The sad thing is East Asian artists always been easy targets because they rarely fluent in English. So when their notifications filled with angry messages, they cannot defend themselves because they don’t know how to debate in English.
@@MohammedAgbadi It's really sad. Japanese people tend to be conflict-avoidant so they will often cave and delete, thinking they were wrong especially if they aren't good at english. It's depressing af to see all these white kids dog-pile japanese people and essentially take advantage of the cultural difference in their bullying, then claim to be fighting against racism..

@@SnowShadyLP I went on twitter to check out this drama, turns out it's actually super old and the person is also black. This video is super misleading, the commenter also got lots of harassment (apparently way more than the artist).
I swear the only people trying to pick on artists saying they are whitewashing are never even the minority groups themselves. It was a lovely piece of fanart!! I feel bad for the artists getting harassed :(((

That’s how anti-racism and cancel culture works, I guess. It’s always the opposite races/groups getting offended. White people getting offended for black people, abled people getting offended for disabled people, it goes on and so much of the time the actual group is like “Wait, this isn’t an issue we deal with”
I feel like the craziest part of this is that the artist didn't even make them all lighter colors. Some of them actually had darker tones than what they had in the movie. The artist drew them all with a wide range of skin colors, which is *way* more diversifying *and* realistic than just having them all the same "darker" skin tone that the haters seem to want. I don't understand people.

This isn’t art. Where you lighten Simone so much you can’t tell they black. Black Latino never get representation. Every freaking day I see bash of white or pale Latino on media 24/7. Every one who commented has 💯 rights to criticize. As someone who’s am artist and into Japanese art style either example like kawaii that some are extremely pastel or very light.

Im Mexican, im white and have red hair. My family is blonde and green eyed and only a few red heads too, we’re all born and raised Mexican. The fact that people think their doing something by speaking out for us instead of letting us take our own stance is more damaging than anything

The artwork is so cute. A lot of people just don't understand colour theory or colour pallets since this looks more pastel. The characters have brown tones compared to the whiter character who's more pink-ish. Plus the dark background really makes them look brighter. Twitter loves to start things

We use it for people who we don't know/strangers. I am latina but I am very pale, people thinking that Hispanic people can ONLY be dark is actually doing a lot worse than good.
It honestly really pisses me off.
On a side note, I really loved the fact that in Encanto we see Latinos with lighter skin tones.
I literally saw someone on Tiktok (a dark skinned latino/hispanic) literally say he doesn’t believe that lighter-skinned latinos/hispanics experience racism just because their skin as if they’re not from the same culture/race???
Or people that think black people only come in one shade and we can't possibly be light-skinned!

Truth! They've been doing this off and off for damn near 10+ years. "uwu pls no negativity pls" then in someboy's DM's 20+ comments deep going off like they lost their mind.
I had a college roomate like this. guess what she was like ? she never bathed, stayed in her bed on her laptop laid down with her laptop ON ITS SIDE and wore pajamas to class when she could muster up the gumption to get up and go. i would leave for my day and come back 14hours later and she’d be in the exact same spot as when I left, her eyes boring into her head from staring at a screen 24/7. people with this mindset are pitiful, they don’t live in the real world which is exactly why they act so ridiculous. She wasn’t depressed either- she had friends and a community online that she would talk with often but she lived online. sad, but I don’t want anything to do with it.

I have an oc who I absolutely love, but she's Asian. I am absolutely terrified to post any of the art I've drawn of her or even talk about her. It really makes me sad because she's one of my favorite ocs, but I know that if I got something slightly off, I'd be destroyed online. It's not like I just randomly chose her to be Chinese, it's very important to her story and I even asked input from many friends who are Chinese. They all loved her design and her story, but still cautioned me against posting her anywhere because "Twitter won't like that" Very sad times
You should still post them! You literally did your research and asked actual Chinese people, so what does what white little kids say matter? Best of luck with whatever you decide to do. Maybe post somewhere other than twitter.

I always hated drawing human characters because i could screw up a skin tone or race in any possible way and I'd accidentally seem like a stereotypical asshole.

As a Brazilian, I can say that "Gringo" is NOT an insult. We basically use it to refer as people that are not from our country or are not from Latin America in general. So say you're in Brazil, for example, and you meet an American dude. We would usually refer to him as a gringo, simply cause he's a foreigner. That's literally just it. It's a slang word use to refer to foreigner people. People think too much into stuff, smh...

