- The Africa twin is an Adventure bike but it does not dance well on ice! Ewa goes for a ride on her Africa twin in the Devon winter and finds out the hard way that this is no place to be in such cold weather. The Africa twin does Crash well though wearing its SWmotech crash bars and Barkbuster hand guards. Any Motorcycle Crash or accident you are able to get up from is a good one, This Africa twin Girl has learnt an a lesson on this Adventure

First thing glad your OK Ewa 👍 secondly it doesn't matter what bike you ride, adventure, cruiser, sports, on ice unless your using tyres with spikes in your are asking for trouble my advice to you is if you must ride in the winter when the temperature is close to or below freezing stick to the main roads at least they will be covered in salt, back lanes are not gritted so your gonna find ice just like you did . Stay safe 👍
Yes, I know you are defo right, il stick to the big roads now when it’s icy ❄️
I can only second that 💯 %, most of us have been there 🙄
Just recently got onto this site and really enjoying the videos, lovely down to earth guys!
Ewa' accent and easy going approach is brilliant, keep up the good work and ride safe 👍
Thank you! We are glad to have you here with us 😃 hope you will enjoy our future videos too. What do you ride?
Credit to you giving it a go on winter back roads and getting out. There are many so-called adventure bikers who would not have gone where you did in those conditions. I'm glad you and the bike are OK.😊
@@jonathanlawson3924 Thanks Jonathan, Your right, but no Starbucks out in these lanes 😂
Ewa, there are 2 types of bikers. Those who have dropped their bike and those who are going to drop their bike. The most important thing is you are ok.
I remember Rich telling me that when I dropped in it Germany! Never mind
It’s what happens when you have an adventure bike! Well done for handling this so well!
Might have gone to far on the Africa twin this time, lucky the crash didn’t damage me or the bike too much
Black ice is treacherous on those roads! Glad you (and the bike) were ok.
Yes, I didn’t see it until it was too late, scary but quick!
Strong brave lady!!!
Good for you E. Overall good experience should be a confidence booster. Great attitude. ❤
Yes it’s a lesson, experience… We all get better through our mistakes ☺️
Such a brave girl! Congrats!
Thanks!
You made it back home ewa that's the main thing and you didn't hurt yourself like others have said we've all been there 👍
Thanks Andy, So much support here from everyone 😀
you get a good safety reminder without doing any damage to yourself or bike so thats a positive.
Agree with you 💯 Even if it’s sunny and not that cold ice is still there unfortunately 🙈
Great stuff, being so brave on our Devon lanes, they can be challenging especially in the winter months. I have done similar on the back road from B'Fastleigh to Exeter. Got caught out on a hill just like you. It happens to all of us, and we learn from it. Glad you are ok, and hats off to those two chaps who helped out.
Thanks Bailey, it could have been a better ride but all is well that ends well! Spring is coming soon!
Lesson learnt there, Stay away from back roads when it's icy, they Don't grit them, add some mud and cow pooh, they can be very dodgy. At least you are okay 👍, live to ride another day.
Thanks Ray, Ewa has chalked this one up as experience gained!
Hats off to the two lovely blokes who appeared out of nowhere to help you. They looked more worried than you were!
Yes they were great 👍
As long as you are ok 👍,greasy mulch, mixed with water & ice, gravel the worst underground for bikes, take your time 👍👏✊🏴 KTF.
Was good fun and adventurous until the ice! Should have seen it coming really… what can you do 🤷♂️
You're OK and not hurt Ewa, that's the main thing. Bike and parts can be replaced if damaged (glad it's not), people can't be. Good for you for getting out and experiencing it all. Rich can give it a good clean and polish now anyway lol. Loving your all your vids.
Thanks, Yes my bike looking amazing again, Rich has cleaned polished and ceramic coated my bike! Shes all shiny again
Unfortunately we all have a tumble now and again, mostly caused by road conditions, really glad you were not hurt and bike ok. Take care.
Thanks so much, Never a good day for these things! but all is well
Ewa main thing your ok love and you had help to pick bike up take care. 😢
And importantly your nails are undamaged!! 🤣Well done for challenging the elements 👍🏼
Yes, generally people are good and helpful
Of course! Otherwise there would have been a hissy fit in the lanes 😂😂
OMG Ewa! My backside would have been munching holes in my seat on a road like that! You did brilliantly! Nothing will grip on ice and it look's like you and the Africa Twin came out really well, I think the side bags saved the bike 👍 put it down to experience, if you've never had an off then you've never rode! I hope you're not too bruised? Roll on the Spring 🥀
Those crash bar bags are worth having! Both me and Rich have tested them as bike cushions and it works well!
Hinkley_Biker, munching holes 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Well done. You did better than most. Idve been in tears after dropping the bike. I think the pannier saved your bike from more damage.
Hi Scott, Yes definitely having the crash protection on the bike and also the crash bar bags on saved me allot of money and heart ache!
Love your spirit and positivity had me on the edge of my seat through those lanes even before the mention of the word ice!
Thanks so much, with a good attitude anything is possible and can be enjoyable even when things go bad, you have to laugh
Ahh good on yer for getting out there. Glad you are ok, the damage is insignificant, ignore it - and now you can stop worrying about dropping your bike because you have now done that been there. Onward and upward!
This one wasn’t so bad, it was on ice so not much I can do. I did drop it at a junction in Germany a few months ago on our home to Rome tour, that one hurt my pride as was my own fault
Sounded like the Black Knight...... It's only a flesh wound, I'm fine....... I watched the whole thing clenching my cheeks waiting for it! Glad you are ok
Haha it’s worse watching knowing it’s going to happen! Why do these things always happen when the camera is off!
what a ride! all ends well so no worries! Enjoyed the watch
Thanks 🙏
Glad you were not hurt and that the bike was also fine. The Barkbusters, engine guards and the bags have all done their jobs.
Saved us a fortune buying that crash protection in the long run
Your safe, the bikes good, it sucks, but that is all that matters, we have all been there. I'm glad your ok. Its one of those experiences you have to have one time. 🤞 brave video to do. You should try the bike safe course. You will learn that you can pick that bike up easy. stay safe, ride strong
