I have been using the Sawyer for donkeys! It’s been so reliable, I won’t go without it anymore. Water storage and carrying is a real nuisance sometimes, never a real problem here in the U.K. but just so bulky and heavy. I do try to ride light with just one bottle of water at times, then load up for a night camp. Of course camping near a mountain river is the ideal, but not always possible. Your vid is just so informative , I do enjoy them. Thank you.
the mesh bag the sawyer squeeze comes in can be used to hang a water bladder upside down, and you can use the sawyer like a gravity filter. Its slow, but you can set it up when you're not doing anything, and it can save you a little time and hassle

So I liked this and I'm glad your bringing a cook system. This is the reason. In the unlikely event your Sawyer fails. You have a water purification backup. I would say that if you want redundancy for fire, bring a light my fire ferro rod. You can light your stove and you can always start an emergency fire and it isn't much weight. Just a thought. Do with it what you like. I'm not totally ultralight just because I like to have some small redundancies. I'm learning a lot from you and keep it up!
I picked up a light weight spork today and tried it on lunch today and it worked out well. I have the shorter handle and wider mouth one so unfortunately you will have a clear advantage if we ever have a spork fencing duel.

Rod Theer I have a CNOC Vecto too and I love it, but I can't get over the taste of the water. I've soaked it in soapy water, scrubbed it several times, but no success. Any recommendations?
I've switched from the BV500 to the BV450 when I switched to a different pack, and I can get about 20,000 calories in the 450. That's a mixture of dehydrated foods, oatmeal, candy bars, electrolyte mixes, energy bars, and some protein shake mixes that I put together from protein powder and Nido at home.

Make sure that you get an extra "O" ring for the BRS. Mine failed during snowstorm number 1. I was able to get it to work by putting Neosporin on the gasket and leaving the stove screwed on the cannister, but I no longer recommend this stove for a long hike for this reason alone. I wish I would have paid the extra $ and bought the Olicamp ion instead.
Great review , just one quick question , why dose the Bear Container have holes in that will send stored food smells to the open air for bears and critters to smell and find ? Why not a complete sealed container ??
I can’t remember. Have you tried the Be Free? I got one a while back and really like it for the flow rate. The problem is the thread size and that’s why I think everyone hasn’t jumped over yet. You should look into Ursac for your bear canister. Better than clunky plastic and you can just use it as a normal bear bag instead of adding gear or swapping out.

Are you taking fuel from the start, or just picking it up if you feel the need? One of those small canisters wouldn't add THAT much weight, and still give you the option of hot coffee or a meal.
Darwin- is the PCT mapped out with respect to water well enough that you would never have to dry camp? They say at least a gallon of water per person per day in the desert. That's like 7.5 liters
You mention the Sawyer Squeeze Mini often, but have you used the Micro? I heard the flow rate is much better than the mini, but the size is better than the regular. Best of both worlds?

I've been debating whether to purchase the Saywer Squeeze and CNOC bag, or to go with the BeFree and Hydrapak. The concept of the BeFree appeals to me a little more than the Sawyer, but I'm concerned that the super fast flow rate of the BeFree will quickly diminish and not last as long or work as well as the Sawyer. Any thoughts?

hmm I used mine for my AT thru hike and it worked fine with the Sawyer Squeeze. The first generation Vecto's all leaked from the top slider but the second generation seem perfect. I hiked with the first generation and didn't want to fill it up with water and throw it in my pack for fear of leaks, but as a dirty water filtering bag it was perfect.
Is the Zpack food storage bag animal proof meaning can they smell the food through it? And if it is, why do you have to hang it? Why not leave it in your pack?