Exactly! People often like to pick Brazil aside, and claim "oh they're not ''ALLOWED'' to say gringo" like bruh, see that tourist visiting your country? In general people call them tourists/foreigners,, meanwhile we call them gringos just because it's a slang we're accustomed to use.

Every month or so there's drama on twitter where American teens bully Asian artists for drawing in pastel hues. Being bullied for drawing POC would honestly make anyone not want to ever do that again and keep excluding dark skinned characters. They really can't understand that to people who aren't terminally online in some parts of the world, racism and colorism are quite foreign concepts. I live in Eastern Europe and 98% of my country is a single nationality, white people. I see a dark skinned person in passing maybe once a year. I'm educated and know English, but many people aren't, and wouldn't be aware of sensitivities. And East Asia is even more isolated in that regard. Attacking them over hues on a drawing is not the right way to educate anyone. It'd be different if they straight up made characters white, but it's never the case. Not to mention every time skin color drama pops up people are straight up wrong about how lighting works and some young teens have this tumblr mindset that somehow if they make a dark character even darker they score extra points and end racism singlehandedly.
They never tried to educate or understand the intent of the artist, they straight up went to send hate nothing more nothing less. You need to have goodwill towards someone whne you want to teach or correct them this is plain hate and trying to explain why they are right to hate them

Thing is,, it's a fantasy mindset and I don't even have race in mind,, I just look at a design and go with what I feel fits, and to be fair probably 2/3 of my ocs are lighter, but I feel people always forget Asians are POC too,,? Idk man if I ever make a public online presence again I'm just gonna make them all elves or demons or something so they can have blues/purples/pinks/reds, or even greyscales for skin tones,, I do that with a lot of ocs already bc fantasy and color schemes pog but at least that way I'd get actively bullied less,,, I hope?? Encanto had probably the biggest range of skin tones for a single Latino community that I've seen in an animated anything. Usually they use a single or maybe just a few different skin tones to represent an ethnicity or nationality.
I'm Cuban, and as white as we are, we are still Latinos. Latin America refers to any country in the Americas that speaks a Romance language. Whether Twitter likes it or not, we exist, we have things in common with other Latinos, and we are just as proud of our heritage.

I hate this situation. It's honestly deterred me from wanting to draw people with darker skin tones. I grew up in an area that was predominantly white. While I have no problem with people of color, and in fact have a few close friends who could be described as such, my interactions with other races in general have been limited due to this fact. Unfortunately, this is reflected in my art. Like most artists, I draw what I know, and that results in the majority of my characters having light skin. I look through my own art and think, "I need to broaden my horizons and add some diversity." And then as soon as I do, I get told I'm being insensitive or representing a race wrong. Well yeah! Of course it's not perfect! I've barely had any practice, and you're just deterring me from getting more! As much as I'd love to share my work, it makes me glad that I'm not in the habit of doing so. I appreciate a decent critique, but I don't think I could handle the negativity of the internet.
If all the characters you drew had brown or black skin, they wouldn't say you need more diversity. Ignore them and their double standards.
If you’re worried you might not be portraying poc correctly, just ask someone from that culture you chose to draw. Don’t listen to white people with their savior complex, if you make a mistake it’s really not a big deal as long as you correct yourself. These Twitter idiots are so annoying :/
This is so true. I once got told that I don’t include enough diversity in my art so I was inspired to draw a darker skin toned oc. I then proceeded to get told (by the same person) that I did it wrong because I made the skin tone too dark/ashy(desaturated) 💀💀 BRO WTF,,,

No but legit both this and the "Pepa being white is racist" debacle go to show how ignorant Usamericans can be when it comes to other cultures outside of their own. It's especially funny when you realize Disney had a black cultural advisor on board and she approved Pepa's skin color being changed to better represent Colombia's diversity but most people who complain about it want to hear none of it because it destroys their arguments entirely💀

