    I love your line of thought - make and not use - isn't that what it is all about - turning something useless into something useful - we may not use it right away but it is there is we want to or if we want to give it away to someone who does not create like we do but likes the style. Also like the thought - don't make it too hard, just take it as it is and have fun. Thanks so much for putting things into perspective and letting me know that I am not the only one who thinks along these lines. xox

    This looks like so much fun! I think I'm going to journal with mine but I am also going to collage and sketch with it. I love sketching and this might be a fun way to practice! Now, I realize that junk mail can truly be a treasure! Thanks for sharing!

    What a great idea! This would be really great for all those things you pick up when you go on a trip and you bring home then they end up in a box or a draw! I need to go through some of my old stuff I have collected from years past and do something like this with all them. Much better than sitting in a box! This way they can be looked at!

    This is interesting. I have been using blank traveler's notebooks for event notes, and picked up some of those smashbook stickers and notes to add to them. A junk journal that fits in a TN would be great for this purpose.

    That's perfect way to use those glossy pages and especially the ones you order from pretty cities :) I live glow you bound it and kept the envelopes full length against the signature binding. And I love the canvas scrapbook sheet cover...all great ideas.

    I can imagine you get asked that A LOT. It just goes to show you how we can box ourselves into ideas about something, myself VERY much included. It's hard to train your brain to 'think outside the box'.(Such an overused cliche of a phrase that took me years to really understand.) It takes practice and more practice to loosen that inner critic clamp that shuts down other ideas but it's such a wonderful journey. That for me, is what creating art is about. Many people I talk about this to don't understand that I am not super invested in the final product but more into the process itself. They just look at be, head cocked to the side, with that same expression a dog gives you when it hears a funny noise. Keep illuminating the way for those of us that want to break out of that mold of 'stick square peg in square hole, stick round peg in round hole. This probably makes no sense whatsoever LOL

    I'm not judging...terrific idea to stop waste in landfills and useful as well. I draw/paint 'test' pieces of art on envelopes and then find the envelope is now fine art. :) Thanks for sharing.

    Good seeing how you use your junk mail journals. I love making these. With glossy pages what I sometimes do is rub some sandpaper over them and put a light coat of gesso on. I usually find I can then write on top of that. But I have a number of these that sit and are not used. The fun was in making them and if I do need to use one then I've got a few to choose from :)

    great video! You always see video's of how to make a junkjournal or a travel journal etc. But you hardly ever get to see how they are used! I'm going on a little trip next week, and I'm bringing a junk journal with me!! Thanks for sharing :)
    In your Vegas traveljournal you put lots of receipts. Won't they fade??
    Hugs from Holland!

    • @ShannonGreen
      @ShannonGreen  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Karin's Corner Some of the receipts will likely fade or discolor over time but that's okay. They're not super important mementos.

    I've liked this video, even though I have no idea what i'm looking at.....I'm from England, i'm not sure we do this here, dunno. What is the point though?

    • @ShannonGreen
      @ShannonGreen  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Journals serve different purposes for different people. Some write in them, some collect little bits and thoughts from their day, some do art in them, etc. Junk journals serve the same purpose, they're just made from upcycled materials.

    • @lyllydd
      @lyllydd 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are some great art journaling and junk journal videos from English crafters out there. Check Dyan Ravely, I think Docrafts have some, and there are lots of others.

  • @mysummertouch
    @mysummertouch 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    here is a real hard question: we don't get junk mail here, as well as free handouts at stores, how I make a junk journal without a junk mail???

    • @ShannonGreen
      @ShannonGreen  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +mysummertouch That's a really good question! Junk journals are intended to be made from whatever you have on hand so start there. Look at food packaging...empty boxes, cartons, bags, etc. You may not get junk mail but you probably get regular mail so you could save the envelopes or inserts that you might otherwise throw away. Think about about small paper bags from the grocery store, bakery, pharmacy, fast food restaurants, etc. Use pages from magazines or old books. You can also use scraps of scrapbook paper, gelli prints, painted papers, etc. I've used pages from some of my daughters old notebooks from school. Hope that gives you some ideas :)
