Totally agree, rugby is non stop action, pretty much full on 40 mins each half. American football, all that stop start, have rest, have a drink, have a chat
I was attending an International Scouting Jamboree here in the UK, some Americans were playing touch Football, they invited me and my mates to join them had a great time for about half an hour then we challenged them to a game of 7 a side rugby, they lasted 10 minutes and refused to play Rugby with us anymore🤣
Actually when I was a scout (and I was also au rugby player) we played "sioule", a kinda medieval ancestor to rugby. There was one rule : no weapon. And that's it. You could kick you opponent in the nuts if you wanted. With or without the ball. No offside, nothing but a free for all to put the ball on some point.
Both games are rough but there are differences. Rugby players wear no pads but there are rules about tackling that are not present in American football making pads necessary. Also not only the guy with the ball gets hit

Quite simply rugby is the greatest man’s team sport there is. Explosive, brutal, exciting, passionate, proud, and a played for the most part by men with discipline who are good role models for young boys to follow. I started at 6 and loved it. It makes you tough, fit, and disciplined. Also has great fans who can have a drink and generally behave themselves!!
Rugby was invented in 1823 at Rugby School in England, U.K. common injuries in Rugby are loss of teeth, broken ribs, leg fractures, other bones, head injuries (far more than Boxing), the caps which you might see on some players are 'Scrum Caps' worn for 'Scrums' which is part of the game play, similar to a 'Scrimmage' in American Football, otherwise no protection is generally used except perhaps some supports from earlier injuries. There are two forms of the game, 'League' which has 13 players and 'Union' with 15 players. I hope that this helps a bit with the understanding of the game.
Do not tense up while hitting or being hit. It's bad for your health. Many of the hits in that video were illegal and some of the legal ones are now illegal. As an American that played gridiron for about a decade and then went on to play rugby for a few more decades I can tell you that all that equipment worn to 'protect' the players of the 'American game' just ends up being used as weapons.
Don't know a thing about NFL but I do know rugby & league and by the looks of those hit's in football NFL there's no way you can play that game with out the body armour your blocking your opponent with your whole body head included 😮😊
I was the opposite, started in rugby and played gridiron later. In my experience the hardest hits are about the same level - the difference is that you get them more often in gridiron. Also you get bruised and cut up worse in gridiron (now that rucking has been removed from rugby) due to copping a helmet or shoulder pad to a forearm or other unprotected part of the body. I think comparing them is silly really, they are different sports.
I played amateur level rugby in my teens, twenties and thirties. I've been concussed, knocked out, lost 7 teeth, had black eyes, bloody noses, cauliflower ears, sprains, twists and more bruises than I care to remember. I'm now 57 and I'd still love to be playing. I like the NFL but your players wouldn't last one training session with a pro rugby team all of whom play for wages a fraction of those paid by the NFL. Rugby is an amazing sport.
A lot of those rugby tackles would be considered a penalty and even a yellow/red card (10mins/permanently off the field respectively) , mostly tackling without the ball 6:20 using no arms like called a shoulder charge 7:25 high tackles which are tackles above the waist/spear tackles when you lift the player above the waist 6:35 / 7:09. Pretty much all the hits after 7:30 are all illegal tackles. Ironically all the rules regarding physical contact are only put in place for the players safety 😂
Just to clarify - he means "they would NOW be considered a penalty": most of these tackles were completely legal *at the time* - which is of course why hits like this happened so often.

I’m 57 now but I started playing at 5 years old. It’s a winter sport and we use to play in bare feet in the frost. We just see it as a normal sport. Some of those hits were illegal and would be penalised or player sent off for 10 minutes. But I can only say that both these codes you saw are as close to being gladiators without killing each other. There were actually two codes of footy in these clips. 1) Rugby Union 2) Rugby League All though similar they are entirely different. You have to watch both to understand. Watch New Zealand Warriors highlights. And then watch New Zealand All Blacks Rugby Team. I played both codes in my time and loved every moment. No injuries apart from the odd dislocated finger or a few sprig marks from being rucked by a boot or two. But I enjoyed the full contact, the comraderie and the competing against your rivals.