I'm literally Colombian and part of my family is from the area that the movie's setting takes inspiration from (Eje Cafetero), and most people in there are pretty much white. As for Isabella..... It's Lovely to hear that your friends identify with her!! My sister is quite similar to her as well and was ecstatic when she saw her onscreen. It truly is wonderful how the team nailed the representation on the Madrigal family so well tons of Latinos see ourselves in at least one of the family members.
The discussion was: "Pepa was Black in concept art but the final character ended up white in Encanto". Black people got angry because that was 1 Black character they didn't get. Then there were a few who were like "Why can't we have one movie where white people aren't relevant?"
@Aiuanntodie自殺 From what I've heard about the industry, it's pretty difficult for any POC in the USA to get in, and even more difficult to get a show going (and even then they likely get their series cancelled, like what happened to OK K.O.). The difficulty was even part of the discussion for the New Deal for Animation movement made by people from inside the industry.
There are people who think Pepa being white is racist??? Wtf?? I’ve seen Mexican people with pale skin and bright red hair....like...there are things called regions. Heck not Mexican but I know someone who’s family is Italian but she’s got pale skin, freckles and flame red hair because her family comes specifically from Sicily where apparently that combo is common even tho most Italians tend to be olive skinned and dark haired.
Why do people that know nothing about a topic feel the need to have a strong opinion on it? They don't even know that Latino isn't a race, or how colouring dark skin tones works, how did they get to the point where they thought they could start insulting people over this if they don't have any experience or research to back them?

For example in Peru it's common for people to be mixed east Asian, in some countries you'll see more people of African descent, other countries are extremely mixed (like Argentina) and you'll see that you can't say most people look like this or that

It sucks because it kinda discourages people to draw poc. Because one slip up in color and people will burn you alive. Pastel drawings are a big no-no, so if that's your style, tough luck. It made me afraid to try drawing characters with darker skin tones (and making these drawing public) or having a character with a different culture. It makes me afraid to talk about poc in general, because one slip up with my limited english and i could offend someone. I hate walking on eggshells on this topic.
I wonder why no-one gives a shit when I draw frisk with Olive skin, but godforbid I draw a single black kid as not Hershey’s color…. I fucking get doxxed. Fuck this world.

Let me guess, Kaeya? My sister has drawn him a few times for tiktok and was questioned a few times why he was lighter, when she actually color picked his skin from official art. In her last video someone tried to straight up accuse her of whitewasing.
to be fair a lot of companies hire artists to make official art and those artists sometimes do whitewash the characters

Also, in the art, there's actually a stage spotlight, and kaeya's basically sitting right under it lmao. Even then kaeya's skintone is still deeper than the others'. I mean just look at klee, she's basically glowing lol. Do people actually know how lighting, esp in stages, work?
Honestly this is why I stopped drawing POC. I would use the eye drop tool so I would get the exact same colour and shade as the ones used on the cartoon/show/movie… people still said I was white washing somehow. I think it’s just a situation you can’t win, Which sucks because I can’t draw some of my favourite characters!

This reminds me of the time that someone did a great piece of fan art for Symmetra from Overwatch. Someone tried pulling this same BS, saying that they 'Whitewashed' her because her skin was a little lighter. They then posted a screen shot of her character IN THE SHADE and said that this was her actual skin colour. Luckily the artist wasn't having any of this and pulled out tons of different screenshots of Symmetra in different lighting and such, and showed her skin colour/tone pallet. Proving that they did not whitewashed her at all. Of course the accuser backpedaled and claimed they only accused them because 'Whitewashing in fanart was becoming a problem' and that they just had to make sure. Yeah right.

Honestly, I think most of the time people on Twitter are upset about issues like poverty and global warming, but they can't personally do anything about that, so they take their anger out on smaller issues (and perceived issues) that have a person they can go after. It's not right, I don't support it at all, but I do think it's a result of feeling helpless and out of control. That or people on Twitter are just looking for entertainment and beat people down for fun.
@@meganmullis5386 I'd like to believe that.... but most of them are plainly just going for a ride and use 'diversity' as their shield, i do believe some of them are frustrated but a lot of these mass are unneeded to show their hubris to those who just wanted to draw art. The biggest issue I have is that people claim to be "educating" artists on how to properly color skintones - but it's blatant bullying. It's harassment and consists of yelling, slander, and unnecessary slurs that often than not directed at Asian (or Eastern artists in general).

but the reality is always violent threats, insults, and defacing the art. There's hardly ever a single good-faith attempt at informing the artist.
Yeah, this is what pisses me off about this! Lke it's not hard to encourage people how to color a variety of skin tones. How is bullying and harassment supposed to encourage individuals to illustrate POC?
If you truly wanna help the cause, supplement these artists with sound advice and maybe even references. But of course, only preferably when they ask for constructive criticism.

