He's sorta galloping along on his sax, having fun and makin' a bunch of people happy. I've always felt like Sonny Rollins plays just a hair behind his rhythm section..his own sound. Truly 'Colossal!'
Saw Mr. Rollins as i ushered his show in Millenium Park here in the Chi in about 2008. Big white hair, big face, big sax.... I felt like i watched another Legend.
Not saying these guys aren't amazingly talented but when your interpretation is nearly indistinguishable from the original it's almost butchering the song. The original is much more appealing than this.
Interesting point . But what’s the point of them playing a similar tune to the original . I’d just listen to the original . Additionally is something that’s has always been in jazz. Artists usually had their own twist on stuff that was not their original composition. But good point
Improvisation at the moment of inspiration by a true master of his instrument is what makes jazz the most compelling and beautiful musical art form. Just a blessing that this moment was filmed and recorded for us to enjoy.

Really did not expect a quote of "Parade of the Tin Soldiers" by Leon Jessel
It's wooden.
Sonny on a pre- mark Vl tenor with a Lawton mp. Very interesting.

mccoy tyner's playing has gotten very dense and percussive over the years and it makes his nuanced harmonies less evident to the listener.
I agree. I prefer his earlier work
i concur. i have "real McCoy" and Coltrane's a love supreme. he sounds amazing on those LPs
I like him more this way
