  • @MagicalBroetchen
    @MagicalBroetchen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +78

    The problem is that sometimes I get random CPU spikes when a sound comes in that hasnt played for some time. After a few seconds of the sound glitching, everything works normal again. I think its a common problem with the current Live version as many people have similiar issues.

    • @AGVersace100
      @AGVersace100 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Have you tried loading the audio sample in the RAM?

    • @MagicalBroetchen
      @MagicalBroetchen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AGVersace100 The problem occurs less with samples but more with synths. I think the problem is that Live sort of disables the processing on certain tracks after a time to safe CPU power but doesnt reactivate them properly when needed.

    • @dealloc
      @dealloc 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@MagicalBroetchen That's not what happens. Samples are easy for your sound card to decode during playback, whereas synth instruments will first need to generate audio before playback, in real-time. Some instruments are more process-heavy than others. For example synths which tries to emulate analogue sounds, often require more resources due to the processing required to produce the audio.
      On top of that, if you have any plugins, they will also need to do processing in chain before being decoded during playing. The more processing the more CPU is needed.
      There are a few ways to get around this, depending on your use-case;
      - You can increase the buffer size and lower sample rates (as explained in the video) to match your system and needs.
      - If this is not enough, you can either freeze or bounce the particular track into an audio file (same as freeze, but allows you to edit the sampled audio afterwards).
      - While not magically making things faster, a good audio interface can help with a lot of audio issues. However, keep in mind that your computer still needs to do some processing.
      - The most expensive one, is to upgrade your computer and/or CPU to a more powerful one. This is of course if the previous solutions don't fit you.

    • @TjMoon91
      @TjMoon91 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@dealloc Your explanation doesn’t explain why the glitching only happens when the sound hasn’t been played for some time?

    • @MagicalBroetchen
      @MagicalBroetchen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@dealloc Yes, but the processing power of my system is not the problem. Those synths work flawlessly most of the time. On a large project I have an average CPU usage of about 30-40% during playback. The glitches and CPU spikes would happen, as an example, when I leave the computer for 5 minutes and start the playback again.

  • @blackmateria6357

    None of this explains why even on a heavily overspec'd computer with all updated software, loading an instance of certain plugins, even native ones, causes the cpu overload indicator to light up even when no audio is playing and usage is reported as sub 30 percent?

    • @rumar4u
      @rumar4u 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This depends on the plugins. Some are optimized for certain DAW's or OS Platform... so millage may vary. For example on my M1 MBP 8gb Ram, I load 1 instance of Waves Abbey Road Reverb and it quickly jumps to 50% after many many years on the market and still not being optimized, while liquidsonic's Seventh Heaven barely gets to 1%.

    • @cal3033
      @cal3033 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      they need to optimize that tho... cause the indicator will stay on if you dont toggle it again...

    • @Ableton
      @Ableton  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi, thank you for the question. The CPU Overload indicator combines the "Average" and the "Current" CPU usage to provide a precise gauge of the CPU consumption in a Set. This means that while using the "Average" setting the CPU Overload Indicator may become illuminated even though the meter does not appear to reach 100%.
      In cases like this, it is likely that the "Current" setting has experienced a temporary overload while the "Average" CPU consumption is below the overload threshold. If interested in learning more, please review the associated Knowledge Base article on the topic here: bit.ly/3qZ4Y1i Cheers!

    Hey Ableton, it's great that you have a new cpu meter but the issue is 11 is far less cpu efficient than previous versions. The community is saying that even with running 11 on beasts of machines they are still having significant issues and your advice is to upgrade all of their software and contact technical support. The problem is ableton live 11. Nothing else.

    • @Ableton
      @Ableton  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, thank you for the feedback! To verify the CPU usage scientifically, please only compare Live 10 (or earlier versions) and Live 11 using the macOS Activity monitor/Windows Task Manager by loading the same set, with the same audio device with the exact same settings (buffer size and sample rate).
      If this meter shows a difference between both Live versions, please get in touch with our Technical Support here: bit.ly/2c6rO3N
      In case you want to compare Live’s CPU meter between both versions make sure that in Live 11 “Average” is selected and focus only on the reported percentage number as the graphs can not be compared.
      Please also make sure to update Live to it's newest version as we improved the CPU usage of some of our new devices with our latest 11.0.5 update. Cheers!