What annoyed me on this case was I saw some people, again, use color picker tool to “compare” the fanart colors with actual screenshots of the movie to “prove” their whitewash allegation. The problem is, their method really biased.
Some of the screenshots were day scenes, some were night scenes. They purposely chose the scenes according to each character’s skin color to make the differences seem extreme & the fanart looks worse.
Even if you chose the scenes with a same lightings, you can color pick a forehead or cheeks of a character and they would result different colors. Even on some graphic applications like photoshop, color picker tool has a sampling option to get average color of an area such as 1 pixel, 10x10 pixel, 50x50 pixels, etc… and each setting would result different colors although you pick the same pixel. Maybe the differences not much, but it’s the same slight color differences that they would fuss all over Internet.
It’s so frustrating that they would do everything to put down other people online because they want to be a social justice warrior.
And let's not forget that even if the artist used the neutral colors from the art book, it will looks different in someone else's monitor/smartphone/tablet. You have to calibrate like all the appliances in the world to get the same color temperature AND EVEN THEN, each brand has differences (I used to use a Samsung monitor next to a LG and you could notice the color difference).
So even all of it, people will find stuff to get mad.
Gen. Question I promise, how do you get the right skin color? I try to do portraits all the time and when I try to eyedrop it’s never right, I’ve full on given up on multiple projects just cause I spent like- 30-40 minutes trying to get it right.

@@Winter0721 Hmmm sorry for the long answer but imagine this, you’re uploading a photo on Instagram, then you find a bunch of filters and you try out one by one, you can observe that the colors of your photo shifted on each different filter, not only the skin, but the hair, clothes, the sky, rocks, etc… but still, all the colors on the photo look cohesive despite they are not the same color as original.
And that’s also what happened when you draw. When an artist have drawn a lot. They will unconsciously develop their own “filter” too. Even you might already have it too. You can try by putting all of your recent paintings side by side, you might notice some sort color “harmony”. Maybe because you like these specific watercolor paints, or like that color swatches you find online… you use it over and over again.
So, unless you’re doing realistic painting or the same art style with original materials. You will find it hard to use color picker, it won’t feels right, because its color scheme and your color scheme don’t match.
Experienced illustrators don’t really color pick. They use their feelings, observations and knowledge. They’re able to choose the colors relative to their own color scheme, albeit different than the original materials, but still “feels right.”
You can try look up “skin tutorial digital painting” (or more specifically “dark skin tutorial digital painting”) on TH-cam, you csn find many tutorials on how to start painting skin without color picker. The ones from Sinix Design are my favorites. Keep in mind that these illustrators also have their own styles & color schemes, so just take the general knowledge & ideas before applying your own arts.
It all might sounds overwhelming, but actually just draw what you like. Learn, and fail, and learn from that failure…And don’t worry too much. It is still unlikely that what happened to the Encanto fanart illustrator would also happen to us. Don’t let the fear from these scary stories rob our joy and love of painting.
@@Winter0721 I know this is a little late but mosaic filters can help if you want to obtain an average color as base. But to be fair, when doing a portrait you should use multiple colors and hues for skin, even the face has different tones depending on the zone and the muscle distribution

As an artist who has a basic understanding of colours I knew instantly that the artist was using a pastel colour pallet. I use muted colours for my style, it would be so weird if I used vibrant skin colours when I have the back ground, hair, clothing and everything else less vibrant just like it would be weird if the artists of this Encanto piece used none pastels when the entire piece was pretty much in pastel. People are too quick to judge based on if it looks slightly different from official art and don’t take lighting or art style into account most of the time.
Thank you for making this. It makes me upset when I wanna enjoy artists draw TWDG fanart and see their art receives criticism for not being the exact skin colour when they tried and made lovely art :(

I've seen drawings where pure gray was pastel green in the context, I've seen amazing drawings using insane saturated colors where the character skin was hot magenta and it still looked right. CONTEXT PEOPLE, C O N T E X T.
It's only whitewashing if the colors don't work in the context, like if I picked every color from Mirabel's 3d model but then picked a lighter shade for her skin for no reason.

