The intricacies and subtleties of bird songs in general is amazing. Then when you realize the variaties of purposes for different calls you see how people can spend a lifetime studying them.
I had to laugh at the Barred Owl because it sounds like a human doing a bad impression of an owl.
I miss the European Starlings. There used to be millions upon millions of them throughout the UK. One place I worked used to be along a an A-road, which teems of Starlings used as its guide to and from their roosting place in the evening. It would take about half an hour for the flock to fly overhead. Sadly, it's been at least 30 years since I last saw a Starling. Love their sparkly plumage.
A real unusual call is the breeding time call of the Varied Thrush.
I was going to vote for the barred owl as being the most bizarre, until I heard the kakapo! ---I have a cassette tape of the various calls the loon makes, and what each call means.---And occasionally I wonder how old a fledgling bird is when it learns the adult songs.
Was that the European or African swallow?
I don't know!
