Hi! Did you explore the place on your own or with guided tour/excursion? Marseille is going to be one of the ports on my cruise trip this coming June. I wonder if exploring places on your own is better than guided tours. How's the public transport/buying bus tickets? Any tips?

We do it on our own. Walking or hop on hop off bus is easiest. Just getting up to Notre Dame is uphill.

Last time we went here, we explored on our own. We do really love Tours By Locals though! How was your trip? Any advice for when we go back next year?

@JaymieTaylor I actually was there June 3rd, and we decided to explore the place on our own. We started walking from the ship, but we really didn't know what to expect or where to go. Then, after about a 10-minute walk, we notice a waiting shed with a big sign, "All you need to visit Marseille," then you'll see another sign that says "free shuttle."" So, we got on the shuttle, then it took us closer to the area where you can start walking towards La Vieille Charité. It's a really nice big church. Then, if you keep going forward from there, you'll find some really nice and charming alleyways. After that, we kept moving forward, and we found this sort of a fishing village/ marina full of small colorful boats and sail boats. There you'll also find a lot of restaurants. You can actually see the Notre Dame cathedral on the mountain. There's a lot to see there. So much charming buildings to take pictures of. You don't need to pay for excursions. BTW, you can take the same shuttle bus to take you back to the port. You just need to come back to where you are dropped off by the bus. It comes every 20 minutes.
