The song is taken from a poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge of the same name. Sections of the song are from the actual poem.
The Mariner kills an Albatross which sailers at the time considered to be good luck. A curse is then upon the ship and it’s crew and they all die except the Mariner. He’s taught a lesson that “man should love all things God made” and then has to tell his tale wherever he goes.
The beginning of the video he describes what he states on their live album “Live After Death” where he says “this is not what to do when a bird sh*t’s on you” This makes reference to a girlfriend in the UK being called “a bird” and if they treat you badly, best not to follow the Mariners example of killing a bird (Albatross)

The Albatross was considered bad luck, not good luck. Killing an Albatross was also considered bad luck.
The main belief was that an Albatross carried the soul of a dead mariner. Sighting one flying over the ship was deemed to be good luck as sailors believed the soul the Albatross was carrying was protecting them or brought wind for the ships sails. Hence killing one brought bad luck. Other sailors believed they were also a bad omen as it could mean someone on board was doomed to die in the near future. The killing of an Albatross they believed would mean a curse on the entire crew.
The poem itself describes both sides of the lick the Albatross brings.

Heavy Metal is a tribute to Iron Maiden ! Masterful musicianship, front man, with charisma, powerful vocals, stage presence, and a band with limitless energy. Their songs & lyrics are based on historical events, some wars, as well as mysticism, or literature.
This gem is based on the Samuel Coleridge poem, of the same name - It is an extremely long (& pretty famous) work,, but the original didn't have 2 guitar solos in it,, so we can all thank Maiden for that addition.
As you have talent & an ear for music industry, this band should be a treat. They have been this good, for a very long time, and mind you, they are back touring after 2020/2021 pandemic shut down their tour. But, the Legacy Of The Beast Tour has resumed. Will be on 5 continents. As if other commenters have not mentioned ? It's always delightful to react to their LIVE performances... They started band in '75,, but really took off,, '81 - '83 & they haven't looked back... The only original music video that I would suggest, is the song 'Wasted Years' - a sort of video scrapbook of their heavy touring schedule, life on the road, many candid, 'off stage' moments, from ALL over the world. That video also demonstrates the inception, and growth / various renditions of their mascot 'Edward T. Head' / 'Ed The Head' / aka - 'Eddie' All the original artwork was done by Derek Riggs, and you will find Eddie, on every album cover, occasionally LIVE on stage sword fighting the lead singer, on all of the merch & on their private 747 jet.... 'Ed Force 1'

There is a reason that Iron Maiden is one of the most beloved bands on the planet for 40+ years. Their live performances, their talent, their tightness, bruces vocals. This to me is song writing and playing at its finest.

They are playing for the audience, and having the time of their lives doing it.
They been around since 1975, was formed, the leader and bassist writes 90% of their music. The singer pilots their private 747. They are touring their 41st album this year. Over 200million albums sold. They have rarely if ever have had a song played on the radio or TV. Would might like Dance of Death En Vivo for something extremely theatrical. Or Hallowed Be They Name 1982 offical video which was taped 2 days before the album that song was released. Most of of their music is about History or literature.

The song is based on a poem of the same name. In short, a man kills an albatross, believed by sailors to be a bird of good luck, then he and his crew suffer a curse of thirst. His crew dies, he praises all animals and is freed from one curse but damned to tell his tale for the rest of his days. That's a very rushed summary. If you read the lyrics whilst listening to the song it really brings to life what the song is about

Song based on a very long poem The ancient mariner by Coleridge “ tis the ancient mariner and he sails from sea to sea by his long grey beard and wittering eye……” its about the mariner coming across a giant albatross during a voyage
In answer to your question the song is about a man that kills an Albatross. "What not to do if your bird shits on you" has 2 meanings. Bird can mean bird and female partner. Shits on can mean literally be poo'ed on or treated badly.
So it is a crude joke.

I remember seeing this live in Scotland and America on tour in the eighties. Your starting point for this song should have been to read the poem that it is based on. You would get way more out of the picture painted by the music and lyrics that way.
For your taste I would recommend the studio versions of Still Life and Wasted Years. There are great covers of Wasted Years across different genres because of it's melodic composition.
Plus, Still Life has a real ending and I know you'll like that. lol

May I suggest something a little different?..an ALL female Japanese rock band...now don't be put off by the langauge..they do add English phrases....So just see the vocals as another instrument...The band in question is BAND-MAID...A wonderfully talented group of 5 ladies who's on/off stage personalities are Joy to behold...They were not brought together as a coporate money making exercise like some Japanese musical entertainers..But came together as part of a the dream of the Rhythm guitarist/vocals, Miku Kobato. Who was working in a Maid cafe in Tokyo and had the dream of ladies in Maid costumes playing cool music...They have been together since 2013 and I have never heard a bad song by them...Their MV's are great..But playing LIVE they are AWESOME!....I suggest a few tracks I feel you should check out.... "Real Exsitence" LIVE...."Dont You Tell ME!"..LIVE..at the Zepp(this track might be tricky to find on YT)..."Moratorium" LIVE....."FREEDOM" LIVE..."DOMINATION" LIVE.....well to be honest anything by them.....Band members you have Miku Kobato guitar/vocals/lyrics/founder/little pigeon, Saiki Atsumi, lead vocals/last say in what goes lyrics wise/Ice Queen, Kanami Tono "Mincho", lead guitar/composing genius/adorable airhead/..Akane Hirose, drums/percussion/half gorilla with apertite to match!..and MISA "The Barefoot Assassin" Bass/whiskey drinker, even when on stage!...Enjoy!..Po!

You talked about the diversity of the crowd and being surprised by that but it’s not really all that shocking. One thing people who are not a fan of metal fail to understand is that metal fans are really accepting of all people, no matter race or skin color, who listen to metal. Ive been to, I could not even begin to guess, many metal concerts and that diverse crowd is a constant. When I was a teacher I would play music in class as my students worked and naturally much of it, not all be there is other stuff I enjoy, was metal and I would often have students of color say metal/rock was white peoples music and that made me sad. It made me sad because people were judging something based on a persons skin but also because it showed me those kids did not even know their own history. Rock music has such a foundation in music that came before it, a lot of which was from artist of color. Many artist of color, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Watters, BB King, Robert Johnson, were influential in rock musicians. Also many early rock artist were people of color such as Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, and Little Richard just to name a few. Music is a universal language to be enjoyed across race and culture no matter the genre.

I would love to see hallowed be thy name, or the thin line between love and hate. Or if you'd like a switch up of artists, judas priest is another band in the brittish invasion that has tons of great songs. Tho not as story driven as maiden.

It's funny you making comment about the "diverse" crowd. In our world there are only two types of people, Iron Maiden fans and "others" lol. If you are wearing the shirt and singing the songs then you are part of the family, it's that simple. 🙂
