My favorite reason to mod a console is to (legally ha ha) play games the way they shipped out on the tv that the developers intended them to be played on. It's not necessary at all, but it adds a certain spice to the experience that I feel emulating on a PC lacks.
I agree with you completely, while most emulators are ok playing it in the intended way just feels much more natural, and adds to the experience for sure
I liked the video and all, but I hate that youtube channels proudly showcase their PS2 consoles with dead CMOS batteries and a single static dot in the BIOS. I was so used to see the dots in motion-even if they reset back to 1/1/2000 every time you power on after a long time-that I found strange seeing a single static dot in someone else's PS2. I found out later that it was an error related to the battery, and seeing so many people ignore the battery dying in these things gradually pissed me off. The CMOS battery should have easily replaceable.
I modded my official PS2 network adapter to have SATA on it. This was I can throw in a modern SSD while also still connecting my PS2 to the internet for all the games with fan servers!
@noaharkadedelgado so far I've been playing the Pro Skater games and Disgaea games. I love the Sly Cooper games too, been a while since I've played any other than 1 so maybe I'll do that soon. As for fan servers, the Tony Hawk games all have them so I've played those online a bit. They aren't super active, but there is a small Pro Skater community so you find people online sometimes.
@ yea underground 1 and American wasteland are the most active games on ps2 but in general it’s THUGPro and reTHAWed on PC that have the most players. Definitely check out EverQuest Online Adventures though bc they made tons of progress
I remember one of my first consoles being the PS2 as well, for some reason I remember playing the one Mickey Mouse golf game on it, and that one rock-esque sketch style snowboard game. Good times.
Hi, Great video! There are a few things to note, though: making your own FMCB card from an OEM card is recommended as those third-party FMCB cards are known to fail. The next thing I'd recommend is updating the apps, OPL specifically. The pre installed version of OPL is usually 1.1.0, which is a few years out of date, and there have been major improvements since then. The last thing would be to either use HDD or SMB (network loading) as your primary means of loading games. USB is way too slow since its USB 1.1. Ps2 discs read at about 8mb/s, and USB 1.1 is roughly 2.5mb/s at best. Smb is 12mb/s, and Hdd is 66mb/s.
Point of note - if you want to get a memory card for PS2 then get a MemCard PRO2 and add freeMCboot to it. Youll never need other memory cards as you can add SD card and have your saves in one place. The next thing is that those Chinese HDD adapters while do work, they have a failure rate and read problems, so getting official network adapter and modding it to have SATA conection is more stable. Next thing that wasn't mentioned is HDMI - if you don't want to spend a lot of cash, simple HDMI adapter works fine. From modding aspect - getting early version of Slim PS2 allows to solder back in hard drive connector so that would be also semi-fun learning project as earlier Slims have provisioning on MB but it wasn't used I'm guessing to save space and cost.
oh you think the PS2 is useless in terms of modding? i've modded my gamecube, and that's the definition of pointless because everything the gamecube can do, the wii does better. the sole exception is the game boy player, but all i have is a few old gameboy games lying around so that's not entirely useful for me rn lol. i just modded my gamecube because it was fun learning to solder a pi pico to the thing, and as someone who has a grand total of 2 hours of soldering experience, it was a fun project to do imho. plus i got to replace the clock battery on my gamecube, and replaced the LED with a fun color!
also for me part of the love and joy I get from modding is not only the modding process itself, but seeing the game come to life in the setting it was originally meant for. I am very passionate about my gaming experience and the work that goes into the games I play, and a lot of them you can definitely feel when you're using the native controls. I know this is a bit of a "cringe" example, but a lot of people don't know that the danganronpa games were originally were released were originally released for the psp/vita consoles and while i've played both and the pc version is not bad by any means, it feels so much more natural on the vita. sorry for rambling i'm just reallyyyy normal about consoles 😅
7:50 They also haven't released a Steam Deck that fits in a coat pocket yet either, the world has abandoned true portables you can just keep with you without having to pre-plan at all or really even think about it.
I modded mine for reasons I can't say legally but yeah there aren't many reasons to mod one. But it also needed a deep cleaning, quieter fan, and a battery change which was a pain to do.
No joke I own every PlayStation aside from a ps2, I've got multiple of certain consoles but not a single ps2. And even though I was a 2005 baby my first console was a ps1 and it stayed that way till I got a psp in like 2013
It might be better to just get a PS3. A PS3 with Custom Firmware allows to use the PS2 Classics Emulator built in the PS3 firmware. It's a very capable emulator that lets you play nearly 80% of the PS2 library, of course some games will have minor bugs but you also have HD remasters to help you with problematic games like the Ratchet & Clank PS2 trilogy that is extremely laggy on PS3, thankfully you can bypass this altogether with HD remaster Sony released. And you can actually play all of your PS1 library, you can't do that on a PS2 if you're playing through a flash drive or hard drive because popstarter is extremely limited. So unless you want to play very specific PS2 games that don't work properly on PS3 that don't have HD remasters either, the PS3 is a far better choice, especially those CFW-capable Slims that don't overheat.
Looking forward to a PS3 video since I got one recently and installed Evilnat but I haven't got a clue of what to do on there and so far have only used it to play Persona 3 FES. Maybe I'll look into that OtherOS++ thing so I can run a Rust compiler under PowerPC or something.
bigsleeter be my friend and play red faction on ps2 with me (or cod 3 or half life decay or the mod on pc that ports decay to pc or minecraft ive been getting back into that recently or bo6 or the long drive)
Does the funny memory card let you bypass the region lock on the console?? If so I’m copping bc my EU ass is done playing the poopoo PAL versions of games

@@berrybreads Really the only downside is load times, and of course the effort to make it happen.
@ see I personally enjoy the modding aspect itself so thats definitely less of a downside for me, but yeah the load times can be horrendous

Soft modding a PS2 is also great for if your disc drive stops working or you can't be bothered to clean it.

I like using a Memcard Pro 2 and OPL. Nice to boot a game from an SSD and not worry about save management.

It would be nice to have a PS2, but I can't justify having a bunch of consoles in my room anymore with how much space i don't have.