The only protection rugby players may wear is a mouth guard. It doesn't prevent you from losing your teeth, it just makes it easier to find them. This said most of the vicious tackles from the older footage are now illegal, as you can see the ref pulling the red card (which means the exclusion of the guilty player for the rest of the match, his team then playing with one less man) in newer matches. Also in rugby the rules are called laws and you're not allowed to discuss the referee's decision unless you want to be penalised too.
Actually, some rugby players wear a protective sort of shirt with small "foam" pads on the body parts that freaquently receive loads of pontentially violent hits, like the shoulders
Love the Reactions! Yeah, Rugby players hit Hard! And the funny thing is; Rugby is not only Older than American Football...American Football was based off of Rugby.
My very first time playing I was about 10. My mate got spun around and his head knocked my front tooth into the top of mouth. Gum shields were mandatory after that. We played this school and our weedest kid saved us. By stopping a boy who was huge compared to him from going across the line on the last play of the game. Even our softest lads are harder than American Football players.
Played rugby from 11 until mid 20s.Came out of retirement at 40 to play for the over 35s team.Broke my nose a few times and a couple of fingers.Cracked a rib too.But no matter how hard you hit or fought the opposition, you had a pint with them after the game
I read a statistic ages ago, (obviously for people who have played NFL for a number of years) that something like 66% of ex-NFL players, when they retire, have permanent injuries. Even with all their padding. Guessing there would gave to be a statistic for ex-league/Union players... p.s.. Rugby league and rugby union are similar, but still different games.
"hasanyone passed away from rugby?" yeah i know a schoolboy was killed when a ball hit his chest, it was the exact same injury that demar hamlin suffered last year.
The lift tackles that go past 90 degrees are actually illegal and hitting with no arms in a tackle like shoulder charging. And yes hits like this happen at all ages. We start young. But the objective is to hit hard but not to actually hurt the other players.
We have strict rules on playing rugby at school these days in the UK (as do other countries). Tackling is not allowed until Under 9s and it must be around waist height and no 'fending' (hand offs, etc.). Contested scrums (with 6 scrummagers) are not allowed until Under 13s and full scrums at under 14s, fully-contested lineouts with lifting are permitted at under 16s.
Those are some of the worse hits, many of them are illegal. Yes, people go to the hospital and neck and back injuries. Watch. Couple of games, the 6 Nations Tournament is currently happening
My husband was a rugby player, he broke many bones especially collar bones and his nose. Never stopped him going back for another game😂 Protection is a gum shield and tape for the ears.
We much like you americas start playing rugby from a young age like 6 to 7 and our bodies become accustomed to the hard hits and the tackles I know it looks like we throw our selfs at each other but we are safer than the NFL players because we don’t wear helmets and pads and like many other sports there have been deaths but to be honest in all the years I’ve played I think I’ve heard of one which was when I was in my early twenties and I’m 57 now so that’s not that bad. Great reaction though just the look of sheer terror on your face is priceless
My brother was a children's coach so both my son and daughter learnt alongside his son and all the other kids. My daughter gave up playing when she left school at 18. My son stopped playing regularly when he left school but continued with a local team. He gave up after he had to have surgery on his shoulder as he tended to dislocate his arm and he was advised not to continue as there was only so many times they could repair him.
I’ve seen tons of injuries in RUGBY UNION and LEAGUE……back and neck breaks…..other limbs broken….head wounds…body wounds…..broken everything….yet we still PLAY on……..amongst all the brutality - theres beauty in this game and we coming back for more call us crazy but we love this game 🔥🔥🔥
NFL generally consists of about 30s of action followed by a long pause. Rugby can go on for several minutes of continuous play, after which there is a pause whilst limbs and heads which have come loose are reattached and then the game can restart. Incidentally, I played rugby for about 7 years and the only real injury I got was a minor spinal injury when a scrum collapsed (I was a flanker pressed into action as a prop) but I was advised to quit the game. I then took up field hockey and I got many, many more injuries playing that. I also played cricket and broke nearly every finger, but never missed a match. I even played half a season with a pot on my wrist.
as a scrawny lad that played rugby up until about 14, its all about completely committing to the tackle. im about as skinny as it comes and id consistently be bringing down guys twice my size just by committing fully to the tackle and latching on to squeeze in around their ankles. only time you get hurt is when somebody accidentally steps on ur head.
