Vocoder on the Juno DS (No Talking)

  • Many years ago (like 2) I posted a video of me playing the Juno DS vocoder. I really didn't like it and ended up putting it on private because I was so embarrassed by it. I eventually reuploaded it and it started gaining traction. This is my attempt at making a version that isn't as embarrassing. After filming it and editing it I think it is just as embarrassing but after putting so much effort into it I had to upload it. I hope you enjoy my demo of the Juno DS vocoder. Thanks for watching!

"No talking" --> Literally has to talk all the time !! hahaha . Great video. I am thinking of buying the Juno DS and your video shows the potential of its vocoder. Thanks for this and keep it up :)

Great demo, well done, and fun. I purchased the JunoDS just for the vocoder, are you aware you can use the vocoder in the the performance mode and can stack 2 or more patches on top of the vocoder? Up to 16 sounds can be layered, with the polyphony limiting. practically speaking, probably about 8 sounds can be layered with the vocoder.

    Excellent video! Subscribed.
I have a Juno but haven’t touched much over the last couple years - left it at my mom’s place but wanting to bring it over to mine to get back into it. Had some questions.
    1) what mic are you using?
    2) can you only use certain sounds for the vocoder feature? I would’ve guessed it could be used with any sound, but I guess not.
    3) can you use any sound of your liking to actually play the piano and then pair it up with a different vocoder sound? It seems like you were doing that when singing man in the mirror at the end, but the keyboard is super complex, which is why I didn’t really get into it and stopped playing. Wanting to invest a lot more time into it soon, tho, as I miss playing the piano.
    Much thanks in advance!

      1. I am using the Bluebird SL, but running it through a pedal that can supply phantom power.
      2. No! You can use any sound you want!
      3. I think so, although I have not messed with it in a long time
      Hope this helps!

@@Exalter it helps, thanks for the quick reply! One more question came to mind. You are using a mic stand, yes? What brand is that? I was looking into ones that can perhaps clip onto the keyboard itself or even the stand but they’re 2-3x the cost of a stand-alone stand like you are using.

That was really cool. Do you need a special type of mic to do that? Does the mic voice alteration work with any instrument you play or does it need to be specific mic/voice instruments?

No special mic but the hotter the mic the better the results like any vocoder, it only works with presets that are designated/available when you engage vocoder mode.

Coincidentally I just purchased this keyboard, why? Because my favorite artists have used it, and it's a massively great Keyboard with so much to offer, given the right musical inspiration. Your videos are an immense help and I could not be more grateful. I would like to ask, could your next tutorial be on how to set up the Juno for use with the vocoder? That would be super helpful, I really want to connect my microphone to this and see how my voice can sound through my Juno. Could you go over cables one would need and etc also?
Keep up the great work, maybe one day in the future we will both be in a festival playing together.
    Cheers!

Thank you for the kind words! I would happily do a tutorial on setting up a mic for the vocoder, however it isn't that complicated. If you have a mic like the SM58 all you need is a cable that goes from XLR to 1/4 inch TRS (you can find them easily on Sweetwater's cable finder or Amazon). Then you just press the vocoder button and your off! If you still want a tutorial let me know, but hopefully this gets you started!

@@Exalter Also what cable should I use to connect my Juno to my laptop for use with a DAW?

If you have a USB port on your computer then you can use a USB 2.0 cable (I think that is what it is called). Here is a link to one on amazon: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NH11KIK?pf_rd_r=MQHEW65Q1TAHP5MJAR9S&pf_rd_p=5ae2c7f8-e0c6-4f35-9071-dc3240e894a8&pd_rd_r=a2e726eb-4e2d-44bf-b220-7d13c1aba407&pd_rd_w=EULf2&pd_rd_wg=k393t&ref_=pd_gw_unk

The mic can be used without the vocoder. There is even a dedicated knob to control reverb!