@@mystrallsnowlight yeah, I've seen a bunch of art tutorials on how to shade skin tones, dark skin tones reflect a LOT of light, when they're under direct sunlight the skin almost look white or light gray in some spots (ik that with cool skin tones under white light it can look like light purple sometimes).
Most people don't really know how to shade dark skin, especially if they're not dark skinned themselves (like me, which is why I watched so many tutorials), so under a harsh light their skin tones tend to end up a bit too bright, but calling that "whitewashing" is so dumb, it's not like they're doing it on purpose bro.

I literally saw two images of like a Japanese classroom and basically they were showing how different lighting can effect an image, the first image was in darker lighting so everyone looked tan whilst the second one everyone was very pale. LIGHTING FUCKING EXISTS PEOPLE.
Honestly I think this also comes down to art style. Fan art isn't necessarily all about accuracy, it's just about appreciating the character. Maybe their art style is super soft and light and they prefer to use lighter colors? Idk man I just stay off twitter.
It could also be the device they're drawing on!! When I do digital art on my iPad the colors always look more light and muted. But when I look at the post on my phone it's always way more saturated 💀
or they simply did not know the skin tone properly or couldnt find the right color! its a pretty easy thing to mistake since some of the characters are kind of light colored and they r all different so maybe the person wanted to save some of the trouble and make the skin tones the same as the others- idek if that makes sense

Well, you’re not really appreciating a character if you can’t work your way around their dark skin because of your aesthetic. I think making their shade vibrant is the trick, not lightening. Thought it won’t hurt to make it one shade lighter.

As a Hispanic person who is white, it literally made me immensely happy when I saw Pepa with red hair and light skin. I also really loved the overall variety of skin tones within the Madrigals, and I just *knew* the other types of Hispanic/Latino people also felt seen! The movie Encanto is truly perfection in countless ways.

When I saw Mirabel I saw myself. As a child I dreamt about a character that looked just like me. Finally after 20 years of waiting Disney gave me Mirabel. Child me could rest knowing I got myself animated. Even on screen I couldn’t help but hold my arm out and compare the tone. I was her exact shade. Which made me so happy.

I was the same way. I remember when I first drew a black character I felt the need to write "This is my first time drawing a black character" in the caption. It only makes artists afraid to post this kind of art because of all the drama the "activism" causes. It's sad.

I’m a really pale Latino too! And while I do not have the same features as you, (I have dark brown hair and eyes) people tend to mistake me as Asian or white. It’s really embarrassing to stand next to my family and be extremely paler while all of them are either tan or have dark skin.

Can confirm the whole “a person’s skin color does not dictate their ethnicity thing” , as my dad and pretty much his entire side of the family lived/lives in Panama, but at a glance you’d never guess that.
If you are an artist and have that artistic lens you know why he chose those specific colors but people with no artistic background would see it as "whitewashing". The artwork has a certain color palette that if the artist was to be 100 percent accurate it would visually look off. The fact that this turned into a whole debate is wild and shows people will find any reason to express their "wokeness" to the point where it becomes misplaced and toxic

For me everything was a little more bright. But the darken skin was still dark the lighter was just more light. Even the colors of the clothe were more bright. I don't have an artistic lens but I don't understand why people said there was whitewashing. Colour photography and video with modern stage lighting were also the reason tan came into fashion. In the era of candlelight it would be opposite regardless of race and ethnicity, England to Egypt to Japan.

Encanto was the first movie where I could point at a character and say that the resemblance with me was uncanny (that being Camilo), I’m from Venezuela, Colombia’s neighbors, and the fact that people from so far away trying to represent people from around here is amazing, and I really don’t have any problem with how the artist chose the colors, it seemed like the difference between skin color was picked trying to differentiate the color of the characters enough.
Also “gringo” for me and everyone I know is just “person from the USA”. We have a friend who moved in from the United States recently and we call him “a gringo” from time to time just as a jokey way, not at all intended to harm.

