    Wow those shots at sunrise were absolutely stunning! Haha we are the worst at snoozing our alarms just in everyday life. When we are on trips we always plan to get up early to go out and take photos and film content but always snooze our alarms! 😂 Can't imagine how much you would want to when walking all those miles for so many days!!

    Love those sunrise silhouette moments. You have so many precious memories. Thanks for including maps that show where you are. My sympathy for the road walking feet and the instant coffee. I can't decide which is worse but I suspect it might be instant coffee 🤣

    1st video I have watched for a long time since I am in the Middle East. Followed you because of Christchurch and my annual travels there.
    Lived near this area for 3 years. The high desert is amazing in winter and during summer nights.
    Too many LA people trying to be hikers there. Hope to catch more of your PCT adventures

    @12:29 Mile 549 is where I was in a wind storm that I and others had to camp in that sounded like a freight train going by all night long and blew everyone's tents down and damaged a few of them. And we were all tucked in behind bushes. It never stopped till after the sun came up. There were dozens of dead trees knocked down across the trail between there and Tehachapi. That was probably the worst spot on the entire trail for me haha Within a few hours after sun up it was a beautiful day

    The long flat aquaduct is quite the contrast from the land of the long white cloud is it not?

    • @sempergumby3929
      @sempergumby3929 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The sensible question is this: How is a flat aquaduct supposed to be part of the "Pacific crest"?
      Simple Answer: It's not.
      Geographically, it is NOT where the trail should be, but there's a reason.
      The reason is the necessity to bypass a HUGE piece of private property: The Tejon Ranch.
      I don't know much more details, but rumors abound that someday the owners will allow a trail up and down their hills, so the trail will no longer need to follow that dumb flat stretch.
      When that will happen, who knows.

    For future hikers, I would like to dispell a common misperception.
    Weather, time of day, and time of year (yes, even in SoCal) are The major determining factors on temperature. I lost count how many time people asked me about the "hot" sections going NoBo (northbound for them). I went through SoBo and the sections I got asked about were wicked cold in April (mostly the first half). The NoBo hikers were bound to go through the same sections in the latter part of may.
    I needed major warming layers, esp. at night and they needed sunscreen, extra water, etc.
    Beware preset expectations on the conditions, especially regarding weather which is inherently variable, by definition (unless you are visiting the coastal cities maybe).

    • @sempergumby3929
      @sempergumby3929 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      For various reasons I hiked the LA Aquaduct mostly at night (SoBo) and it wasn't so bad until about 2 am. By 3 am I was so miserable (freezing cold + windchill) and I was in a very strict No Camping zone. Of course I survived, but I have no wish to ever repeat that experience.

      I met several Kiwis on the PCTs in SoCal. Sadly, I missed Mari and Nick somehow.
      The Kiwis I met all seemed to have some concern about how to deal with beers while out hiking.
      This seemed like an odd issue. Side note - none of the German hikers had such an issue, but they could set a pretty mean pace when beer is mentioned.
      Anyway, I finally figured out the issue, and had a good laugh. You see NZ has beer just like California has beer. But there are differences. California doesn't have Hokey Pokey ice cream, and New Zealand doesn't have beers. Wha??
      And btw, not to change the topic, but Australia has Koaler Beers, but they aren't actually real beers, they're marsupials. 😝
