      Hey, the "it doesn't even work with a dish this big when it's raining" is the DirectTV geosynchronous orbit at 36,000km away... not a Starlink at 400km. My Starlink works fine while it's raining. There is a HUGE reduction in signal strength going all the way to geosynchronous, but not to 400km (or less). Are you using Starlink and speaking from experience? Or are you using old satellite concepts?
      Another thing to consider is that laser light in the vacuum of space travels 30% faster than through glass (fiber). Hence why wall street and the military is interested in Starlink to get faster connectivity for real time operations.

    As a "techie" I recognized the combination of cell phones to orbital communication satellites for the average consumer back in the early 70's.
    I patiently watched them merge over time by watching each progress through the noise being generated by wired communication services. Their future was going to look bleak trying to hold onto consumers. Space X broke the barrier that wired comm.were holding onto. Soon, Cellsat coverage will truly be worldwide.

  • @crackerpack4186

    This is going to be great actually. There’s so much to benefit from this that people don’t realize. Being able to use data anywhere on the planet would allow other industries to innovate and help as well. For example the medical industry could utilize this in areas where communication is limited and where disease outbreaks are common which may limit the amount of personnel able to be there. Space X is doing great and honestly solving a lot of problems they didn’t think that they would.

      Your last statement "solving a lot of problems they didn't think they would' understates the minds working for SpaceX. Those modems didn't just grow on/in the satellites. They knew exactly what they planned to do and followed through with their plan. Until they get complete coverage of the planet, they chose not to do coverage 'on the seas'.

    FYI: According to the United States Coast Guard, "Coastal Waters" include the territorial waters of the United States. The "territorial waters" extend 12 nautical miles seaward from any state owned body of land, which includes state islands.
    Therefore, "direct to cell" should work up to 12 nautical miles (13.8 regular miles) seaward of the United States coastline.

    Incredible how far radio technology has come. We had sat phones for years but now using an smartphones which clearly wasn’t designed to connect to a satellite is just amazing. I’m a big tech nerd especially when it comes to RF Technology so I’m super curious how this works under the hood, not just that it’s using LTE, I mean the really deep and dark stuff like antennas, frequency shift etc.

    • @FilthyMoss
      @FilthyMoss ปีที่แล้ว

      It has been, signals with 20mw enough amplitude to go 100s of miles if picked up exact frequency on the responder frequency. think about messages we sent out in space 75yrs ago with a potato was 20w over 100k miles

    • @maxmustermann9858
      @maxmustermann9858 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FilthyMoss Yeah at the end the only thing that matters is signal to noise ratio, but It’s hard to understand for me because you need a high gain antanna. LTE antennas in current phones are just not designed to have such high gain also how the phone is handling the Doppler effect with their respective frequency shift?
      RF technology especially in the context of satellites is an extremely interesting and deep topic.

Much of that is still in the realm of classified data. If you want to read what was put out 35 years ago, read: Deep Black: Space Espionage and National Security. You can bet that things have evolved more since then. But to know them, you would need a high level security clearance.

    eNodeB is just what most people are actually referring to when they say 'Cell tower'. Whenever you are connected to 4G you are using an eNodeB somewhere nearby. It is just the technical term for a cellular base station inn 4G / LTE. The eNodeB in the Starlink satellite will just be electronics that are functionally equivalent to the equipment in the 'cell towers' that you use every day.

    My big question has been with satellite internet: What happens in a storm or any cloud cover. Back in the day when I lived in Florida and we had satellite TV, we were totally disconnected during any cloud cover.

    It would be worth checking on coastal waters. It may be that there is a provision for some distance out offshore, but not for crossing oceans. Also LTE is not 5G, so at least at first, data will likely not be streaming 4k videos.

    • @jcristina
      @jcristina  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My T-Mobile LTE gets 150 to 190Mbps which allow for many 4K stream simultaneously.

      @@jcristina If you mean a phone that connects directly to the Star Link satellites, without the dish nearby then yes that would be excellent. In other words a satellite phone,comparable to

    Yeah that's all fine and dandy but I wish they would work on having more PoP's installed so when we do a search the location is closer to home and not a whole State away, and maybe a way where we can use our routers and eliminate the Starlink router so we don't have that double NAT issue. Just fix what we already have and make it better is all I'm saying.

    ❤ great information! Unfortunately the Australian Starlink website still doesn’t have the LTE info up.
    It is interesting that Starlink has partnered with Optus (Australia’s arguably third largest cell phone network) Optus has kept going by setting up towers where Telstra and Vodafone have not. Now all Australian nomads and those businesses that rely on connectivity will now consider Optus as a better option.

    J - watched you post today and can't wait for dtc, but I want to use it inside. If you think about it, I can get info inside my house through their satellite dish and router. So, why can't they change it from a one way communication to a two way communication? Reinvision the home router as a collector and sender to the satellite dish that then enables customers to be able to use their dtc features inside their buildings? I don't know the technical names for this process, but it makes sense to me. It is just thinking outside the box, err building.

    • @jcristina
      @jcristina  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      With Starlink it a BIG antenna outside. With DTC it’s a small one which could be inside a building making it harder.