Yea you could see that there was light shining down and that's not how usually skin color looks without light plus you also see that they use pastel colors. And even if it was white washing I don't think the artist did it intentional and instead of attacking the artist they could just tell them politely what's wrong.

this reminds me of a piece of warrior cats fanart that i saw on youtube a while back. it was a drawing of an orange cat under blue lighting because they were surrounded by water, which made them a really dull brown. somehow, people did not understand this, and the artist had to literally go in the comments and explain how colors work just so people would stop pointing it out
Not necessarily a "whitewashing" issue but similar- I had drawn a character from a show but wearing the traditional clothing of my country and my post got taken down because of some "cultural appropriation" bs! I explained that it's literally my culture and that my people are very light hearted, so they wouldn't mind a literal fictional rock alien wearing it but they said "we can't confirm your ethnicity" it happened a long time ago but I never got over it!

As an artist I'm scared to post any of my art with colour anymore and afraid of getting facial features or hair wrong. I've seen so many artists being driven off platforms for not being able to draw something properly even though they were still learning, or artists who used the eyedropper tool to ensure they got the exact skin tone from a screenshot and still got called out. Yet, I've seen so many characters deliberately drawn alot darker than they actually are and saying the creators of these characters are wrong about the skin tone of their own characters .-.
Don't worry, haters will always complain about your art, whether it's correct or not. thats just what they do and have no shame, They will always complain about petty shit. Colorism is a real thing, but making slightly less dark fanart isnt colorism/whitewashing, and attacking the artist isnt gonna fix it lol. Im latino myself and yeah we're super varied in skin tone. On my dad's side, half of them look white and the other half look more indigenous depsite being all brothers and sisters. It is a true that so many white teens speak for other minorities but it is also true that some non-black PoC will get very antiblack on the topic of colorism. None of it is ok, I wish we could all converse normally!!!

Its actually quite scary! I have to constantly remind people that not every Spanish speaking person is from MEXICO, and not every MEXICAN is gonna look "MEXICAN" because just like America, Mexico is a melting pot. Just like most countries. I have family members that look afrolatino and some that look white, meanwhile Im tan. American here, given the fact I’ve only take a geography quiz ONCE in my life and it was for AP Euro and that I can’t place where the us states are with the exception of my own, my former, the ones surrounding them, the well known states… Probably not a joke buddy I’m sorry to say, if some school out there somewhere DOES have geography classes it certainly isn’t mandatory or at the very least mandatory in the North Carolina/Virginia areas.

As someone who’s partner is Colombian I can say that it’s so true! They are very well diverse in skin tones my partners mom is fair with colored eyes and his dad is darker with brown eyes. His great great grandfather is even darker than his dad. They showed this well in the movie and the art isn’t even “whitewashing” it looks to just be the art style like a soft style if that makes sense
Situations like those are what make me worry about posting my art of characters who have 'darker-than-white' skin. The slightest mistake or lighting shift or palette change could cause all that harassment

As an artist here’s my take: Whitewashing does not exist when the characters you are drawing are 3D models. Encanto was a 3D animated film, different lighting and different settings often made the character’s skin appear differently in certain scenes. A darker skinned character appearing a little lighter than they are in a certain type of lighting isn’t whitewashing it’s literally just how fucking light works.
EDIT: I’ve gotten a couple replies stating this rule applies to all art and I agree, I’m just using 3D models as an example since that’s the style the actual movie is done in y’all 💀 but yes, I am aware it applies to any and all work ok
EDIT NUMBER 2: Ok I honestly didn’t think I’d need to clarify THIS MUCH, but the replies to my original comment proved me wrong so here I go. Look, I know the difference between actual racism and accidentally making a character two shades lighter 💀 I am aware drawing a black character as a white one is insensitive and racist. I’m not fucking blind, but I also know making a character a little lighter than they are due to lighting is NOT making them white. There is no *white* washing in that case.
My take would be the same in 2d art tbh. If you add a very strong light to a drawing with a light mode layer, then the colors would get brighter

If you color dropped on different skintones of the same character in different lighting you could probably get like 50+ different colors. and honestly depending on if you color drop in a highlighted or shaded part you can get an entire spectrum of skintones just from one image. people never take that into consideration...
Speaking as an artist, let alone the admiration for the sheer amount of skill in anatomy and expressions that the artist has, the skin color of every character looks a little paler due to the color scheme itself of the drawing: they’re high on value and even in saturation where the light of the drawing hits, so obviously they will all look a little lighter in skin but it takes two seconds to analyze the entire drawing and realize that it’s not the skin but the colors and light source chosen for the drawing

@@LakeofCrystalclan When you have a lightened a character so drastically from their original art or human reference and that you cannot gather their ethnic background or the general colour of their skin tone in comparison to other characters. This can go for character features as well depending on the art style, if you have completely removed features that eluded to there ethnicity.
Since this picture has multiple people and they all have varying skin tones that allude to the fast differences in their looks and thoroughly expresses a tonal and hue gradient within their skin tones; this is not whitewashing in my opinion.