Thanks so much, I did think weather to post it or not but we are true to our word of posting the good bad and ugly no matter what happens
Your ok all in one piece that’s a bonus
Thank you! I’m sure not the only one this winter to do exactly that 😂
Aw Ewa, I’m so glad you are okay!
The ride looked lovely.
Honestly that’s what engine guards are for, I’ve done exactly the same thing being pushed into mud by a lorry and scraped my exhaust, knackered a wing mirror and my shoulder, adrenaline helped my pick my bike up (it’s smaller than yours) and then I needed a breather before I headed home.
Oh no! At least my bike wasn’t damaged to bad, i won’t ride there when there’s ice about again!
You dealt with it better than I would have. I hate lanes like that in the winter 😔
We are used to it in Devon but ice is something none of us can do anything about once you hit it
Worse than ice on the road is diesel. I ended up in Dorchester hospital with broken ribs after hitting diesel on the road.@@ontheroadadventure
Rich had a slide on diesel in Poland in 2022! The next day it turned out in national news there was a massive diesel leak from a vehicle lasting for around 50 km!
Your hospital visit sounds very painful indeed!
Has long has you are ok that’s all that matters 👍👍we all come off at some point well done for just getting back on and it not bothering you. Any way it’s Rich faulty 😄
And me bike! I love that Africa twin even if it gets me in trouble lol
glad you are ok and no damage to the bike
Thank you! There is some damage more visible after Rich gave it a good wash but it’s nothing terrible
Glad you're OK Eva..
Thanks so much, felt a bit silly but had to share it anyway
You are OK, that's what matters onwards and upwards 👍
Thanks Kevin, better stick to the main roads when icy from now on!
So so gald you are OK well done 👌💯❤️👍
Thanks so much just felt a bit stupid
@@ontheroadadventure no way are you stupid far from it you are the bee's knees end of 👌💯❤️👍
Sore knees more like 😂
If only everyone was perfect and knew all the answers. It's all a learning experience. Well done for getting back on and continuing your ride. The main thing is you're safe and the bike came out of it pretty well.
Yes it’s easy to say I shouldn’t have been there after! It was all fun and games until I fell lol
Glad you are ok. Back on the bike soon, once the weather is better.
Ride safe.
Already back on and riding, I was unlucky on the ice but not put off yet…
All adds to the experience lol
I did learn a lesson even though it had to be the hard way
You did great , but those conditions are challenging for most riders , any time we can't get grip is going to be very risky. All the things that make me say no on a big bike are there , water crossings , mud , ice , all make make me say I'll come back another day, I ride a Tenere 1200 .
Thanks, a lesson learnt for Ewa on this day 👍
Honestly, it comes to us all at some point. Roads at this time of year are wet, cold, dirty etc. As long as ur ok bikes can be fixed or replaced.
Good on you for jumping back on.
Itl shake u for a while but ur ok thats the main thing.
Yes I’m not too disappointed in myself, Rich says he has been riding 20 years and has put the crash protection on his bike to for when these things happen, it’s big heavy thing balanced on two round things…. Some time it’s bound to fall over!
@ontheroadadventure ur Centre of gravity on those style bikes is high. Doesn't take much when they slip to see them topple over.
It's a learning curve 👍🏻 ur outlook and attitude is super strong and your not injured thankfully. 👍🏻
It can honestly happen to the best rider.
Thanks, we live and learn and become better riders
@@ontheroadadventure Absolutely 💯 % 👍🏻
Becareful , I hope you are Ok . Drive safe ❤
Thanks 🙏
Glad you and the bike ok. Don't let it put you off winter riding. Well done.
Thanks Steve, nope straight back on the bike to go again, you can’t stop to think about it, just get back on
Glad you're OK.
Battle scars for the adventure bike, mine has them from going over on a ferry.
They look like some nice lanes round your way, round here we have to watch out for the sugarbeet as well as the mud.
What’s sugar beet?
@@ontheroadadventure It's a root vegetable. They grow loads of it here in East Anglia, mainly used in the production of sugar. They're about the size of large bricks.
@@RidingHelga Oh right, I will have to google it now to see one!
Bag saves the day! It’s all about confidence and experience really, great that everything is ok
Yes Looking at this as a plus, what was learnt out weighs the damage so all is good!
every drop is a shock to the system, pissed off with any damage, but the adrenaline makes you realise how vulnerable you can be. get back on take your time, and get your confidence up. ride safe.
Thanks so much, one of those annoying ones where I should have known better really
Not a pleasant experience but thankfully very little damage. The bag save the front and the pegs took the brunt at the back. You got up and rode away, probably the best outcome you could have wished for. Councils are gritting the main roads now but not the lanes so the ice is treacherous. Stay safe.
Yeah I will try and stick to the main roads from now on or keep to following my rich!
Seemed like some fun backroads but maybe not in the winter 🥶nice video 👍👌
Thanks, yes there’s lots of great lanes around here, check out some of our summer Devon videos, they look much nicer then
@@ontheroadadventure Will do, I need to get over to Devon seen some nice roads there, I’m from around London near Heathrow, but my partner lives in and around Southampton, once I’ve recovered from my crash I can’t wait to go ride some country roads again👍stay safe
Oh dear what happened to you? Have you ridden the new Forest?
@@ontheroadadventure Multiple times I love the new forest I’m not sure if there’s a road I haven’t been on in the new forest 🤣!, early July I was going back home from Southampton, got about 22 minutes away and then someone pulled out on me, I was doing abiut 27-30 ish, I tried to swerve but I got hit on the left side and went flying over the bonnet landed about 20ft away with a leg that didn’t look right, broke my tibia and fibula and still in recovery now I’m walking around but I need to get the strength and movement back, hopefully I can get back on the saddle before march
Oh wow, what was the drivers excuse? Smidsy? Where’s good to visit in the new forest we want to really explore it this year and maybe camp there
Well done you! Glad you’re okay.
Thanks, just a little wiser now 😁
Glad both you & bike were OK. It can easily happen to anyone - well recovered! 👍

