    The chair was the problem here. The woman in pink was making some points, they may have been valid or not, but she should have been allowed at least to say them, and then she should have been told to remain silent while others spoke. People were speaking without being invited to by the chair. It just needed someone to lead the meeting effectively.

      Agree entirely - what sort of election is it where the votes of all those who did not vote are regarded as voting AGAINST the motion - that's a very warped take on English democracy!! At that rate we would be recording all votes of people who did not vote in a General Election as supporting the opposition parties - sheer insanity!

      @@garryspiller2715 RIght, but it's some kind of non-binding referendum, and usually (best practice!) you would have some kind of minimum vote share for that. So it was just very incompetently done overall, but they shouldn't all be resigning.
      As well as butting in all the time, the woman in pink made some very silly points as well - such as the one about some people being only "de facto" (she meant "de jure") elected. That is nothing to do with anything. She is generally very aggressive and I can see why they are all fed up of her.

      @harrparr8988 One point the woman in Pink does make, before she starts channelling Malcolm Tucker, is that the council should resign. And on this showing it’s hard to disagree. The real problem is that people qualify for these roles through enthusiasm, not through competence. Once the enthusiasm has been sapped by infighting, backbiting and rampant egoism, you’re just left with the incompetence. These folk might be great at allocating a budget, but if they are unable to engage in civil discourse they’d be better off spending their evenings in the pub. (Like most of their parishioners!)

    what an utter shambles, the only councillor who seems to have any understanding of standing orders is the lady in pink. The conduct of the Chair is very unbecoming and shrill. This Council needs training.

    • @garryspiller2715

      Yes the Chair is quite appalling. This would be ideal on a management 'leadership' training seminar actually - as an example of how NOT to Chair a meeting. She has absolutely no control over proceedings & committee members seem to incoherently warble away at will - how they produce an agreed set of minutes.... Most of the aggression, disrespect & rudeness seems to come from the lady Chair as well - there's obv some backstory behind all this angst!

      It needs new blood. I'm sure there are parishioners that aren't either a karen or a potato that would serve (on a newly constituted council). And sack the clerk.

    Lady in pink was the only one that looked to make any sense. The rest acted like children. She’s right they should all resign. And start again. A competent and conciliatory chair should be found. If it’s possible! Lookers on see most.

    The lady in pink ("Janet" I think) was correct. The problem with PC meeting is that a lot of people get jealous very quickly if someone is motivated, professional and accurate.

    • @margheritapizza
      @margheritapizza 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      She's generally correct, if a bit rude about it. It's mainly the chair losing control and also acting with far too much personal animosity. Don't know if there's some backstory that might make that more justified than it looks. But she should be letting Sandra get her word in, then asking for other opinions rather than jumping straight into an argument. Sandra seems to be acting out of democratic principles rather than a power grab or anything.

      @@margheritapizza I don't find her rude. Perfunctory and focused. I know nothing about her or her background but I would suggest she is typical of many professional services managers etc. You might argue that such a way has no place on a PC, but equally it could be said a PC is there to transact business only. The Chair and Clerk needs training. There’s no ‘point of order’ called by the Chair and they are clearly not respecting or adhering to the Standing Orders. No clear instructions given to Cllr’s or Public. So sad to see this first level of government in such a mess.

    No introductions, no structure to this meeting, a total shambles. The tone, volume and voice of the woman who slammed her hand down on the table was so grating and childish. The woman in the pink was a bit overbearing and did come across as rude but she was confident about what she was saying about the rules etc. The other 2 previously elected councillors should also know the criteria and rules but said nothing. Do these people receive any training on how to run a meeting at all? Good luck👍 to the good residents of Thornton-le-Dale, looks like you are going to need it!

      Most local elections are decided on voter turnouts of < 35% - should we therefore void any referendum or election based on numbers who voted then if the numbers who bother to vote are low (unless so prescribed, of course)? Otherwise, a majority is a majority, as a quorum is a quorum. Isn't that democracy?

    It seems to me that the chair has a personality problem and is probably a person who has lived in the village all her life and doesn’t like change and it’s either her way or no way. I totally agree that if the village proposed a vote of no confidence then that’s the way forward, new blood in an organisation is sometimes the best thing for everyone. Nevertheless very entertaining and the the chair should be totally ashamed of herself and should resign with immediate effect.

      At the recent local elections where I stood unsuccessfully as a candidate I noticed there were two villages where they had Parish Council Elections where the village members could vote for one candidate or another. In many places most people just stand unopposed.
      I have been to the village of Thornton le Dale a number of times to visit friends and have frequented the local pubs. Perhaps there needs to be a parish Council Election at the next local District Council Elections where the local residents can make a decision. However I note that the village has 2 communities, those inhabitants that were born and live in the village and the new residents usually more affluent who have moved in from else where who have different views on how things should be run. The situation is further complicated by the fact that Thornton le Dale is in the Yorkshire Moors National Park, which also have their own bye laws. For instances all buildings must be made of a certain type of stone, with a certain roof tile and the front doors must be of a certain National Park colour which makes getting planning permission to build a lot more difficult than elsewhere.