When it comes to "just because your skin is light doesn't mean you can't be Latino" can also be applied to heaps of other nationality's. For example, my Mums side of the family is partially Maori (a mostly dark skinned race) and partially English, while my dad side is partially Scottish and English. So if you put all of those in the mixing pot its not surprising if members in our family have light skin, like me, while other members have darker skin, like my grandfather, aunty and sister. None-the-less, my heritage is still Maori whether my skin is light or not. @@saltyduckie the other day my friend found out about my non-white heritage and legit was like "REALLY? Are you sure". It's honestly so annoying and I wish people were more accepting of ideologies like this.

@@koji90 Exactly. People need to understand that skin doesn't automatically mean anything. That if you have lighter skin your not automatically just white. Or that if you have darker skin that you're not automatically just black.
But how did they get the original color palettes in the first place? If you just eyedrop the colors from the movie, literally, from one scene to another, you're going to get a different hue on the same character.
I’m glad that I’ve come across this video even if it’s from 4 months ago but this is a good description of how artists try to share their skills and their love for something they make art of. This artist deserved better than being accused of a whitewasher. I know that Mirabel isn’t white but there’s a thing called lighting as well. It would also make sense when colour combinations of a character can be seen as though they need a bit of a change and the people who accused of the artist whitewashing don’t understand how hard art can be unless they are an artist. I’m autistic and I get hated by people for making black characters especially with vertiligo. It’s normal having black characters, and plus I love dark skinned characters. But the ones with vertiligo rarely get noticed and when I show my artwork. “OH MY LORD IT’S HORRIFYING!” or “Why is that character if yours both black and white? It’s uneven and disgusting.” I’m sorry if this happens to anyone who has vertiligo or is hated for your skin. Just know that you have my love and support. You’re beautiful no matter what. 💜
Got harassed for the exact same thing. I was accused of whitewashing the characters in a large piece of Encanto fanart I drew, and I was so humiliated that I deleted the post altogether. While it was only a few people who raised the accusations, it still bothered me a lot, and I've avoided drawing Encanto fanart ever since out of fear of being canceled. That being said, I can't imagine what this poor artist felt after having a whole swarm of people fighting over that piece. It was a beautiful piece and the artist did NOT deserve that treatment at all.
Edit cus I realized I wasn’t super clear in what I said: ever since then, I have ventured out to creating numerous characters that all vary in skin color. This includes poc. I’m just no longer comfortable with making Encanto Fanart specifically because the amount of hate I got from posting it the first time around made me just shy away from that all together. I still love Encanto. The characters are all beautifully designed.
But I learned my lesson. And I’ve been practicing skin rendering everyday since.

I was drawing a character designs for my portfolio and I drew this sibling characters, brother who loves rock and anything heavy metal, and sister who is the complete opposite of him.
They are both fairies and live in a fantasy world etc…
The concept itself was..not very fresh but I enjoyed drawing it. And when I showed this to my friend, she looked at it and start talking to me as if she is my mother?..
Like, “Why did you draw him with dark hair with black shirts? I’ve never seen any rock lovers wear like that. This is very stereotypical and short minded of you. Fix it”
And I was..shocked?.. like..girl, emo kids exist.
(But this argument doesn’t really work here in Korea because..there are no..label such as ‘emo kids’ so no one knows what that means)
I used to wear black all the time and I was not even emo.
And in character designs you NEED some stereotypical images to make it work!
And at that time, I was kinda hurt and couldn’t say anything because I really thought I was doing something wrong, but now that I look back, she was just walking Twitter, nothing more.
She didn’t know anything about character designing but yet she decided to “call me out”

Also I would like to throw it out there that in art lighting and tones of pieces can change how skin tone is perceived, maybe that artwork had a brighter and cooler lighting, idk

