New CLA45 S! Why it's better than the A45! + Shooting Brake

- Mini AMG GT 4 Door?! CLA 45 S is stunning, and here’s the full review. Thank you Dr Strange for the lift! ;) Just came back from unveiling my GT63S 4 door at MB World, and now it’s time to review its little brother here in Madrid! The CLA 45S now one of the most amazing looking AMGs, literally looking like an #AMG GT 4 door mini!
But that wasn’t always the case, previously the original CLA 45 was a bit of an odd proposition. It wasn’t particularly better looking than the A45, if anything it couldn’t touch that car, reduced rear room and head height sealed its gate for me. It always looked the poor mans C63.
Now the new car is a different proposition as far as design goes, it’s been designed as a small brother to the GT4 door rather than looking like an A45 with a boot. And it immediately ups the desirability of the #CLA45S, and it really needs to in order to justify its existence.
Compared to its predecessor it’s technically a completely new animal too. Previous car was a 4 pot turbo with 360BHP, front biased haldex style 4x4 system and a 7 speed, much like today’s CLA35. The new one is totally different. It’s got 4matic+ with drift mode like the GT 4 door, but executed in a different way!
The engine is also all new, it’s still 4 cylinder single twin scroll Turbo, but the engine has been completely remade for better cooling and to deliver more horsepower, torque and a higher rpm. It’s rotate 180 degrees compared to last engine to be both more aerodynamic and help with cooling, and much learning form the Gt 2 door and 4 door has come into the development of this engine. It’s a totally new M139 4 cylinder engine with 421 BHP in the S, A New 8 speed gearbox, more rigidity, and new suspension.
There is of course a shooting brake variant too, now the only full fat AMG shooting brake available with the CLS63 discontinued. A very tasty Wagon which we will also explore the differences in full on CLA45S Shooting Brake form.
BUT is there still understeer like the old car? Is it compromised like the old car? Is the increase power enough and have regulations effected sound? And most importantly: this or the A45S?

Did you enjoy the new intro style? Shorter and includes the car too. 😃 I like the new CLA45S, it’s an exhaust mod away from being an near perfect daily. It’s no M2 Comp in driving pleasure, but 10 times better day to day.
The CLA is also simply better sorted than the A45S, and shooting brake is the one for me.
I will do a proper full review when we get one of these in the UK, so until then! 😉

I always like your video's. Always a lot of information, I only regret you you didn't Talk and render the A-sedan. It just seems better proportioned to me somehow. I don't like the big overhang on the rear of the cla (and shooting brake).

@@ToniSatoAvag Full RWD would be sh*t since you couldnt bring the power to the road. If you want to drift you can just activate the drift mode.
Personally i don't like what brabus is doing to AMG engines. They take away the effort of craftsman from the engine they make because the essence of the AMG engine is it was single handedly made by an engine builder that's why the engines they made has there signature on top of engine hood. When you buy a AMG car it's sorta like buying an artwork

I don't think they can overcome the EU regulations regarding noise pollution, so I reckon that won't be the case. We're doomed..

I agree, the AMG approach of channeling real exhaust sound through the cabin as opposed to simulated soundtracks is the better one

I love how he goes the extra mile to make his videos look great with all the effects and stuff because those extra things really make a difference I want to see the vehicle from an outside perspective so that I can see every angle of the car and see how it looks driving on the road I don’t only want to see you talking in the inside of the vehicle and ik not everyone has the equipment and resources but if u do just do it cause it makes the world of difference so props to u G❤️

Made himself out to be above everyone else, when really the "influencers" i.e. Raz, produce a much higher level on content which in my eyes is vastly more informative and enjoyable.

In my opinion, the CLA looks much better than the A45. I have the old version of the CLA 45 AMG. Sounds better than the new one, but when we talk about design I would choose the other one. Thanks for you great video, bro!

Brillant video Raz, really gave an good insight. My dad just ordered one to replace his C63s next spring and obviously we never drove one before. We are tracking our cars 1-2 times a year and I expect this thing to be very much capable and fun. Also very excited to see how it fares in comparison to my w176 A45.
TheMBCreative question is why would you replace a c63s with this ?
T well, main thing is that he had issues with the carbon ceramics. Also the 45 provides more daily useable power compared to the 63. I love the C63, but it badly needs 4wd.
Never driven a Mercedes before until my Cla 45s arrived a few months ago. It's my new daily driver now. My tesla has more power, but no soul. I agree the cla 45s is everything you say it is just amazing. Tempted to move up to the new 63s next.

