  • In this video we look at replacing the rear brake shoes and drums on a 2004 Fiat punto. The process is largely the same for most vehicles with rear drum brakes.
    We no longer keep any fiat vehicles, therefore any new videos come from footage taken a few years ago. Thanks for all your support, however at the current time there is no intention to make any new videos.

    Automatic brake adjuster...the most important part of the procedure is not covered.

    No need to bleed the brake fluid for this job on the rear drums?

    • @PuntoHowto
      @PuntoHowto  16 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      No, only need to bleed the brakes if there is air in the system. No air so no need to bleed them.

    Great Video, Congratulations! 👍👌 Are the Grande Punto's Drum Brakes the Same as These? 🤔

      Pretty much the same, one set of drum brakes is much like any other.

    Always apply copper grease to the contact points that the shoes rub against the back plate...no more squeaky brakes and they do feel so much smoother.

    • @qwertyasdfghjkl9604
      @qwertyasdfghjkl9604 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Why copper in particular? What's so special about it? I will answer: Nothing.
      There are other lubricants suitable for this job.

      @@qwertyasdfghjkl9604 not so, copper grease never dries, is antiseize, stops squeels and does not run off. One of the main jobs it does is braking systems. It was designed for brakes.

    It's a lot less fiddly if you take the hub off, loads more room. Put masking tape onto the shoe linings to keep grease and stuff off. Remember to take it off though. Should auto adjust but never do so do as in the video and manually wind out the adjust ment first, handbrake and pedal use should then take over the adjusting thereafter. Always helps to slacken the handbrake cable first. SLacken cable, change shoes, adjust them, then adjust the handbrake cable. If you are still trepadacious bring it round my house, I will do it £60 all in.

    • @spongbob18
      @spongbob18 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      been a year or so but do you have any idea how much you wound it out or should i just play till it binds then slacken it a tiny bit ive done the shoes and drums but the auto ajuster not working and the handbrakes pants ive pumped the pedal heard a few clicks but its worse then the worn ones 🤔

    • @bonkeydollocks1879
      @bonkeydollocks1879 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@spongbob18 no probs, the trick is to slacken the cable off first and it's like you said, adjust them until the drum starts to drag then slack off a few turns, then adjust the cable back up to 5 clicks, the auto adjusters should take over from there when you use it on the road, the brake pedal and using the handbrake (especially) work the auto adjusters.
      Two things to be aware, they have a little bent clam shaped metal part that does the adjusting on the adjuster knurled wheel when you apply the handbrake, this can if not careful fall out and render the adjuster useless, check to see if this hasn't been lost by a previous owner, also the thread of the adjuster needs to be really clean and free and lightly greased if it's to work well.
      I found my adjuster heel/clam part missing on one side, £35 for the complete adjuster because you can't get the clam separate so to get me by until a second hand one came up on ebay I adjusted my adjuster correctly and held the adjuster whhel with a small cable tie to prevent it from winding off,just put the cable tie behind the wheel on the thread.
      It sounds like you have a missing clam part

      Where are you based?
      Spent ages following the Haynes manual video on YT. Has issues with the brake shoes (rear passenger) as the top thing started leaking and one side popped off, popped it back on with the spring.
      After replacing the adjuster was done so that the brake drum was freely moving, is that not right? As there was no force / resistance when spinning it.
      Little worried as I could hear air coming out of the rear left when using the handbrake, did a test drive gear 2 max, and the braking distance is bad 7-10M at slow speeds…
      I’m in Oakham, Rutland.
      Not too sure what to do next, I’ll have to strip and see tomorrow.

      It was very difficult to get any sort of shot on camera, essentially you have to patiently turn the adjusted, through one of the holes in the hub till you get it right