I can see the draw $$ of the BRS stove. However, the quality control is bad and over half fail. I've owned two, both broke during use. They are terrible in the wind, so you'll need a wind break of sorts. The simmer control isn't precise and do you notice how close the flame is to the fuel? no thanks. I carry a Soto Amicus stove for an extra ounce and piece of mind. Has been perfect 44 nights tested, thusfar. When you go ultralight try not to skimp on your shelter, sleeping bag or quilt, or your stove. It's not a competition, just sound advice.
Tailslol In most if not all of California they are considered an open flame since you can’t shut them off instantly which means they are banned since in a lot of places you can’t have fires. Which kinda sucks but at the same time I believe is for the best. I live in SoCal and we are still in drought and there’s been many bad fires here. Most recently we had the Woolsey fire which killed a lot of people. They are still finding bodies and trying to identify remains. Still a lot of people missing, which is really sad and the news basically has stopped covering it.

Campo is not in a desert, all the way through descending Mount Lauguna, is not desert. You walk across proper desert briefly, in Anza Borrego, until you climb to Warner Springs, which... is not desert. Then you go to all the way to San Jacinto, in chaparral-covered foothills, and oak and pine covered mountains. Only after you drop down to the 74 do you cross a significant amount of actual desert. "Desert" is not a subjective term. Because someplace is less wooded, or mountainous, or lush than another doesn't make it a desert.

G'day The Hillbilly Homestead. Just go to Coles or Woolies. Any water/mineral water bottle that is 75-78mm in diameter is the same as a SmartWater bottle. They also fit in the bottle cage on your bike.
Beth Ratkewicz, no need to in N.America, filtering with the Sawyer Mini removes anything of concern. Maybe in other (hot) countries where virii can survive in water courses, you would take further steps.
Never have left it before but did forget where exactly we hung it for a few minutes. We got into camp really late and it was dark. Walking around trying to find a good spot and then crashing in the tent. Thought it was in one direction but it was more to the left. Not super far off but still was hunting for it for just a couple of minutes. That’s why I use a bright orange dry bag for food right now. Basically impossible to lose it
I'd really like to know what both of those shoulder pouches are. I have the exact same backpack and I've been debating whether or not I want shoulder pouches.
The zpacks shoulder pouch is great but I'd prioritize the belt pouches first and then determine if you need a shoulder pouch. The belt pouches are indispensable, imo.

Also picked up a couple of cuben fiber drybags. I like that they are translucent and can see what is inside of each of them.

There aren't many bears in the desert. What some backpackers do is use an odor-proof Opsak inside their food bag and sleep with it

That cnoc vecto does not work with a filter. I tried it and the plastic cap threads are not stiff enough.

G'day The Hillbilly Homestead. Just go to Coles or Woolies. Any water/mineral water bottle that is 75-78mm in diameter is the same as a SmartWater bottle. They also fit in the bottle cage on your bike.

Let me get this straight. You only filter your water even in the desert? What about diseases? Doncha need to boil the water too to be safe?
Beth Ratkewicz, no need to in N.America, filtering with the Sawyer Mini removes anything of concern. Maybe in other (hot) countries where virii can survive in water courses, you would take further steps.

Never have left it before but did forget where exactly we hung it for a few minutes. We got into camp really late and it was dark. Walking around trying to find a good spot and then crashing in the tent. Thought it was in one direction but it was more to the left. Not super far off but still was hunting for it for just a couple of minutes. That’s why I use a bright orange dry bag for food right now. Basically impossible to lose it

The Z-Packs and the ULA (don’t know about others) have elastic straps the conch around the neck and mid-way around the bottle. It’s very convenient.

I'd really like to know what both of those shoulder pouches are. I have the exact same backpack and I've been debating whether or not I want shoulder pouches.
The zpacks shoulder pouch is great but I'd prioritize the belt pouches first and then determine if you need a shoulder pouch. The belt pouches are indispensable, imo.

Rod Theer Looks Ike an Essentia water sport bottle flip top. You can get them at 7 Eleven and Whole Foods on the 750ml? high alkaline sport waters. These black flip tops are much more durable than the smart water flip tops.

How much does the water system weigh with water inside?
adrian carrillo 2 pounds roughly per liter. plus he weighed his gear at 10.4 oz. so at full carrying capacity 10 lbs and 10.4 oz give or take.
So even with a base weight of say 10lbs, you add water and food that's another at least 15lbs, which means your overall weight on your back is 25lbs.