      Same here, and I'm also using a Mac -- a basic, newer iMac w/3.0GHz i5 and 8GB RAM running Live 11 Suite. I turn the CPU overload indicator off; it only spikes when I load certain plug-ins. Considering the modest power of my computer, I run about 10 tracks on average -- always mix of plug-ins, Ableton instruments, and external audio -- and rarely get the CPU load meter over 30-35%. I've yet to see it above 50%, even with all the bells and whistles I cared to use.

    One thing they didn't mention, which i believe is not common knowledge, is that each track in your live set takes up a thread in your cpu. So say you have a cpu that has 8 cores. Each core has 2 threads. So ableton assigns a track to each thread and, up to 16 tracks, typically everything will run smooth. However once you get up to 17 and above things can get a bit overwhelming for your cpu because its running more than one track per thread. Ive found that if you consolidate multiple tracks into one to limit the amount of tracks it helps.

    • @claudianreyn4529
      @claudianreyn4529 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No it's not. I watch all the cores in task manager and they are all equal always. Ableton doesn't use the CPU properly. I have 8 cores and they all run on 44% and Ableton is crackling and shows 100%. I'm going to try Pro Tools side by side and see if this problem still persists. My nerves with this software are already gone.

It's the first time it's happened in the last 10 years... It's obviously a live 11 bug, going by all the other comments. I used Live 8 for years with no problems. Dude set your mac near a window or something where there is good ventilation and airflow.
      I also had the same problem.Mine is an i5 Lenovo notebook.Cpu overload indication shows even when just 1-2 midi clips are loaded and the device heated like crazy. Then I placed a cooling pad and boom all these issues were resolved.🙂
      The key is proper cooling.

    The only thing that helped me on my Win 11 system was to go into the advanced power plan settings and change the minimum CPU load from a default of 60% to 95%. And I'm already using a rather high-end mobile workstation. Live 11 definitely needs to be overhauled...

    Same project built on 10 without any problems whatever just crashes on 11. Saw that my hard drive was getting full so went out and bought two 2TB backup drives and cleaned it out. No dice. I just went through this video and wrote down 16 things to do to try to fix the problem, but after reading all these comments I think I will reduce my task list to three things: 1) uninstall 11 and go back to 10; 2) wait for a fix from Ableton; 3) try not to think about the cost of upgrading. Very disappointed, but as someone else said, still a believer.

    Live 11 is so inefficient in the way it uses my CPU. I have a 4.0Ghz (OC) 32-core / 64-thread AMD Ryzen 3970x Threadripper CPU, using extremely fast NVME SSD's, and 128GB of DDR4 3600 MHz RAM using a high-end quad channel RAM motherboard. It's so frustrating how quick latency adds up with a few plug-ins picking 128-256 buffer size for playback. I cannot go any lower or I will get audio dropouts. I remember using my 2013 Macbook Pro with 4-cores using Live 10 and it could handle tons of instances of Serum, Massive, and Omnisphere with no audio drop outs and low lag. My current system will Overload with just two instances of Serum (no i'm not using a crazy amount of voices either)....Its sad that I built such a high-powered PC for such a unoptimized piece of hardware. Why doesn't Ableton address this? I find it disingenuous when Ableton says its my system's fault. Live 11 will have audio dropouts when i set buffer size to 64, yet in Windows 10 Task Manager, total CPU usage shows 20% during playback.
    Task Manager will show 4 cores hitting 80% usage, another 4-6 hitting 40%, 1-2 hitting 10-20%, and the remaining majority of 20 or so cores only at 5-8%.