I can't speak for current statistics, but a few years ago the fatality rate in UK was 4-5 per season, but most of those were cardiac. Also, a lot of the hits in this video are illegal. The game tends to be less open these days as well, but there are still some HUGE hits and the guys are even bigger.
Rugby is a tough sport but when you play from the age of 8-9 you become conditioned to the physicality of it. You asked if anyone has never got up after a hit. Well that happened to me during a match at school when I was 18 and playing for the school first team against a rival school. I was playing fullback (last line of defence) and their biggest guy was charging towards me. His knee hit my chin and knocked me out cold. I remember a weird kind of floating feeling as I was being stretchered off the field and coming to, and my team mates rallied around me to say that somehow I'd managed to tackle him so he didn't score. Had to spend the night in hospital for further observation for concussion, but I was fine a couple of days afterwards. I did win my school rugby colours after that match which is an award given to those who excel at a sport, and which allowed me to wear a tie of a different design than the rest of the kids at school.
Hi Chris,my name's IAN,yeah no pads, some rules have been changed, you can't pick a player up and slam them, some players seem to get brain trouble later in life, football is looking into how many times you can head the ball in a game because of brain problems,if your heading or getting slammed something will go wrong,
The rugby World Cup is Sept - Oct this year, make sure you mark it in your calendar for the best teams hitting hard and taking no prisoners in each and every game.
Only one off hand I can think of is a guy that played for Ivory Coast in the 1995 Rugby World Cup got paralyzed after a dump/spear tackle. (Jerry Collins was a master of the spear tackle as well as Brian "The Chiropractor" Lima)
i only played rugby a few times in school, but literally the first thing you are taught is how to tackle and what is and isnt a legal tackle. the thing with the NFL is they have refused to put clear rules in place about tackling and would rather dress players up and have ugly collisions. i could be wrong but i think the only rules are no tackles below the knee and dont lower your head, THATS IT???
Torn ear, broken nose, cracked rib a concussion plus various sprains, abrasions and contusions that was in grades 6 and 7. Never lost the situational awareness . Proved useful more than once. Cheers.

I've watched rugby for years and the most injuries of seen is concussion
They're called men and their muscles are their padding. There's no cottonwool on real men. How lucky are we females here.
1) Rugby Union
2) Rugby League
All though similar they are entirely different.
It justmakesit easier to find them 😂😂
Growing up in the UK we played this from6 to16
Love the Reactions! Yeah, Rugby players hit Hard! And the funny thing is; Rugby is not only Older than American Football...American Football was based off of Rugby.
It was 'based ON rugby'. Rugby was common feature in 19th century North American in schools and colleges.
We played 3 matches in one day then we still played a friendly againts each other after the 3rd match
Rugby
This is pretty standard stuff. These are tough guys
No protection gear at all , react to rugby is awesome you'll love it
Dont see americans getting cauliflower ears now do you
Yes we the rest of the world and we ABSOLUTELY mad about rugby!?😅
They do have protection its called a mouthguard lol
My very first time playing I was about 10. My mate got spun around and his head knocked my front tooth into the top of mouth. Gum shields were mandatory after that. We played this school and our weedest kid saved us. By stopping a boy who was huge compared to him from going across the line on the last play of the game. Even our softest lads are harder than American Football players.