As a Latino myself, I saw nothing wrong with the art being shown. I will say that there is a problem with white washing (*cough cough* The Gacha community filled with trolls who make ALL of the characters with the same skin tone *COUGH*) and race bending altogether (y'all remember the Zeefixes art drama?) But regardless, there was nothing wrong. The artist went with a lighter color pallette altogether to contrast with the dark background (which I think was done really well). If y'all want to advocate for true representation, try also looking if the pallette was fitting together and not just a random color thrown out of nowhere. I hope the artist is doing well, and to all the snowflakes who think this is a big atrocity, different color palettes and color undertones exist. As long as the original base colors are showing through properly

I mean this artist really understood the relationship between color, saturation and luminess. They made the backgroud and skin color less saturated but still pretty acurate, in order to make the color and details of the clothes pop out. (at least thats what I think). The more washed out colors might be also the style of this artist. The art is really good and you can see the skill of the artist. nothing is wrong here :) It's just a lovely ilustration made by fan.
Imagine spending thousands of hours to learn how to draw, then spend a lot of time drawing every detail in this fanart, and then get cancelled for using pastel colours

Most of ppl sending hate aren’t even the ones the art work was meant for. + Sending death treats is pushing it to far ok Dolores’s skin color is a little lighter but as you said it’s bcs it’s a pastel scheme. I rlly don’t understand why ppl always are searching for the tiniest details to make a drama . I hope the concerned artist is alright bcs this sure has been stressful for her in my opinion… . I wanna start drawing POC. However, i feel that if its even less than perfect, Ill get hate for it. White skin tones are easy for me as Im a white person, however black skintones are difficult for me. I don't wanna wash out the skintone, but I also don't wanna make it too orange. And the different hair textures are difficult also. Kinda makes you scared to learn :')

The problem with the "professionally offended" is that they are the very bullies they claim to rail against. I don't even think this is about race to them: it's about control to make themselves look good by claiming to speak for others. Shame on them for attacking an artist who just wanted to make a nice fan drawing of a film they enjoyed.
Agree, to some extent it sometimes feel like public shaming.. I've notice the same thing sometimes when someone drew a character with a bit of a chubby chibi body and people started calling them the P child offender word..
This is why I gravitate towards the artist focused message in KL’s new album a lot even tho I’m white; Artists are judged so much by people who don’t know better online that they have to keep to themselves to keep their sanity. Artists then lose their careers because they have to “protect their souls in the valley of silence”. And most of these people have so much cognitive dissonance because of their underdeveloped social skills and narcissism that they will never change their minds. It’s beyond toxic when you multiply those personalities by the thousands.

Sometimes, if you use overlays on your art, it can shift the colors and make them softer, more pastel-y, or even brighter, even on low opacities like 10%.
Now, while I Do think getting color tones correctly, especially skin tones, skin colors DO change based on lighting and shadow sources.
Latina here, and the best thing to came out of it was the awesome "You don't speak about gringo" song. Beautiful. So sad the artist got so bullied, all latinos loved their work. And no, gringo is not a slur: it's a word created in Mexico that refers to people from the USA. That's all. It's just a popular demonym.

I literally can’t stand how everything is so self-objectified, labeled, and based on colors nowadays. The woke kids think they doin somthin right but they are actually just making themselves look like a oppressed hypocrites, harassing innocent people for making a minor mistake or just being offended because they want attention and are over-sensitive. I have tons of dark skinned characters with blonde/brown hair, because it's based off a fictional kingdom where the people from the kingdom tend to be wavy blondes with darkened skin. I'm sure they'd be 'fixed' like that as well. 😭

the word gringo comes from the words "Green Go" which were chanted by latinos to United States military men when they entered countries to intervene with our politics. Theres some other slang words that derive from english. I wouldnt say that gringo is a slur, it is just a slang word that refers to people from the United States. Some people do sometimes use it in a mean "us and them" kind of way, but it is not a slur at all. Most people use it in a jokey or friendly way, like calling someone dude for example.
Last time I checked, we like to tease our own a lot. Not really meant to hurt another. :/
The word is actually far older and was used in the 1700 to denote foreigns in the ports of Spain and Portugal. Comes from a very accented pronunciation of "Griego" = "gringo"
As a Brazilian, I can say that the term "gringo" is truly used as a slang to call people that came from outside our country. We don't use this in a bad way, it's just a slang
