Totally agree with your take. I like a lot of the aftermarket bits I’ve found for the BT faction, and think aesthetically they’re better than the default product. And since I don’t plan to enter tournaments and only build and paint, I don’t see it as a problem.
Only 3D printed stuff I use is small accessories and bits, such as headswaps, and even then i usually relegate those to some of my less meta models that I just use in casual games. I do however think that it is incredibly silly that in a lot of cases if I wanted to get some thunder hammers or something similar from GW I could possibly have to go buy an entire kit i may not even use.
I bought a leviathan dreadnought for 80 bucks and then I 3d printed a knight and a leviathan for 20 so the price difference is quite appealing since the 3d printed one came with two of every weapon option as well instead of having to fork over 50$ more for the extra weapons.
I think you nailed it re: the consumer needs to support the IP, but also the IP owner needs to evolve with the times. Think while we're in this grey area its going to be sort of a yin and yang of 3D printing filling in gaps left by the larger IP's products. Where the line ends regarding how much 3D vs original parts is quickly becoming the hobby's Ship of Theseus fallacy unfortunately. Time will tell!
Try living in Australia and keeping up with the hobby. I worked for the company 3 times in the past and have over 30 years experience in the hobby. Even back then it was expensive but since 2015 the company has only gone downhill and at a rapid rate. I acan now print models with BETTER quality than GW is currently producing (as an example the Heresy Space Wolf termiators). Without 3D printing i wouldn't be playing at all so as far as i'm concerned go for gold. If GW are charging what they are and for the same price of an army i can buy a printer and print 2 2000+ point armies it tells me that GW are the ones making the mistake.
@@LittleIAO given GW's history and the current economic environment in Australia, Great Brittan and the rest of the world, Gw will maintain their mission to attain never ending profitability. 3d printing technology is on par or better than what the billion dollar company is now producing and for a fraction of the price. Anyone with any sense can see where the future is leading
Totally agree with your take. The funny thing about a gap in the market is that GW can't even keep anything in stock these days, lol. I print a TON of stuff for Heresy, but I tend to not do very much for 40K as I feel like other players there are less accepting of 3D prints.
It's basically an ethical question. Proxies are either ethical or not regardless of if you purchased one original or none IMO. I think it's safe to say the most important factor is not breaking any laws. After that we can at least have some discussions and hopefully the companies are taking notice and trying to get in there and compete in the space fairly too.
I think GW seriously needs to look at their competition because people are starting to pick up that GW is not the be all end all. If they want to stay relevant as the primary model makers, they need to exactly as you said, "get with the times." But I jumped ship on GW for BattleTech years ago, so no matter what happens to GW I've got mine.
@@LittleIAO I mean buying a decent recast of a Titan that won't kill the bank account or credit card is much better than buying an official Titan in my eyes.🤔 3d printing is great for people that can't afford something like and as steep in price as let's say Death Korps of Krieg, I've seen some fantastic alternatives on the internet and on Etsy.
I will always use 3D printed and recast models and parts.
Recasting is a whole other thing. I can't support it.
@@LittleIAO I totally understand that.

Sure and yes I think it's something we have to weigh for ourselves.
Cool thoughts 🔥
Thanks Seven.

I would love to see them expand their options.

Yeah I can understand why anyone is looking at these options.

Heh, preach it brother!
Yes, it creates competition and creativity. There will be no need to buy from gw in the future. In five years this tech will be insane
I am very curious to see where it goes.

The pricing in Australia seems to be the highest. I wish it were more affordable everywhere. Perhaps 3D printing will cause a shift in the future.

I bet there will be plenty more discussion about it in the future.
What about making proxies of models you own? You already supported the company.

Yeah we'll see what they do. I hope it's good!
3d prints and recasts are better on my finances than paying full price from GW or Forge World.
I have a lot of interest in where 3D printing goes. Recasting is something I can't support. But I'm also not the model police.
