    Growing up I've worked at a few bars, but never as a bartender. Actually it was always with my oldest brother. I was under 21 so I couldn't tend, but I loved learning the drinks, I LOVE these episodes, they add to me list of drinks to mix for my own self. I never got trained as a bartender and I wanted to learn.

    My first ever alcoholic drink was an Old Fashion"
    And to this day I still drink,but over the years I've become a bit picky on said cocktail. Because I've had it made with minimal effort,I've had it done the right way and the difference is like night and day!

      See, I'm the opposite: unless you're getting wayyy too "new fashioned" with it, these ingredients aren't ever going to get ruined by putting them together. Is a good Old Fashioned *really* good? Of course! But I can walk into an unknown bar and order one, and they'll know what it is and be able to make a cocktail that I know I'll be able to drink and enjoy.

    My favorite Old Fashioned recipe:
    2 ounces of rye (the whisky is up for you to decide)
    1 barspoon of simple syrup
    3 dashes of aromatic bitters (i use angustora)
    3 dashes of orange bitters
    Squeeze and orange peel to release the oils onto the drink once in a rocks glass, rim the glass with the peel, garnish with luxardo cherry and orange peel.
    Enjoy :)

    Sad to say there are a lot of bartenders who do not know how to make this very simple drink. I have been to places where they use a whole orange slice, add the cherry, and then muddle the fruit... No, just no....
    Also worth mentioning that this is a cocktail to be enjoyed SLOWLY. I actually prefer a bit of dilution in this drink. As the ice ments it changes the flavor profile over time. The cocktail starts out strong but finishes sweet.

    • @thingamajig1919
      @thingamajig1919 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      well, it is a different variation on it, for example, u will see that in the book "The Bar Guide" by Williams Sonoma, the fruit is muddled as well, releasing its juices and oils, its a different beast altogether but enjoyed by many including myself. But to each his own and as long you enjoy your drink, that's what matters.^^

    • @bill9989
      @bill9989 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I often make Old Fashioneds for several people at a time so it has to be done quickly. I use a graduated shaker (to measure, not to shake). I use simple syrup, bitters and a dash of orange liquor (triple sec), cherry and of course bourbon or rye. The triple sec is for when I don't have an orange, which is often. Everyone up for another? Done in two minutes. Oh and I freeze very large ice cubes, one per glass.

    • @Olordrin
      @Olordrin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      There are likely hundreds of variations to the Old Fashioned. All that matters is that you end up with a drink you enjoy. Purists just like to feel superior. They can't even say "I like the original better." It's "OMG HEATHEN HOW DARE YOU RUIN IT YOU HAVE NO TASTE." Not to say anyone here is an obnoxious purist, all I'm saying is drink what you enjoy.

    • @Olordrin
      @Olordrin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My favorite variation is the Emerald Old Fashioned. I also prefer using a sugar syrup to actual sugar. I'm not a fan of the grainy texture.
      2 oz Irish Whiskey
      1 barspoon Honey Syrup, 2:1
      1 barspoon Green Chartreuse
      1 dash absinthe (It's probably about a barspoon, maybe a little less)

    • @mrcesarm1031

      Well yeah it's a drink from before the war, drinking like that is less common each day, when i started drinking i expected every bar to know how to make classic cocktails, once i became a bartender i learned that people mostly order beer and if it's liquor it's just straight, with ice or jack and coke...

    IM sorry, great video, i love all the stuff modern rogue does and this is a great bartender from other videos i have seen, but i am going to be THAT GUY that has to say that putting soda water into an old fashioned is sacreligeous because the drink is older then soda water, and the marachino cherry. Now having that being said, even though the drink was made originally with rye, I actually prefer bourbon in my old fashioned, specifically a higher proof bourbon like Booker's or 1792 Full proof. Any full proof Bourbon that can stand up to the dilution is a solid choice. And in times of despair and im in a place with no bourbon or have run out, I find that scotch makes a decent old fashioned as well.

    • @ramencurry6672
      @ramencurry6672 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You’re not going to taste the soda water after it’s mixed unless if it’s some kind of water with a distinct strong taste. Adding soda water to a cocktail would be more akin to a 1930s or early/mid 20th century style approach so for many aficionados, this would be fine. Taste wise, you won’t be able to tell.

    Funny all the armchair bartenders getting mad, don drapers old fashion used soda water too and quite a bit. I actually like the chintzy ones you used to get in the 60s and some dive bars still do with an obnoxiously red cherry. It’s really a different drink, much sweeter, easier to drink, it does all the work for you, it’s great.

    2 oz. bourbon. 1/2-3/4 oz simple simple syrup, 3 dashes of angostura bitters, 3 dashes of orange bitters, all over ice stirred until properly until diluted. Then strained over an ice sphere and garnished with an orange peel. -My perfect old fashioned

    I'm from Wisconsin, I drink the Brandy Old Fashioned. That said, I use Jero Old Fashioned mix, brandy, my grandpa will add a little vermouth, and sour soda. I'm not claiming to be a bartender, I definitely am not, but it's light, it's tasty, and I like it. I also tried using ginger ale and bourbon instead (it's cheap bourbon in an expensive bottle) and that was a different taste but still good.

    Hey Brian and Jason! For your bumper for SquareSpace, what I'd like to see would be The Rogue's Journals; a blog of Modern Badassery for the Modern Rogue. It would be things that don't quite make the episodes, but you feel as though Rogues like us would enjoy. By the way, his splash page is amazing.

    I _generally_ disagree with the addition of soda water into old-fashioned cocktails, but it's worth noting that I take a shortcut and make my own simple syrup for my OF's, so that skips any needed dilution for the sugar and bitters. I liked the use of the orange peel though.

    If you like old fashioneds give this a try. It’s my favourite recipe by far and I created it by accident. Hope you try it and enjoy
    •dash of water
    •5 dashes Angostura bitters
    •2 tsp Cointreau or triple sec
    •1 tbsp simple syrup (if you don’t ha e any or don’t know how to make it just put sugar and water in a bottle and keep adding sugar until refusal, about 1/3 sugar to 2/3 water)
    •stir and add ice
    •2 oz rye whiskey (I prefer Wisers Deluxe, if you’ve never bought it it’s pretty reasonably priced, $40 Canadian.
    Stir again to mix and enjoy. Also side note it’s important you put no extra orange oils or peel in this drink as it will create a overpowering orange flavour, the Cointreau adds the perfect amount of flavour. Also like he said in the video hard clear ice is the best because it will melt slower. You can find at home videos on that on TH-cam, using a cooler in the freezer is probably the best and easiest way. Anyway hope you give it a try and enjoy.if you like it let me know, if you hate it then forget this comment exists.

    My personal favorite old fashioned recipe (since everyone is posting theirs) :
    1 Barspoon of cinnamon syrup,
    4 dashes of creole bitters,
    Two ounces of rye (I like wild turkey)
    A single ice cube,
    Stir,
    Flame an orange peel

    A classic old fashioned has bitters, some sugar and whiskey, some add ice, other don't, add a cherry and you're done. At least that's what I was taught, but then again, a whiskey sour has 100 different variants too lol