Played second row from the age of 13 years old ..... don't need pads, just need to be as hard as a coffin nail ! 😂😂
Played rugby from 11 until mid 20s.Came out of retirement at 40 to play for the over 35s team.Broke my nose a few times and a couple of fingers.Cracked a rib too.But no matter how hard you hit or fought the opposition, you had a pint with them after the game
Rugby been around over 100 years now
I've broken my arm twice in school rugby 😂
I read a statistic ages ago, (obviously for people who have played NFL for a number of years) that something like 66% of ex-NFL players, when they retire, have permanent injuries.
Even with all their padding.
Guessing there would gave to be a statistic for ex-league/Union players...
p.s.. Rugby league and rugby union are similar, but still different games.
We play hard and then have a few beers.
Watch some game play, its more fast passed than american football because the play doesnt stop after tackling
Now watch a rugby skills video. This isn't just a thug rumble.
Those are some of the worse hits, many of them are illegal. Yes, people go to the hospital and neck and back injuries. Watch. Couple of games, the 6 Nations Tournament is currently happening
Lots of red card tackles on show here.
@@whattiler5102 so true, a bunch of illegal tackels
If you want to get properly into rugby I will teach you everything you need to know Chris. I loved this reaction - big love from England
This is real men 😍😍
My brother was a children's coach so both my son and daughter learnt alongside his son and all the other kids. My daughter gave up playing when she left school at 18. My son stopped playing regularly when he left school but continued with a local team. He gave up after he had to have surgery on his shoulder as he tended to dislocate his arm and he was advised not to continue as there was only so many times they could repair him.
I’ve seen tons of injuries in RUGBY UNION and LEAGUE……back and neck breaks…..other limbs broken….head wounds…body wounds…..broken everything….yet we still PLAY on……..amongst all the brutality - theres beauty in this game and we coming back for more
call us crazy but we love this game 🔥🔥🔥
If you don’t hit the other team hard, they’ll run over you.
Just got into rugby. Very entertaining .
They don’t wear all them sissy pads and helmets.😂😂😂😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤
You should check out Rugby Hits until I collapse . Awesome trust me
I'm from New Zealand rugby is life we often say American football is like ruby but you stop when your tackled and you wear pillows 😂
as a scrawny lad that played rugby up until about 14, its all about completely committing to the tackle. im about as skinny as it comes and id consistently be bringing down guys twice my size just by committing fully to the tackle and latching on to squeeze in around their ankles. only time you get hurt is when somebody accidentally steps on ur head.
I can't speak for current statistics, but a few years ago the fatality rate in UK was 4-5 per season, but most of those were cardiac. Also, a lot of the hits in this video are illegal. The game tends to be less open these days as well, but there are still some HUGE hits and the guys are even bigger.
You should check out a few games man, I think you would enjoy it. But it's not just brutality, some of the guys (and women) have some serious skills.
I'm 5'9" and played fly half/standoff at 175 pounds. I f*ckin loved it!
Wearing pads and a helmet to play a field game is kinda weak. Sorry America, but that's the truth.
Max Brito (dude that got paralyzed)
Yes players have died but not many. They just get back up and carry on. ❤
Hopefully not the dead ones😁
i only played rugby a few times in school, but literally the first thing you are taught is how to tackle and what is and isnt a legal tackle. the thing with the NFL is they have refused to put clear rules in place about tackling and would rather dress players up and have ugly collisions. i could be wrong but i think the only rules are no tackles below the knee and dont lower your head, THATS IT???
Iv'e broken my collarbone, 8 ribs and 3 fingers pplaying rugby, it's a tough sport but it makes you tougher
Torn ear, broken nose, cracked rib a concussion plus various sprains, abrasions and contusions that was in grades 6 and 7. Never lost the situational awareness . Proved useful more than once. Cheers.
@@2l84t Ouch! I've never played American Football but heard conflicting stories on whether the extra padding makes people go harder thus getting more injuries or it just a coincidence
I use to be a proffesional rugby player, I have broken my leg, arm, hand twice, jaw, and nose (12 times), color bone and ribs 5 times. It is a brutal sport and the touchest sport in the world.
They start them early. My nephews were 8 when they started playing.
there have been people who died playing rugby, there was a schoolboy last year who unfortunately passed due to a head injury
