you replace them, you replace twice as many pieces, so the "economic costs" of the wearing parts won't differ by much between the conventional and reversible. Anyway, it still seems like an unnecessary and expensive solution to a problem that is too small be worried about in my opinion, but lots of people buy them, so there must be some payoff that I am just not seeing... or there are a lot of people who don't care about being practical! lol ;-)
@@kennethstanton5407 99% of ploughs in Eu are reversible. I know very well, how to work with reversible and nonreversible,have planty experience with both,on different types of soil. Thrust me, It is much simplier, better and faster to plow with reversible. Nonreversible are cheap.. with a reason. Reversible are much more expensive,but when you sell it,you get much more for it. Used nonreversible ploughs are funny cheap,nobody wants it anymore,you will lose more value with nonreversible plough.
Here,you can not make big headland,because,when you want to plow headland,(parallel with dirt road),you must drive a tractor on a field next to yours,where is often planted something,and you will ruin your neighbor's crops with tyres.. and he will notice it. Even people plowing with 2 furrows,are going back,when finishing pass,going maximum to the road,just,so they do not work headland.
It is faster to turn around,with reversible,than go to the another side,40-50 m. In both cases,you need to go in reverse.
Also,if your headland is near forrest,or canal,imagine,how much passes you must do on headland it self,with heavy machinery and ruin the soil,especially in autumn,when it is more moisture in soil.
Where i live,20 years ago,everybody started to switched to reversible. Now,even small farmers with 4-5 ha,started buying used reversible ploughs.