    I think 90% of long time Ableton users will laugh at this. You are basically telling us it's our problem Ableton 11 is so bad at CPU usage because we don't know what we are doing. I've gone back to 10 as 11 is unusable at the present time. If you have been using Ableton since 7 and with every update no problems till this version it can't be the user who's at fault. There are people with ridiculously powerful P.C's and Mac's with the same problems. How can that be just down to not having system updated and other things mentioned ? I love Ableton but am totally gutted this version is so CPU hungry .

    Please make this work, if you drop a vst inside a midi rack, Ableton automatically assumes it is a midi device and uses it as such rather than as an instrument or audio effect.
    This would enable us to use midi VSTs in the same track as the vst instrument rather than creating seperate tracks and routing midi. Would really help in live situations where you drag and drop devices rather than creating tracks and routing audio and midi channels from one track to another...that is the primary purpose of Ableton right? ease of use in live music sessions?

    • @visheshl
      @visheshl ปีที่แล้ว

      And if user drops a vst that cannot process midi inside the midi rack...well signal flow stops and no sound...it's as simple as that, i really doubt anything more than this would happen. This situation if far more useful than simply blocking VSTs from being dropped into midi racks...

    How can showing 100% and crackling on actual 44% of CPU is even acceptable?! Ableton is not even using the CPU properly. I have 8 cores, new PC and two channels with a few plugins! This is worse than my old PC on Ableton 10. I can't do anything with this.
    And no! Ableton doesn't send channels to separate cores! I see they are all equally running on 40-44%. This is i7 11800 BTW
    PS: I've replicated an entire project in Studio One. With more plugins than in Ableton it doesn't stutter and the CPU is 20% instead 44%! On top of that it's more stable while running other applications in the same time! You clearly have a problem.

    Higher sample-rates do not result in higher "quality", only higher frequencies being recorded, whether you need them is up to you. Higher bit-rates do not result in more detail, only lower noise-floor...

    • @eph_kni
      @eph_kni 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you sure about the bit depth?
      I record live instruments at 32bit because it not only has a near-zero noise floor but more detail in the transient information.
      As for in the box, I can push recordings peaks into the red and bring them down without audible distortion, where as a 16bit or 24bit signal will have audible distortion in the red
      If I record to low at 24bit and bring up, there is noticeable distortion on peaks, especially when adding processing post recording such as compression or saturation.
      If you don’t want to take my word for it, Dan Worrall of FabFilter has an excellent video on sample rates and bit depth that I feel you may find enlightening

    • @ejmikk
      @ejmikk 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@eph_kni Yes, I am sure, there no difference between detail and transient response between different bit-depths. Yes, I have probably watched all of Dan Worrall's videos, where specifically does he say that bit-depth has something to do with detail or transients? I can't even find a video from him talking about bit-depth, just sample rate and dither. What interface are you using to record at 32bit?

    • @ejmikk
      @ejmikk 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@eph_kni th-cam.com/video/cIQ9IXSUzuM/w-d-xo.html This is an excellent video with fairly scientific proof about the subject.

      @@ejmikk welp I’ve been enlightened and my arguments on bit depth have been corrected and refined. Thanks for that.
      My aforementioned experiences on recording and resampling aren’t different but the explanations behind them are now in question.
      As for the Dan video, I was also incorrect. It’s a Mr Bill video which can be found here th-cam.com/video/z--3MArikY0/w-d-xo.html
      The interface I use is an RME UCX. I typically record at 48k 32bit. If I plan on slowing my recordings down (by a lot) I’ll record at a higher sample rate.
      I should mention that my ears can’t detect any audible difference when playing back these live recorded, low-noise, transient sounds at typical volume/playback speed.
      I’m working from a sound design perspective and bringing these signals to extremes in the digital domain.

    The fact you made this video shows there is a coding issue for CPU usage. I bought a new mid tier computer and performance was barely acceptable with no headroom. Ordered a (i9 12th Gen) high tier computer and it finally plays decent with only a bit of headroom. 3 computers same project. Fix your software!! Going to downgrade and run 10. Nothing to see here - maybe I will check back in when 12 comes out. Will be sure to do a trial first before leaping like 11. Thumbs down Ableton!!!
