Upholstery is tricky. It was once considered a King's art, much like paintings and sculpture. 20+ yrs experience. Not criticism. Tips. When you covered the trip with the fiber padding, knock those corners of the board down, so they don't end up tearing the fabric with wear and tear. Second, when you start applying the fabric, pull one side right enough to hold it. On the opposite side, push the board until the fabric is tight,, THEN tack it down. On the corners, pull up and over the corner, first. This will create pleats on each side and that food will be far less noticeable. You did well in cutting the foam larger than the board,, bit it needs to large enough that you can tack down through the foam into board, then you roll the top side down, either even with the side of the board or for a VERY SMOOTH look, to the opposite side of the board. Adding the batting to the top is a great move. Obviously, the upholstery could be better and will with experience, but the look is absolutely fantastic! New sub!!! Love the Christmas tree idea!!!!!! Keto up the good work!!!!!!
Good looking stool, Matt. I'm planning to make a few for my children. I'm hoping that I can find some wild, insane fabric for the top. I can't resist giving them a bad time! Thanks for this video and please, stay safe.
Crazy how well that foam cut on the bandsaw (I too have used a kitchen knife in the past) I will keep that in mind for the next time! Thanks for sharing!
Gorgeous build! I just had a low staked stool with oak and ask, and it's not particularly comfortable without any padding on it, so I may have a look into this design for the next one.
Lovely stool! Your upholstery skills are better than mine. By the way, I love the low tech "SketchUp". Nice to know that one doesn't need fancy computer programs to devise a project.
This turned out very well. I like your design and the choice of wood. That lovely piece of oak was a great find. Thanks for sharing your build with us. Have a great week and best wishes.
Lovely little stool Matt. Very well made too. Better keep the leg jig handy as this could be this years “must have” Christmas present for mums, dads and grandparents! 😁👍
Definitely sell some of these and for Oak furniture land prices hopefully ☺️ You will be a dab hand at upholstery before you know it too. Keep the vids coming they are great mate. 👍
I just love it and for a first upholstery job it came out very very nice and i dont think you know little about woodworking i remind you , you built shepherds hut which is my favorite !!!! As always great job , i really enjoy the video !!!!1
Lovely work again Matt, just one pointer with the upholstery if you glue the foam to the backing board it helps to stop it from moving about, lovely piece of oak though its a fantastic wood, one of my favourites, well done👍
@@Badgerworkshop Just a spray from a can would do or contact adhesive www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=spray+glue+for+foam&crid=DQR5HX49G8U6&sprefix=spray+glue%2Caps%2C144&ref=nb_sb_ss_i_7_10
Badger Workshop toolstation spray contact adhesive is cheap enough and works well, my daughter (the one that lasered your drinks coaster) and I stripped and reupholstered the four kitchen chairs and a slightly tricker round stool for the workshop this summer (quality time 😀)... you did a great job! The tip we followed was to put a bit of tension on the fabric as you go North - South then East-West in the centre of the base, then to work out from each centre staple again with a bit of tension, so as the foam becomes less springy you've not got flappy bits of fabric....but I too am not an expert 😉
As always very nicely done Matt 😁👍. Love the taper jig, will have to use that idea. Top quality and very comfy looking results. And I'm sure Andy Mac will be well chuffed with the use of one of his finest measures 😁. Keep it up Matt, always enjoy your projects. 😁👍.
Nice little stool. Love the oak and don't worry about your upholstery skills - worked just fine, oh and erm... you shouldn't worry about your present wrapping skills either, i don't mind my present(s) from you in the Festool boxes they came in, just incase you were wondering what to get me from xmas. Here to help. 🌲🦊🌲
That disclaimer instantly made me think of Henry's Cat. "He knows everything about nothing, and not too much about that!" 😂 I shall add this to the long list of things I say I'll make but never get round to making!
Great idea and very good wooden looking stool 👍🏽thanks for sharing your beautiful footstool 👏🏽
Enjoyed this enormously. You know approx 300% more about upholstery than me!.
Thank you very much

Good looking stool, Matt. I'm planning to make a few for my children. I'm hoping that I can find some wild, insane fabric for the top. I can't resist giving them a bad time! Thanks for this video and please, stay safe.

If you put the tapers on the outside it could give a slimmer look (shaker-style) perhaps an idea for a small side table 😊
good idea
Nice stool, There is nothing wrong with your upholstery skills and the more you practice the better you get.
Thank you John

Lovely! Do you take orders?
That disclaimer instantly made me think of Henry's Cat. "He knows everything about nothing, and not too much about that!" 😂
I shall add this to the long list of things I say I'll make but never get round to making!

I think you need more lights in your workshop Matt? Or is that artistic lighting for filming? Is your other name Little Jack-Horner?
Trying to be artistic
That should work just fine Matt---

Now you just have to make time to use it lol!
Yes that is the hard bit
Lovely job, but why have you still got your boots on.
Thank you. I need to kick them off
When you were gluing up and it was on its side it occurred to me that it could also serve as a top hat rack; you are in England, right? Peace.
I do need a place for my hat
I thought you didn't know about upholstery !
I dont but i try
I hope you don't wrap presents with a staple gun! 😂
