Been slowly showing my mom who is 58, who always told me to turn off/turn down my rap music growing up, certain songs and asked her to really listen to the lyrics and rhythm ~15 years later. She still much prefers classic/acid rock and singers like Natalie Merchant, but she now understands and appreciates what hip hop is/can be. She's heard a few songs and teared up saying "I never knew how meaningful these songs could actually be." I think a lot of the older generations hear aggressive lyrics/deliveries, no traditional instruments being played live, think it's all about terrible, violent/vulgar topics, and don't actually listen to how deep and amazing the genre can be. She's heard a few of my songs (I haven't written or recorded in years) and was surprised how personal and beautiful the lyrics were. I only uploaded one random small freestyle that was just lyrical miracle spiritual back when I was 19, and honestly it's not worth listening to. It's terribly mixed and recorded.
For the record, this song was released Jan. 2020. He wrote it shortly after finding out his father died, so while it wasn't Shady, it was just Marshall bringing light to how badly his dad screwed him over.
Yeah this is showing how Shady is basically the caricature of the rage in Marshall. This is Marshall showing genuine and deserved anger and lashing out at his father for never being there for him, and how he'll never forgive him for that. This isn't Shady. This is Marshall showing what anger and events in his life helped him create the Slim Shady persona. Shady as a persona I think helped him escape the pain of reality, like he did with comics. Shady is his comic book villain side where he can say crazy shit to vent and joke about actual anger lying underneath. This is the honest rage of Marshall.

When Em got famous his dad showed up on the news, suddenly "claiming his son", holding his baby pictures and saying how proud he was of him. By then Em wanted nothing to do with him. He passed in either 2018 or 2019 and Marshall recorded this song. It gives kind of these "Cleanin' Out My Closet" vibes, since the subject is basically the same. D'Angelo Bailey was Eminem's bully back in school. He used to beat Eminem up so bad, that Eminem fell into a coma for two weeks after the beatdown. Eminem's mother tried to sue the school, but unfortunately I don't know why she didn't do it. In 1999, on the Slim Shady LP there was a song called "Brain Damage" in which he talks about his D'Angelo. D'Angelo Bailey sued Marshall in 2001, but as you could expect not only did he lose the case, but also got himself to be made fun of. I hope I could help. The line that sticks with me the most is when he mentions where his dad was when DiAngelo beat him into a coma, it's like at one stage he actually thought of his dad as someone who possibly could be there to save him, like a dad should, instead of this image he portrayed that he's always hated his dad his entire life, like there was a stage in his life he didn't entirely hate him

I'm 32 and I can still remember the day I heard "My name is" by Eminem on the radio when I was 9 years old. Funny how one artist can keep you interested in their music for over 2 decades.
As someone without a dad, Eminem's feelings speak to me. People say the dad did care but I feel just like Eminem. In childhood u need both parents and missing one or both cuz they walked out to start a new family, you begin to feel unwanted and getting in relationships u end up being afraid of people leaving so u will try to save it even if it's toxic. Then when your parent wants u back when u are grown up and able to move on you are pissed cuz u thought there was something wrong with u and thats why they didnt want you. It's not fair, not when u learn to rely on yourself. Not when u did everything to keep them and they didnt try. Not when u cried for them to come back. Those wounds stay fresh. It also affects the other parent. Both Eminem and I have blamed our mothers but they only could do so much without having someone else there to help. Trauma can make you into the people who hurt you or they can teach you to be better. Eminem is an example of overcoming trauma.