Thanks Riggers! It’s how we gain experience…. Through mistakes
If that's the case, then I must have SOOOOOO much experience! 😂@@ontheroadadventure
@@riggers7480 Some learn the easy way whilst others learn the hard way 😂
So glad you are okay and not too much damage, stay safe don’t let this put you off.
Thank you. That’s was a luck one indeed could have been so much more damage
I'm glad you're not seriously hurt, and as we all do, it is worrying if our bikes are damaged. It is all a learning process. Unfortunately, I lack special awareness and was not used to having panniers, so I clipped a post and went over. My bike has a couple of blemishes. Enjoy your next ride.
Oh no!! Did you have an audience too?
Glad you are OK and as the guy said to me when I dropped my Suzuki in front of all the guys I was leading on a ride... AND on camera... "we all do it". Great attitude about it all, learn what you can from it, and put it behind you.
It’s typical I just turned the camera off! They say a bike cannot fall over unless being watched?
@@ontheroadadventure I don't think 'they' are right. I've dropped mine on a driveway when the engine was turned off, because my foot slipped on some gravel / tarmac. I have also watched it gently lower itself to the ground when the tarmac below the side stand just melted in the heat... that was in the Cairngorms last June! But I suppose it was being watched that time... by me!
Oh dear! We have the Bigfoot stand extender things on ours so they don’t sink in mud, sun is rarely a problem though!
@@ontheroadadventure I have a puck I put down on soft ground, but it never occurred to me that in Scotland, even in June, that the road would melt.... but it was 28 degrees that day, so.... Most bizarre was that I had stopped to take a photo of some pockets of snow still showing high in the hills.
Sounds like a bad dream!
Amazing there is hardly any damage
Yep, the barkbusters, crash bars and bags all protected the bike brilliantly
Hi Ewa loving the vids you two put out proper real world stuff 👍.
Like you I ride all year but when there’s a threat of ice I leave the big bike at home and use the small lighter bike I’m lucky to have Glad you were ok and bikes alright and definitely no shame in getting help to pick bike up it’s happened to me on more than one occasion.
Sounds like your a fan of the work smart not hard approach 👍

