    Nice to know: if you put a hot shoe cover inside the shoe, the camera shoots at 1/30s but you can choose the aperture manually (simulate flash mode)

      I was wondering this very thing. Your comment is the first instance I've seen documenting this in my research.
      Thanks for confirming my suspicion

    • @husshardan3511
      @husshardan3511 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@TJCampie You don't even need a battery in it to test this. Put something in the hotshoe that pushes in that switch (you can even use your fingernail), adjust the aperture manually, watch it stop down when you push the shutter button. What is interesting is the aperture stops downs mechanically/manually with no need for electronics, but the leaf shutter behind it will not operate unless you have batteries in it. Even though it sounds like it is doing it's thing.

    Somebody may have mentioned this already, but one benefit of the 1535 (and the other similar Agfa models) is that the film goes into a light-tight compartment as it is shot. If you open the camera mid-roll, you won't lose any pictures you've already taken.

    Mate, my granddad gifted me his 1535 two years ago. It was his last film camera before he got a digicam. It's in absolutely mint condition and came in its original box including the Agfa flash for this thing. That's almost exactly the same size as the camera itself. Man, I love this Agfa camera to death! The huge viewfinder is a blessing!

    I remember when shooting with a lightweight compact camera (in my case an Contax T2) you could get a weird kind of motion blur between 1/30 and 1/8sec where it looked like general defocus across the frame - I'd try testing the Agfa on a tripod in dim conditions to see if the lens really is unsharp wide open.

    My first 35mm camera was an Agfa optima flash , I also had another Agfa optima (without the flash). I really liked them and the big viewfinder was great especially as I wear glasses. I still have them somewhere but not used them for a long time. It was this camera that made me like the 40mm focal length .

    If you want a rangefinder automatic camera that has the battery compartment on the outside, you might consider a Minolta Hi-Matic. And these things are built like a tank! When I got mine, the focus didn't turn because of a seriously dented filter ring. So I took a hammer to it and now it works just like new.

    Another really cool and even smaller rangefinder would be the Olympus XA - which is still decently sharp wide open. Aperture priority with a side-attaching flash and a super short focus throw. Turns into a P&S when you set it to hyperfocal + f5.6, it's by far my favorite travel/party camera.

  • @analogtechnik704
    @analogtechnik704 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    great video.
    The Agfa Optima 1035 (same lens, just without a rangefinder, but with a self-timer) was my first analogue camera, which I bought used at the age of 12 from a photo dealer for 10 EUR.
    Now 13 years later I bought the 1535 (I'm just not really good with zone focusing)...
    The 1035 and 1535 have the best lenses in the series (Tessar type with multi-coating), what personally surprises me is the durability of the CDS measuring cells.
    After almost 50 years they are still accurate, so accurate that even slide films are excellently exposed.

    I have the oldest sister of this one, the Agfa 335. It's really cool to shoot for a lot of the same reasons as the 1535, but all too easy to just forget to set the focus range, not to say impossible to adjust fine focus. Amazing for street photography, small, discreet, fits in the pocket, easy to pick brief shots quickly and not draw too much attention.

    Analog Insights [channel] introduced me to the scale-focus Agfa Optima Sensor 1035. It's a keeper. It's the other « red dot ». The viewfinder is huge. Consider the rangefinder Rollei XF35 [also on Analog Insights] with a gnarly shutter sound as well, f/2,3 lens 1/30 to 1/650 with speed/aperture displayed in the view finder, which automagically sets the shutter speed/aperture [same system for flash as the Agfa Optima Sensor]. Second the MR9 adapter. Works in a Leica CL [film].

      Mee tooo. The flash mode is very clever. Love the decent high(ish) 1/650s shutter speed, that you can meter and recompose and that there’s a readout of settings in the viewfinder. And slowest shutter speed of 1/30s is sensible. Try that on an XA. But … I do seem to get a lot of underexposed images (I’m using 1.5v batts and rating 400 speed film at 160 🤷🏼‍♂️)

    You can get replacement alkaline 625 batteries which do have a slightly higher voltage than a mercury cell but at least the same dimensions. By jamming an extra (fourth) battery in the compartment you give the camera an additional two volts. It's great if it exposes correctly but I would be a bit worried if it's being slowly toasted to death.

      can you send a link to those batteries the one i know under 625 are propably to big for this camera

      @@erkn99 I don't have this camera, I assumed that all 625 batteries are the same size. I used Varta V625U to replace the old PX625 mercury batteries in an Agfamatic pocket and they were identical (in size) to the old ones.

      @@robine5280 since he used sr44/lr44 batteries as replacement i think the 625 ones are to big to fit but thats what she Said anyway

      @@erkn99 I suggest that's what he had on hand because he stated that he put four sr44 instead of three px625 in.

      "slowly toasted to death" - Yes, Jason is definitely rolling the dice (using the WRONG batteries). 3 button cell 625A (still too much voltage) or 3 Silver Oxide formula 357 batteries using the MR9 adapters (perfect voltage).

    Finally! Someone made a video about my mom’s vintage camera 😢 Can you please try next the Canon Elan? You know, the one that works with a barcode scanner?

    I think there is another version of these where the ISO goes up to 1000 helps with the low light

    I really liked my 1035 until the reverse gear thingy broke. Which, I'm told, will eventually happen to all of these. The lens on my 1035 is sharp wide open though. I think there's some shutter shakers going on with yours, or possibly a misaligned rangefinder?

      I think you're right. Long exposure time leads to camera shake.
