    Just when think you have seen every possible feature of a PC case, a vendor comes along and adds a whole new take on what a high-end chassis should include. Well, that’s precisely what happened today because be quiet! has updated its Dark Base 900 series with this new Dark Base PRO 901 which includes Qi wireless fast charging, touch-sensitive controls for fan speed and ARGB lighting as well as a dual-purpose attachment that reduces GPU sag and conceals cables. So could this be the most technologically advanced PC we have ever seen? Let's find out.

    • @michalwalks
      @michalwalks 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @@JRobin. Rather frustratingly, it measures as 40.5cm... Which I found out after purchasing an extra Silent Wings 4 Fan and realising that there is no way to install a third fan if you have the 5.25" bay filled... Then when I went to check other videos and promo pictures I realised that wasn't just me, that's how it is... Yet if they moved the bay slightly down it would have made it possible to install a radiator or extra 140mm fan... So, your radiator will not mount in the front unless you leave the 5.25

    BQ really needs to rethink their under-shroud hdd mounts. This one forces you to go without an optical drive if you use them, though there is plenty of room for a different design. On my 500dx, the hdd mount completely blocks airflow from the bottom front fan. I removed it and used a bracket velcroed to the bottom of the case. This let the bottom front fan feed air to a shroud-mounted fan under the gpu.

    @QuentinStephens ปีที่แล้ว

    Delightful build as usual. Great and clear descriptions, too. When I first saw the case, I thought, "I bet that has 200mm fans." How wrong I was.
    You noted that the case has 8 expansion slots rather than the usual 7; I wonder how this case would fare with a workstation build (Xeon / Threadripper Pro) and four dual-slot GPUs or AI cards? Indeed, I wonder if that extra depth could be used to fit blowers to such cards?
    Wireless phone charging seems to me like a gimmick, but then I have the case of this PC in a cupboard, so I'm not in the target market.
    You noted the fan hubs built into the fan mounting frames: with fans now themselves clipping together and daisychaining this seems a little too late, and you mentioned that the front frame no longer mated after you used the other holes, so that's pretty useless.
    I do have two questions:
    First, how does the GPU support bracket affect GPU cooling? It looks like it would cover part of the rear through fan or cooling fins or both on certain cards.
    Second, I think you did miss one key question: £380 is a lot of money for a case so how does it compare to competitors like (for example) the Fractal North and Fractal Torrent, or indeed the Fractal Define XL (if you want lots of HDDs or GPUs). And, moving upwards, how about the £450 HAF700 case you reviewed a while back? More simply, why should I spend all that money? Is it really £275 better than a £105 case like the Endorfy or Montech you reviewed recently?
    Keep up the good work.

    • @KitGuruJames
      @KitGuruJames ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you should be able to position the GPU support in a way that it covers cables and doesn't interfere with airflow of through fans with most graphics cards.
      The wireless charging is a great feature for someone like me who is at the PC for long periods, forgets to charge my phone overnight and usually needs a phone charge during the day, but often doesn't have a USB cable handy.
      £320 is a lot of money for a case for sure. In terms of cooling a basic gaming PC then this probably isn't much more useful than a £100 Endorfy or Montech case.
      However if you find the features useful, need tonnes of storage space and/or want to create a big custom cooled build with multiple large radiators then this is great. The flexibility you get with this isn't available in most cheaper case too. But it all depends on what you need from a case I guess.
      It's difficult to compare it with any of the other cases you mentioned, the Cooler Master HAF 700 is similar in size but it's designed to appeal to a different taste. This is more for the subtle professional user that needs a high end system. HAF 700 is more of a big showcase type case for showing off your RGBness 😊.
      Personally I would choose the Dark Base Pro 901 as it has more useful features for me. My main rig has custom cooling, 4 x 2.5inch SSDs and two 3.5" HDDs so this would work well for me.

    Touch controls just aren't something I'd want in a case. Having to bend down or the side to see what you're pressing is bad and the lack of tactile feedback doesn't help. If the Pro 901 had physical buttons you could adjust the fan speed by touch, ironically enough. Plus, I'd expect that with touch controls there's greater chance of accidentally pressing a button when trying to unplug/plug in something to the front ports. So it's pointless complexity and cost for me.

    • @iaadsi
      @iaadsi 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Touch controls are a great deal *cheaper*. On the 901 it's just a PCB with traces that are being sampled by the front panel's controller (STM32F401 in this case), with a plastic cover laid on top. You touch an icon on the plastic, this de-tunes the bit of copper behind it, and the controller fires off an event. This is much cheaper than having to machine and align cut-outs for buttons, button caps, switches... the front panel can be off by several millimeters and nobody would notice. With buttons, even a fraction of a mm makes for an uneven gap.
      The user experience is as you describe, 100% downgrade. I accidentally set my fans to full blast when unplugging a USB drive, and at the same time sometimes it refuses to register a touch when I want to.

      Top (mm) 120 / 240 / 360
      Front (mm) 120 / 140 / 240 / 280 / 360 / 420
      Side (mm) 120 / 240 / 360
      Now, maybe it is an error on their part... My Silent Base 802 also looks like it should take the 280mm at the top, but the VRM heatsink and the radiator intersect for a few millimeters. If only Be Quiet made the mounting holes 2-3mm to the left...

      @@madant7777yes maybe be quiet omits the 280 as it can't guarantee every 280 will fit. But looking at the clearance around the 360 AIO I fitted in the test system a 280 of the same thickness should fit without too much hassle.

    I see that the "anti-sag bracket" is a worthless PoS, this is clearly demonstrated repeatedly during the build @24:00 where it is very clear that the "support" below the "support bracket" is the weak link, and it clearly sags as any force is added to it.!!! In any instance, as has been shown before, if the graphics card backplate is securely connected to the I/O plate then there is almost no sag anyway, thus totally negating the point of these "GPU supports", plus it has to be noted that at this time in the video, the GPU water-cooling cables are twisted, likely wont make any measurable difference, just worth noting... sometimes it's the small things..

    1. Too expensive
    2. Glass side panel... not hinged.
    3. The GPU anti sag bracket to hide the GPU cables is nice, but still covers a chunk of the GPU.
    A nice case, of course it's Be Quiet! But at that price there are a lot of things that I would rather have.

    So it has got wireless charging. And still no chiller for a can of beer? Better watch YT on your fridge screen then.
    Case makers are going crazy trying to sell you more. More of the case, more of the fans, more of random extensions.
    Because how does this go? Didn't your phone have a (preferred type of) charger already? Would you really get the case to gain access to wireless charging for the first time?

    To me this case is nothing special and even surprising downgrade in pc case design compared to their own 802 - side panels on thumbscrews vs tool-less; more complicated swapping mesh/silence panels or needing to remove front panel to access bottom filter (!). Besides this case is disproportionaly huge compared to it's dissapointing capacity (radiators; drives). For such money man should expect everything being world best. Let's compare 901 to Fractals Define 7/Meshify 2 or to be more fair in terms of size and price, to their XL variants. They massacrate 901 in every regard when costing noticeably less and bq! offering can only defend itself with charger and inverted layout. There're also three better Silent Wings 4, but you could equipp Fracals with them for the price difference. This is what 901 really is - just inverted layout and charger for steep price.

    Since it has a painted chassis, the RF Ground is destroyed!
    Without a proper RF Ground return to the PS, any system using this case will leak RF and suffer from power sag.
    Real PC cases use bare metal chassis!
    Have a look at any system that complies to standards like Lenovo Think Station or even Dell and you will see bare metal chassis for proper grounding.
    Total Junk!!!!!!!!!!!!