@@stephenmartin-rn4jf ahh older and wiser!
Aii, be care ful lady, hoop your oke!😮
Thanks, il try!
I'm glad you're okay, I am a regular on those roads because I have six miles of them before I get close to a road with white lines. I loved your comment of 'fuck me, what now', that summed up country lane riding precisely. The centre sections at this time of year consist of what feels like teflon-coated marbles wrapped in non-stick leaves drenched in a slick mix of runny cow sh1t. That's why my AT runs on Karoo 3s and my other bike is a quad.
I'm glad you're all good.
We like the TKC70 for our AT, all part of all year riding I guess
Glad youre ok first and foremost and well done for dealing with it well. Back roads are a nightmare this time of year with no gritting. Also its really good that the bike appears almost undamaged.
I got off lightly with this one 👍
So glad to see you’re OK Ewa. to see you enjoying your bike safely, and taking it slow on the risky roads. I had a small fall on my Africa twin this fall here in Canada, just at an intersection that I started out at , there was sand on the blacktop, and I was turning right a little to aggressively from a full stop..when the rear tire came out from under me. I think I had my traction control off because I put it on my favourites button and was changing and testing it.. I wasn’t even moving I was just starting out at the intersection and when I started to accelerate the rear tire came out from behind me to the side while I was turning. It taught me that when you are in poor conditions, the tires will slide easier than we think. I’m glad you’re OK and you can return to enjoy another day and another ride. On my Atas The only damage that happened was the rear paright pannier dented, so I bought a new one on the right side. It sure does get your adrenaline going. But once you get a chance to stop and slow down your heart beat, you can think clearly and ride safely again. It’s an important reminder to go really slow when you are in risky terrain. Thanks for your videos. Stay safe.😮
Good advice! We are fans of the go slow see more approach, much safer and more enjoyable
Glad you’re ok. Well done recovering your confidence straight away. These things happen on occasion. There may be a few scratches to your steed - but both you and your ride are in the main ok which is the important thing.
Thanks vicky, happens to everyone at some point I guess this was my turn
Well done for getting back on it can shake you up.The roads in Yorkshire are like that at the moment makes for interesting riding.

Maybe to a certain degree we like the danger or the challenge of conditions like this, or the challenges motorcycle riding brings in general…
Get well soon, I'm so glad you're okay, I wish you success 🌹
Thanks you so much, just bruises
Dont knock yourself out about the Fall It happens , When you hit ice it is usually 50/50 if the bike goes down or you stay upright .It has happened to most riders at some stage As long as you are OK Thats the main thing
Thanks, I’m ok about it, just will stay out the lanes when it’s bad like this now

You have lowered your rear shock by 25mm?

Thanks Tony, wish I had stuck to the main roads but all is ok in the end
I am old and biker of 48 yrs. when I see roads like this, I feel for the bike and corrosion and to my detriment have come off several times. Winter rides are for better rides. Fair play to you for getting back on. To do this you need a very light bike with little power
All adds to the experience 👍 we live and learn
Loved the video! Any more solo ride this winter for you Ewa ? 😂
Yes absolutely, I will not give in to a bit off bad weather!
Good for you! Just stay out the lanes
Good advice 👍
Glad Your ok that's the main thing 😉
Thanks so much, have to gain experience one way or the other
Sorry to hear it! Good job she wears the right gear!
Yes absolutely 💯 Good kit on the bike and Good kit on us makes a huge difference when these things happen
Don't tell the insurance or they'll write it off as a total loss so they can make easy fat profit.
On a serious note it's worth having crash bar/soft bags installed on your crash bars and pannier frames even if they are just stuffed with old blankets for these types of falls and drops.
Yes the crash bar bags are excellent for cushioning the fall. Ive no need to to insurance as there was almost no damage
“It’s your fault Rich!” 😂
Glad you’re ok Ewa!
Thank you! Exactly Rich should not abandon me for work lol any ice on the roads in Japan ?
@@ontheroadadventure Not so much in and around Osaka, but if we go into the mountains, the shaded areas can be slippery. Not that we have the bikes that you’d take on goat paths lol
Sounds quite scary to do that in the winter anyway just taking that much risk up high in the mountains is unnecessary! It’s been exceptionally cold in the uk usually the minus temperatures don’t stick around for so long
Did well there, much better than i"d have done....