Seriously, Em's bars in this are insanely good, and honestly, I enjoy this one so much because my mother abused the shit out of me as a kid. Basically, every kiss felt like a down payment on a punch to the face from the time I was 8 until I fought back at 16 and made her realize that I could do some damage in return. Been no contact with her now for 6 years and have enjoyed the silence ever since; she is a horrible human being and I can absolutely see where Em is coming from. Hey Larry, I hope you can see this. So this song is from his last album, I believe and the last 2 albums have been a mix of Eminem and Shady. Because when he got backlash from the album Relapse being pretty terrible (he admitted himself) he cleaned his act up and became Marshall and his rap changed from controversial, silly and somewhat offensive to having a lot more word play and having more of an at peace feeling behind it. But then when people asked him to have an opinion on stuff happening in thr world he brought out revival which had some good songs but it got hit hard by media for him being against Trump and again having some controversial opinions. A lot of people where taking shots at him which really pissed him off. Which prompted him to surprise release the album Kamakize by, which is a mix of Eminem/Marshall and Shady. He has the angry passion of Shady but the insane word play than he turned to when he first dropped the Shady identity. I would suggest listening to Premonition(which is the starting of his album and really sets the tone of it) then Fall which is a song where he hits back at a bunch of people who were taking shots at him. As well I would suggest Not afraid which was a major hit from Recovery Album and that was the first big switch from Shady to Marshall.
I should also say I'm very happy to see you reaching to leaving Heaven, this song is one of my top 5 favorites. An just a small FYI I'm in Eminems top 1% listeners on Spotify haha I'm obsessed.
Too bad people hated Relapse, to me it’s a masterpiece. My 2nd favourite Eminem album for sure. It has so many classic songs on it; Beautiful, Crack a Bottle, My Darling, Careful What You Wish For, Deja Vu, 3 a.m., etc.
I've had my ups and downs. I do like opera and a few other genres. I do rapping to release tension due to my schizophrenia, depression and anxiety. He has alot of music. Eminem during a period taught me to keep fighting even when shit hits the fan. When he is at a low, I felt that. I was that. Consistently beaten and abused and "triggered" which the word was important to understand trauma and not overreaction. Eminem just cut loose on everyone. No one equally will escape it when he fights back or even speaks beautifully with tracks that anyone will play. Heck, his pen is just fucking amazing. Sure, he is white but he is a rapper. That is all that matters. An artist with his pen and thoughts and massive way of really digging into someone through words is impressive. Unless you go through all of his story and discography, you will only see a small portion of what he contributed to the world and hip hop as a whole. Love him or hate him, can't deny his skill and straight up savagery

This is no Slim Shady, this is Marshall Mathers, pure and simple. At least as I understand it, its Marshall when hes talking like this, straight up with minimum schemes and doubles (for his standarts at least) and telling some real intimate personal story (like songs about his kids), its Eminem when it is at its most artistic and technical with bars and triples (like Alfreds Theme, Rap God, Darkness etc.) and its Slim Shady when hes just going off berseker style with battle raps aiming at the whole universe... but then again most of his songs combine all those elements in some measure, and through them all shines the infinite light of some higher power.

Saw him live in 2018 in a crowd of about 80.000 people.. I feel blessed having seen this legend! For me Eminems Music helped me when I was a kid and my father fell into alcoholism.. he never recovered and I also lost him a couple of years ago.. I feel you man. In childhood u need both parents and missing one or both cuz they walked out to start a new family, you begin to feel unwanted and getting in relationships u end up being afraid of people leaving so u will try to save it even if it's toxic. Then when your parent wants u back when u are grown up and able to move on you are pissed cuz u thought there was something wrong with u and thats why they didnt want you. It's not fair, not when u learn to rely on yourself. Not when u did everything to keep them and they didnt try. Not when u cried for them to come back. Those wounds stay fresh. It also affects the other parent. Both Eminem and I have blamed our mothers but they only could do so much without having someone else there to help. Trauma can make you into the people who hurt you or they can teach you to be better. Eminem is an example of overcoming trauma.

you might have noticed the reference to someone named "de'angelo" in the song. de'angelo bailey was one of eminem's childhood bullies. he beat up em so bad in the bathroom at school that it forced him into a coma. after he woke up he had to relearn how to walk and talk again, he must've been 10 maybe younger. eminem went on to write a song about it on his first mainstream album "the slim shady lp" (1999). the song is called 'brain damage".

Yes! Been waiting so long for you to do this one; it's SO SO SO GOOD! Seriously, Em's bars in this are insanely good, and honestly, I enjoy this one so much because my mother abused the shit out of me as a kid. Basically, every kiss felt like a down payment on a punch to the face from the time I was 8 until I fought back at 16 and made her realize that I could do some damage in return.
Been no contact with her now for 6 years and have enjoyed the silence ever since; she is a horrible human being and I can absolutely see where Em is coming from. I'd go to Hell just to kick her ass, too, if I hadn't already done it as a teenager.