The little CLA45 IS THE BEST and sharpest looking amg car right now and the shooting brake takes it to a perfection level
This is the perfect Mercedes for young people.
I think it just looks brutally awesome.
But I’m so sad about the sound though. Especially since amg were always the ones making their cars sound so unique and special.
Now it just sounds like a lawn mower.
I know it’s not their decision but I’m wondering why other manufacturers are able to have better outcomes regarding sound. For example the Hyundai i30N.
Agreed, all new Mercs will need aftermarket exhausts. Even the AMG Performance exhaust is lacklustre. Disappointing.
I've heard from one automotive youtuber that European Union limit the loudness of the exaust and Mercedes will not make different exaust for diferrent markets.
@@ristekostadinov2820 yes that's true. Which is why aftermarket exhausts will become commonplace with AMG. They've lost their spark with this dull sound.

I prefer the A45 S AMG. Shorter, lighter, a bit faster, more nimble handling, the best hot hatch in the market. Good looking from every angle, unlike the CLA 45 S. That is why I have one on pre-order. Can't wait to get it.

For a short compact guy like me this car suits me better. So much power in a small form factor. Am actually downgrading from an Audi RS5 coupe 2018, which I am going to trade in for the A45S. My RS5 is more than a year old but I have this urge for a smaller lighter fast car and this car appears to fit me the best

This makes me happy. I have the first gen CLA 45 AMG. Lots of people hated the first and it wasn't fair, that car and the A45 was Mercedes stepping into their new, smaller, more powerful engines. All you heard about was the RS3. This silences most critics. 1st gens took a lot of arrows for the future super compacts, this new CLA cranks it up. Great video as always, love the new intro!

The back end of the new car is less droopy looking making it less feminine looking. Very good job on the styling of the new car. They will get a lot more males buying this car now for sure. Excellent video.

I really like this thing. Especially in that colour combo. More interesting than the hot hatch imo.
In regards to sound though, I bet it sounds much better/louder in person. Cameras don't do these cars justice when it comes to sound, especially the new models with exhaust filters. I remember hearing the C63S facelift on video for the first time and thinking it was a tad quiet, but when I heard it in person it was still so loud and aggressive (just with reduced pops/crackles). AMG have done a good job here, plus you can always go aftermarket (full exhaust or just a more open backbox to avoid unwanted attention from the police).
This new CLA does sound quiet in person, I've seen one just last week. Comparing to the previous gen which was just completely brutal, this is a disappointment.
Whiteless Eyes well then aftermarket exhaust is a must.
@@DanielSadjadian Yeah but would still prefer it if they'd kept the stock exhaust from the previous gen. Sounds better than any aftermarket exhausts.
@@MercilessMrBrooks true stock exhausts have the nicest tone/overall sound. Perhaps an aftermarket backbox then, to help increase the volume but not affect the tone.

I find this Perfect sized Family car.. i dont know why people always going for E class, Rs6, when there is such good alternative.. perhaps the power they deliver, but also twice as pricy.

@RealCapo88 I bought my C55 AMG BECAUSE of the sound. I then got ceramic coated headers and a RaceIQ tune for it to AMPLIFY the sound.
When I got a WRX for a daily driver, the first thing I did was get an accessport for tuning, and the second was visiting an exhaust shop to make it louder.
Sound matters. Proclaiming that it doesn't is the equivalent to telling a diner at a restaurant that flavor doesn't matter in their food experience. It's "sustenance" and nutritional performance that matters

It's crazy that this sports sedan can actually keep up in a drag against even something as respectably fast as a C7 Corvette...we're living in some weird times man. I remember when a sedan getting under 5.5 sec 0-60mph was considered high performance!
How does it compare to driving the 2019 AMG C43 coupe? Specifically as a daily commute car?
Honestly, I couldnt really tell you because I’ve only driven the c43, but id assume that as a daily driver it would be fantastic as all the merc performance sedans are but i feel like the 45 would be more like a pocket rocket, which i actually prefer. If your looking into buying one then good for you I wish you the best its defiitely an awesome choice!
I think its great that you mention that CLA isn't really trying to be compared to the A Class. The main purpose of the vehicle is to provide a cheaper alternative to the CLS but with the inception of the GT-4 Door, Mercedes saw this as an opportunity to rebrand the CLA and target a new market! Personally, I think the Matte Grey is an awesome color but it must be hard to live with right? Does it scratch easily?

Err.... 3:23 you need to change the bhp to match the car you're referring to. The white one in your video is the facelift model which has the upgraded 381hp and faster 0-60 times. The details you put up were from the pre-facelift. 👍
kevin cassell like most reviewers on these amg videos they give the pre facelift figures to make the newer car seem a even greater step up. See it everywhere to be honest not just with cars..