@@ontheroadadventure that was exactly my question too.
She doesn't share details. Her videos are too superficial. Too high level if you will. Yes, it happens…. Still kick yourself though!
@ontheroadadventure At the time you do, but then you reflect over a cuppa and realise that your ok and the bike can be fixed.
@@matttownsend1652 Yeah just chalk it up as more experience
Just saw this. Put it in this way: the motorcyclist who has never paid toll to the road does not exist. Or, if any, you can count them on the fingers of a stump hand. So, much better this way than an accident. One advice, or better two: if you realize that the bike is going, that you're losing the bike, let it go. Don't try to save it from falling. You risk to hurt yourself, while the bike is repairable. I know it's not easy, your istinct (like mine) is to hold the bike trying not to let it fall. But better for the bike to fall than for you. Second advice: when it's cold, winter or Countries really cold, don't trust the side roads much because, as you have experienced, there might be ice which is the worst thing you can ever meet. The worse is when it's a sunny day like in the video, because the ice is patchy, does not cover the whole road. So you feel the bike having the normal traction and all of a sudden you lose it because of a patch. If you two think you will ride often on side roads, you can also think about changing the tyres for others good also for off road. Cheers
Some wise words here sir 🫡
@@ontheroadadventure just the experience, lady. If someone can pass his own experience to newbies it's good, however the last real experience is on you. One other thing even if it seems you don't have the amount of traffic we have over here. When you start from the green light, ALWAYS let cars start first, then start. I used to start for first and it did cost me tibia and fibula 😉 Always imagine what others can think or do; it saves you from troubles.

@@ontheroadadventure it is for a all year round rider. That’s why I stop in October and start again in may ☺️
Oh no we couldn’t do that! We would miss our bikes too much! We ride almost daily
the bag saved a lot ?
Yes absolutely, it was the same when Rich took a slide on some oil in Poland, these crash bar bags are not only excellent for carrying stuff but inadvertently make brilliant crash protection by keeping the bike from touching the ground!
you did awright ice is a lottery, dirty roads are doable, confidence and relax accept the bike will move a little here and there but rarely go down unless you help it, cross the green with little to no throttle unless your looking for fun, water crossings, usual rules keep the bike as vertical as possible and in a straight line, basically no control changes at all if possible minimal throttle, line stay in the tyre tracks where cars would go do NOT go in the middle line preferably on the upstream side. dont be put off looked to me with a bit of practice , not so cold so less tense and better light you be good.
Thanks, win some lose some hey?!
I always end my ride at the fuel station so I never have to start with a empty tank
That is a good idea, we need to start that habit 👍
Looked like minor scratches, main thing is you're OK.

Brave woman. BUT DO YOURSELF A HUGE FAVOR…… PRACTICE PICKING THE BIKE UP.
And if you cannot push the bike into the correct direction that you need to go…. The bike is way too big and heavy for you to ride ALONE safely.
You’ve got great personality and perfect attitude.
Thanks William. I’ve no issue moving the bike round when not stood on ice. The lesson is to stay out the lanes when icy. Prevention is better than cure 👍
Adventure riding you will drop the bike all the time its normal
Thanks Peter, it’s never a enjoyable moment but it could have been much worse, these bikes with crash bars and barkbusters take a fall very well it seems
Glad you are ok princess, nothing you can do if it goes on ice, the main thing is you are ok and the bike only has very slight cosmetic damage.😊
Yeah win some lose some 👍
Tbh I was going to leave a silly /funny reply but you're not allowed to say anything these days, so I'll just say "honestly" I'm glad your ok . M
Hahaha feel free we like a good banter and not offended easily however I do agree with you, need to be so careful these days 😂
@@ontheroadadventure as long as Ewa's ok, also I guess having the good textile jacket with armour really helps
@@marktorbay We never ride without full kit no matter where we are or how hot it is… Those people who ride without gloves makes me cringe… why would you?!
Totally agree?
A few years ago a mate of mine (a fireman) told me a biker had been de-gloved the night before, I stupidly asked what that was, wish I hadn't 😳
I dont like the sound of that much...Just foolishness@@marktorbay