So this song is from his last album, I believe and the last 2 albums have been a mix of Eminem and Shady. Because when he got backlash from the album Relapse being pretty terrible (he admitted himself) he cleaned his act up and became Marshall and his rap changed from controversial, silly and somewhat offensive to having a lot more word play and having more of an at peace feeling behind it. But then when people asked him to have an opinion on stuff happening in thr world he brought out revival which had some good songs but it got hit hard by media for him being against Trump and again having some controversial opinions.
A lot of people where taking shots at him which really pissed him off.
Which prompted him to surprise release the album Kamakize by, which is a mix of Eminem/Marshall and Shady. He has the angry passion of Shady but the insane word play than he turned to when he first dropped the Shady identity.
I would suggest listening to Premonition(which is the starting of his album and really sets the tone of it) then Fall which is a song where he hits back at a bunch of people who were taking shots at him.
As well I would suggest Not afraid which was a major hit from Recovery Album and that was the first big switch from Shady to Marshall.
I should also say I'm very happy to see you reaching to leaving Heaven, this song is one of my top 5 favorites.

I've had my ups and downs. I do like opera and a few other genres. I do rapping to release tension due to my schizophrenia, depression and anxiety. He has alot of music. Eminem during a period taught me to keep fighting even when shit hits the fan. When he is at a low, I felt that. I was that. Consistently beaten and abused and "triggered" which the word was important to understand trauma and not overreaction. Eminem just cut loose on everyone. No one equally will escape it when he fights back or even speaks beautifully with tracks that anyone will play. Heck, his pen is just fucking amazing. Sure, he is white but he is a rapper. That is all that matters. An artist with his pen and thoughts and massive way of really digging into someone through words is impressive. Unless you go through all of his story and discography, you will only see a small portion of what he contributed to the world and hip hop as a whole. Love him or hate him, can't deny his skill and straight up savagery

Some context. Eminem’s father disappeared when he was a baby, he tried to show back up when Eminem became famous. His dad did an interview and held up baby pictures as if he was so proud of him like he had anything to do with it. But em is saying if he was so proud why did he leave? So truly f*ck him. It makes total sense.

Eminem would appreciate your reactions to all of these songs because it really is made for adults to understand, but mostly kids listen to it. Now that he’s a grown adult he has gotten more deep. These are scars he’s had for many years.

A little over 20 yrs....maybe you wouldn't have been ready earlier! Right now your a little older & able to appreciate what Eminem does with his pen! 😁 He has ..In my opinion....become an expert in his craft! No one comes close to what he can do! The way he constructs the words, the way he says them, the way he switches his flow so many times in one song! He wrote to his father several times as a teenager and every one of them were sent back to him unopened!!! It wasn't until he became famous did his father contact him!! This man can tell a story through song better than anyone I have ever listened to!!! Elvis used to put so much feeling into a song.....you felt it to! Not saying that one is like the other or better than the other! Eminem does remind me of Elvis though. They both have something about them that comes through & touches people! My Dad was consumed by alcohol as well. But never did he once lay a finger on me, my sisters or my mom. He kept all the pain inside.. we lost him to cancer. May his soul rest in peace. There’s still a lot of things left unsaid between us. So this song resonates with me on so many levels.

This is no Slim Shady, this is Marshall Mathers, pure and simple. At least as I understand it, its Marshall when hes talking like this, straight up with minimum schemes and doubles (for his standarts at least) and telling some real intimate personal story (like songs about his kids), its Eminem when it is at its most artistic and technical with bars and triples (like Alfreds Theme, Rap God, Darkness etc.) and its Slim Shady when hes just going off berseker style with battle raps aiming at the whole universe... but then again most of his songs combine all those elements in some measure, and through them all shines the infinite light of some higher power.

Saw him live in 2018 in a crowd of about 80.000 people.. I feel blessed having seen this legend! For me Eminems Music helped me when I was a kid and my father fell into alcoholism.. he never recovered and I also lost him a couple of years ago.. I feel you man.
